Hi folks,
I've been a regular lurker here for a few months. I discovered this lifestyle last summer when I met a raw foodist at Valley View hot springs. He shared this amazing chocolate dessert with us, and I couldn't believe that it was good for you. :) It took me awhile to warm up to the idea, though. In January I began researching the raw food lifestyle, reading everything I can about it.
I'm 35 and I've been a vegetarian for 17 of those years. I'm healthy enough, but lately I've noticed that I've just started getting some aches and pains. I have a few pounds to lose and I'm generally tired. So, here I go!
I've been collecting recipes off this board for awhile and I have two raw food recipe books that I don't ever use. In one of the books everything I've made from it has time consuming, expensive and tasted naaasty. In the other, most of the book is salad, very simple foods and pates. So I ordered "The Book" and I'm ready to commit to this. I've read Green For Life, and have the green smoothie thing down. I love them, and I think drinking them every day has been a good way to transition to where I am now.
I told my husband that I'm taking the 30-day challenge starting May 1st. His response was, "Oh, OK." You know, the same response I would have gotten if I'd said I fell in love with a lemur and was running away with the circus. ;) But the funny thing is that the stuff I've made so far he's loved, AND he likes that it's raw! His thing (mine too) is bread. We <3 bread. While I was initially met with some resistance, I know he'll come around. And eat more than his share of my hard-earned recipes.
The hardest part for me will be figuring out what foods will satisfy my cravings for savory foods. It seems that there are sweet treats a-plenty in the raw world. But really, there is only so many salads I can eat in a day. :o It just seems like the really good dinner recipes take days to make or are crazy expensive.
Another hard part will be dealing with how this change will conflict with my social life. A typical night with friends usually involves a bottle of wine or beer, and/or going out to see shows. I don't think that drinking alcohol the way I have been would ever fit into the raw lifestyle. However, we are all very active in Colorado, so I think I will just replace it with healthier activities (hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, etc.)
Well that's enough about me! :) I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you lovely people.
