View Full Version : Sleep
I started Raw about 5 days ago (...again but 100% this time) and have hardly slept. I want to say it's a problem, but I really don't feel so bad. My mind is trying to tell me I have a problem, but I think it is because I have energy now. So I just don't know. I layed in bed all night last night and just tossed and turned, same pretty much all week.
I was wondering, do others have same issue. Sleeping very little on raw? I am not sure what to make of it.
Could it be that cooked and processed food (which is mostly what I ate) is that hard on a body that it causes you to need 8 hours of sleep, and because of the SAD we have grown to expect that 8 hours hours is the norm? I feel fine and slept maybe 1 hour last night. hmmmm....
I find that on raw food i don't require more than 6 hrs of sleep a night. I wake up refreshed each morning.
Do u exercise much? This helps me to have a more quality sleep.;)

Love the name.:D ;) :p I have been raw now for just about 4 months and I am still struggling with energy but I am waaaaaaaaaaay better off than before= I could have slept all day. My problem was getting GOOD sleep, I took melatonin for the first month just to start a proper sleep pattern, Hylands calms' also work well. If thats what you want ?? Otherwise YOGA and lotsa hobbies cuz your life has just begun:)

I think you're right! To digest processed food demands a lot of energy from your body! So I think people who are longtime raw just need less sleep..
But when you just begun I think its something else... while detoxing some people feel very tired, other cant sleep(I have right now the same problem as you have)
WHile going raw some (detox)things could influence your sleep:
(temporary)changed heartrate
thought going arround in your head(can be very weird)
stress
starvation (if you go to bed hungry, you will sleep worse!)
The need to go to the toilet!
Aching head
Aching muscles
tbc...
You might not really be aware of it, when those sympthomes arent very strong... but those things can keep you from sleep... If you're fresh the next day anyway I wouldnt worry to much! Your body knows what it does :)

Opinion:
-If you change to all-raw very abruptly....or with little transition.....then there are often a LOT of toxins/excito-toxins being dumped back into your bloodstream as you heal. Being 'antsy' or not being able to sleep fitfully is not a surprise to me at all! LOL.
-If you are experiencing uncomfortable detox symptoms that are overly impairing you.....then you need to be honest with yourself and go back to a level of raw food eating that you are VERY comfortable with.......and can detox with....and stretch from there.

I don't sleep as much as I used to. I can stay up really late, go to sleep, and wake up completely refreshed.
At one point, I was detoxing so much that I'd sleep all day. That is no longer a problem:D.

I agree that eating SAD/CRAP food, one's body is so busy trying to heal and that definitely keeps us awake.
Me, since going raw? I do require less sleep, and feel SO energetic all the time! It's cool! Enjoy it!

me too me too:D
It's just strange having so much energy. I did not go raw abruptly. I have been lurking aroud this board for a couple years. I did go 100% somewhat abruptly. I just did not think the change would be so dramatic I guess...to my energy level that is.

Oh yeah! It happens quick. The NEXT day I felt different after going 100% raw. THE NEXT DAY!!!
Our bodies are amazing machines. They heal quickly. They forgive quickly.

Hi Russ,
I’ve been 100% raw for a little over 6 weeks. I’m only sleeping about 6 hours per night, but this past week I’ve felt like I’m sleeping soundly again, where in recent weeks it felt like I was tossing and turning all night. So I think I’m starting to get adjusted to the raw foods, less dense foods, and lower calories. I do think that SAD food is like a sedative for me.
I’m not energetic but I think it’s because my calories are so low to facilitate rapid weight loss.

I noticed that one poster wrote that going to bed hungry can make one sleepless. Also eating to close to bed time in my observation can make one sleepless as the food can act as a stimulant. Now I am wondering if there are some foods OK to eat close to bedtime and others not. Do we need a whole new thread for this? Like foods that help you sleep or something?

In order to feel better than "not so bad," I avoid certain foods in late afternoon and evening, such as any coconut product -- I found this out the hard way, and then read about it later. Spirulina gives me incredible energy also, so I avoid that one also in the evening. The 2 nights I was awake almost the entire night with coconut oil, I felt remarkably okay the next day also. :) Not at all when I was on SAD and lost a night's sleep!
Exercise -- even 15 minutes of a real workout helps me sleep very soundly.
You'll figure it out so that you can feel absolutely fantastic. Took me a while, but I've got it now.

if I eat before bed I don;t sleep well...and I get up absolutely ravenous. I find I sleep best if I don't consume anything about 3 hrs b4 bed...but tea is OK...other than the getting up 10 times a night to pee

I think cooked food is definetly a sedative, and I think some raw food can be as well. I know Gorillas sleep after they eat bamboo, maybe I should try that...lol. I just checked your blog, VW, you are doing awesome! Very motivating!
