Okay - so i was reading in this one raw book that if you do not soak your raw nuts that you are not able to digest them, and you are therefore going to benefit more (nutrient speaking) to eat a baked potato - or other steamed veggies.

thoughts?

Why not just soak the almonds?

Ha Ha. How can you compare nuts to potatoes? Isn't that like apples to oranges?

Just teasin' you. . . . . kinda.

What about ground almonds? Why wouldn't we be able to digest that?

I wasn't trying to decide whether or not to eat them, i wanted to know if anyone had heard that before.

I don't have a dehydrator so I don't soak my almonds. I eat a couple of handfuls a day. I just don't worry about it. :p

What does not having a dehydrator have to do with soaking almonds? I am soooo confused!

I guess people don't like eating them once they have softened a little from the soaking.

wouldn't dehydrating them sort of make the crunchy again?

Yeah, but so will drying in the sun or drying on a paper towel... just allowing them to dry...

I've never soaked my almonds, because I was told (when following recipes) do not soak them unless it instructs you to and everything I have made just says almonds, not soaked almonds. So, since I haven't done it for recipes, I don't soak them for snacking either.

I do not like to eat almonds plain after soaking. I tried them and did not like them mushy. So you say they dry out again if I leave them set on a paper towel on the counter? Do they still have some crunch? I wonder if I can soak them and season them then let them dry? I am still new at this raw stuff.

you really want to make sure you are soaking your nuts. They have enzyme inhibitors that are taken care of during the soaking/sprouting process. Without this process, they are *extremely* difficult - if not impossible - to digest.

I was soaking... and started feeling really weak and deficient. We couldn't figure out why! I was eating a balance of everything.... then we found out about the nut thing - so i remedied that, and began feeling much better!!:D

OK. Thank you for sharing that last bit. I did not want to get involved with soaking nuts or making the nut mylks and have not so far. Actually I have not been interested in nuts at all. . . but I will try to keep this in mind for when I am.

I don't own a dehydrator and I love the taste of soaked almonds!

I soak them for a minimum of two days before eating, and I add a bit of vitamin C powder to the soak water to counter the aflatoxin that is known to grow on soaked nuts. I rinse them before eating, too.

Well, don't be confused. You know what the right answer is or you wouldn't be so wary of this thing you read. I bet the first thing you thought when you read that was "that doesn't seem right". Generally, the first reaction is the correct one.

I don't generally soak my nuts and I'm glowing with health and I know that I'm digesting them, so I would not pay attention to those things you read. Then again, I am not infinite in my knowlege, so I'm going ny what I've experienced and what seems sensible to me. As long as your nuts are raw, fresh and not dehydrated you are eating them in the way they grew into this Earth so why change such a natural thing? Soeaking does "liven" them up because that is what water does, in general. But unsoaked raw nuts are of course better for you than heated vegetables. Once something is heated, it loses nutritive worth and is automatically compromised, that is the bottom line.

Peace!
