Hi folks,

I've been a regular lurker here for a few months. I discovered this lifestyle last summer when I met a raw foodist at Valley View hot springs. He shared this amazing chocolate dessert with us, and I couldn't believe that it was good for you. :) It took me awhile to warm up to the idea, though. In January I began researching the raw food lifestyle, reading everything I can about it.

I'm 35 and I've been a vegetarian for 17 of those years. I'm healthy enough, but lately I've noticed that I've just started getting some aches and pains. I have a few pounds to lose and I'm generally tired. So, here I go!

I've been collecting recipes off this board for awhile and I have two raw food recipe books that I don't ever use. In one of the books everything I've made from it has time consuming, expensive and tasted naaasty. In the other, most of the book is salad, very simple foods and pates. So I ordered "The Book" and I'm ready to commit to this. I've read Green For Life, and have the green smoothie thing down. I love them, and I think drinking them every day has been a good way to transition to where I am now.

I told my husband that I'm taking the 30-day challenge starting May 1st. His response was, "Oh, OK." You know, the same response I would have gotten if I'd said I fell in love with a lemur and was running away with the circus. ;) But the funny thing is that the stuff I've made so far he's loved, AND he likes that it's raw! His thing (mine too) is bread. We <3 bread. While I was initially met with some resistance, I know he'll come around. And eat more than his share of my hard-earned recipes.

The hardest part for me will be figuring out what foods will satisfy my cravings for savory foods. It seems that there are sweet treats a-plenty in the raw world. But really, there is only so many salads I can eat in a day. :o It just seems like the really good dinner recipes take days to make or are crazy expensive.

Another hard part will be dealing with how this change will conflict with my social life. A typical night with friends usually involves a bottle of wine or beer, and/or going out to see shows. I don't think that drinking alcohol the way I have been would ever fit into the raw lifestyle. However, we are all very active in Colorado, so I think I will just replace it with healthier activities (hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, etc.)

Well that's enough about me! :) I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you lovely people.

Welcome Jeannine,
I too have been a lurker for awhile and just became active on the site a week or two ago. I figured that I'm never going to make my "raw" dreams come true unless I dive in with everyone else and start taking action. My best to you on your journey and have fun coming up with some favorite recipes. Enjoy!

Hi Jeannine,
Where in Denver? Near where? Just at Whole Foods today, Hampden.

Shop Sunflower Market? I go down there often off Colorado Blvd.

Aloha and Welcome!! I too was a lurker (from January until April!) Then I took the 30 day challenge. I'm on day 23 and I'm feeling better than I ever have before!
Since you've alreaday discovered the recipe section - and you love bread -- the Onion bread recipe sounds fantastic - I'm going to try that this week and make a sandwhich with the 'egg-less' deviled egg recipe that I got from the recipe section also! (and I just tried the 'Spicy Taco' recipe -- OMG!! :D It was wonderful!!)
Many blessings on your journey!

Thank you everyone for your warm welcome! :D

Carol, I live in Park Hill (by the museum and zoo). Nice to know there are other raw foodists in our city! I was thinking that, at some point, it would be great to have a raw potluck in the park if I can find enough people.

LifeAGift, I feel very blessed to live here. I grew up in upstate New York, and consider Denver my true home. :)

Starfire, thank you for your tip on the Onion Bread. I tried to make it awhile ago, and the onion taste was too strong, and all that flax kinda creeped me out (my husband snarfed it, though hehe). I'm open to trying it again, although I may grind half of the flax. It may just be an acquired taste and I may love it a few months from now! I'm sprouting some seeds for "Italian Bread", http://www.rawfoods.com/recipes/italianbread.html. I know it won't be what I'm used to, I just need some kind of substitute. I recognize that this is a process that will take some time to settle into. I'm glad you liked the spicy taco recipe! I've got my flax seeds starting to sprout for Raw Cutter's corn tortillas, and hope to make that tomorrow.

Welcome Jeannine,
Socializing may be challenging. You’ll just have to convert your social crowd into raw fooders! I read somewhere about someone having a fancy cocktail type party but instead of a liquor bar they had a juice bar with a paid bartender and all. They had all kinds of fresh fruits and veggies that you could have made into attractive juices and smoothie type drinks and then stand around chatting and drinking.

Welcome! Green smoothies are the way to go! A whole lotta food in a quick amount of time and already broken down so your body can assimilate it quicker. Check out Victoria Boutenko's book, "Green for Life" - all about GS's and how very good they are for you.
Also - get Alissa's book and DVD if you don't have both of them. SOOOOO worth it.
