I used to volunteer at Baptiste's studio in Boston, where we did 90 minutes in a 95-degree room. And I did Bikram a lot, too. I'm looking to get back into that.
Hot yoga. Well, I love it. But I'll give you a few hints. Bring a towel, a big bottle of water, and a good mat. And be prepared not only to sweat, but to swoon.
It will take 3-5 sessions, possibly, for you to stop feeling dizzy, nauseous or both. Or, you may take to it more quickly. Just know that you are pushing toxins out of your body quickly and intensely, like a dishrag being wrung out. So eat well, drink plenty of water before and after, and for the rest of the day. I think you'll become hooked. :)

Im very excited to begin. The yoga teacher is a chiropractor and I have talked to him on the phone and he sounds very neat. Can't wait!

I'm totally addicted to bikram. I hated it the 1st time but tried it again a couple years later and loved it. It healed my lower back pain. And I sometimes feel high afterwards. I agree...it will take a few classes to adjust to the heat, but then you won't notice it. I even went on a bikram retreat in January. Have fun!

yeah we went and im hooked. The hot yoga class i go to is not as hard core as bikram in that my guy only heats the room to 90 vs 105 but still very great experience. My husband and I bought a 3 month pass.

Ooooh, that's so cool!!!! I just love Baron! I've never taken a Live Class with him (nor have met him), but I've been doing his videos for many (maybe 7 or 8?) years. He's one of my very favorites!

LovingLife,
I actually took classes with Rolfe Gates at that studio. Rolfe wrote an incredible book called Meditations on the Mat. He was a really inspirational teacher. Quite frankly, I wasn't impressed with Baron, as he got on a bit of a celebrity high and let it affect him in a lot of negative ways, IMO. He fired the entire Boston staff right before I left Boston, including Rolfe. I like his theory, but I think his practice needs a little bit of taking its own advice. :)

I'm really a big fan of Angela Farmer. If you ever have a chance to take a class with her, watch her video, anything, do. She's incredible at teaching people how to do yoga intuitively (so similar to intuitive eating), not focusing on the perfection of the pose.

I've heard of Angela Farmer, but haven't seen her video. I'll have to now.
That's too bad about Baron, and especially Rolf! I have that book and LOVE IT! (It's in my bathroom, so I don't get too busy to remember to read from it ;) ). I've noticed that Rolf is in several of Baron's videos and that Baron wrote a recommendation for Rolf's book. That's terrible that Baron's fame got to him and ruined that relationship.
Off to read the Boston Mag. article -- thanks.

Shalom,
Talk to a practitioner and your doc. I don't know enough about pregnancy and yoga to say yay or nay. The heat can be quite intense, but it's best to ask a professional doc.

Bikram yoga can be done safely while pregnant, but only if you were doing it regularly before you got pregnant and are already used to the heat. Bikram's wife, Rajashree, has a video out on how to modify the bikram positions to do while pregnant...like you can't lay on your back past your 4th or 5th month so you lay on your side and obviously you can't lie on your tummy either so other poses are modified. I think opinions are mixxed as to whether it is ok or not. While I was on my yoga retreat a mommy to be came along too...she was 4 months along and did class every day doing the modified poses.
If you haven't done hot yoga before, I'd find a normal studio that offers prenatal yoga or order a video.:)

Are there any certain foods you shouldnt eat before hot yoga, specifically?

I would avoid eating *any* food for about 1 1/2-2 1/2 hours before hot yoga, Rhianon. Any yoga, actually, but hot yoga is such an intense detoxing process, it's normal to feel nauseous sometimes, and having a full belly wouldn't go well with that. :) Plus, doing yoga on an empty stomach lets your body benefit fully from the poses--the wringing out of organs, so to speak.

What exactly is 'hot'yoga?

I found a place yesterday that's a town or two over that has it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D :D I'm so happy! Between that and TKD, I should be doing GREAT as far as exercising goes! I'm just so tickled! You should've seen me, I screamed when I found the place (much to my son's dismay)! I have a really hard time with curbing my enthusiasm. As in I can't! LOL! But I'm so tickled I found it and can't wait to start!

I've found that I really prefer all my yoga done in a hot room. Yin, vinyasa, bikram, forrest, etc. Over the last year I've completely fallen in love with Forrest yoga. The poses are held way longer than Baptiste style and there's a lot of dedicated shoulder and core work, and I find it incredibly mentally challenging in a way that Vinyasa often isn't for me. So cool how we all find the type that's right for us.
The two times I've done weekends taught by Ana Forrest and her partner, the studios were very very hot. The two studios in Boston where I study Forrest yoga keep their temps at around 85-87degrees, I think, and that feels really perfect for me.
Funny, when I first started, I couldn't stand to exercise and sweat without AC and a fan blowing on me. Now I feel so icky and cold and tight if I try to do yoga in a cooler room.
My friend recently opened up a studio in Jamaica Plain. It's all Forrest, and I have been improving so rapidly now that I have extra incentive to go. I had such a yoga-phobia once upon a time, but now I feel like it's something I'll never ever give up.
(I even plan on doing the Forrest teacher training next year! Yay!!!)
I flew out to Austin, Texas to do some work with my boss for a few days... The first day, I worked for about an hour, and the whole time he kept reminding me of the 4:30 yoga class we had to go to...
For an hour and a half, it was SO hot!!! I have never sweated so much in my life. I actually could have wrung out my shirt and shorts at the end. I did not bring the towel in with me, thought it was because we were going swimming after... I could not do a lot of the poses because there was so much sweat on the mat that I felt like I was at a slip n' slide!
The last 30 minutes of the class, the guy next to me was burping over and over like he was going to vomit all over me. I kept having to go to child's pose because I came thisclose to blacking out.
BUT I loved it. Afterward, I felt so strong and peaceful. If I lived there, I would have gotten a three-month pass that day. I am going to look for it in my neck of the woods.
