I need some guidance here from some expert fasters.
I'm doing a juice fast and from all the research I've just found conflicting information about how to treat the bowels during a fast.

Some say to do a salt water flush daily, or to drink a lax tea... some say to do nothing but drink my juices and water and leave it at that.
I'm confused here... especially when reading someone saying it is 'critical' to drink lax tea or do a salt water flush every fasting day

please help

Sorry. I've never done a fast. Not since going raw anyway. I have in the past, but have not liked how I felt. I'm sure someone will chime in here...I'd say go with what is feeling good for you. How about checking a book out of the library on fasting. I really don't know...sorry...

Your right--it does get overwhelming about what to do. It all comes down to personal decision.........

Something to think about. When you are fasting, your digestive system has shut down b/c you are void of food (fiber) to slough and carry out the toxins.

As the body diverts all it enzymes towards cleansing, detoxifying, healing, rebuilding etc, the toxins are drawn down to the colon. Also via other eliminatory organs: lungs, skin, liver, bladder & kidneys. Their GOAL is to be eliminated and removed. You will have some believe that assisting the elimination thru laxative teas, salt fushes, enemas or colonics, relieve the body of the overburdening of toxins in which can result in heightened detox symptoms b/c the body is trying to rid it all.

Some don't believe that assisting the elimination is natural.

When you rid the body of toxins, garbabe and waste, there is a increase in healthy blood flow. Healthy blood flow is CRUCUIAL in the organs carrying out the various functions and healing work.

Personal opinions:

Laxative teas: I don't advocate Senna. Cascara Sagrada if used properly is fine. It also tonifies the colon.

Salt flush: The fast I did a year ago I WOULD NEVER TOUCH THIS AGAIN EVEN IF I WAS GRANTED A MILLION DOLLARS. I find this harsh, draining and dehydrating. My body weakend a year ago using it. Luckily a medical psychic pointed this out with his psychic abilities otherwise I would have never stopped it.

I've suggested CALM by Dr Giliham to a number of members here last year and they found it to be pleasnat and not harsh. It is a powder form of magnesium --when used in larger dosages, neutralizes toxins and contracts the colon.

Enemas: I do warm water enemas with lemon/grapefruit juice. A little mag added sometimes. I don't use it everyday. I usually do it every 6-7 days.

To ease the flow of toxins, I find it neccessary to stimulate blood flow. My favorite in the morning is ginger for stimulation and tonification of liver/kidneys and at night, red clover--sometimes in reverse. Red clover can act as a bowel cleanse as well but not as dramatic.

Water: THis will be your best friend to help keep you hydrated and provide the oxygen to your cells to function properly and draw the toxins towards the colon.

Other ways to elimiate toxins: detox bath, skin brushing, essential oils/massage......

i hope not..i just needed to get things moving because i had eaten i guess too much fat before beginning my feast and it slowed me down. cascara sagrada is probably a safer bet..for some reason, though, it hurts my tum.

Thank you misslinda :D

That's very informative!! So I guess its a case of listening to my body and remembering that everyone is different. Right!! :D

Ok so I'll just see how things go and see what my body tells me it needs!
Hopefully it will run smoothly!

Thanks very much guys!! Big help! :D

What????????????????? did you have a high fat meal before feasting?

I don't think that using an eliminatory is neccessary prior to starting the fast. Shocking the digestive/bowel system is damaging--if you had eaten igh fat, would be ideal to give your body at least 12-15 hours to digest. ;) Always best to eat your way into fasting......move away from heavier foods then to soft fruits.

Cascara Sagrada is a bark and fiberous so a FULL glass of water is neccessary. It contracts the colon. But again, some people respond better to one kind than the other.

Oh another is Oxypowder

Please be delicate and conservative about your approach. The body/colon is very senstive.

IF anything, on a personal opinion, I would steer away from Senna and the salt flush.......

The most and BEST to you,

Whatever you [feel] is appropriate Callybop.

Had you used the oxypowder before in conjuction with fasting?

have you thought about colon hydrotherapy? it's more of a colon wash, but it might help move some stagnant stuff out and get you moving again....

many folks are for or against enemas and/or colon hydrotheapy. I am for, for myself anyways. Like last night I was having bowel issues, which are not typical for me. I was feeling rough and my stomach was aching and I felt like throwing up. I did an enema and had instant relief.

I didn't use oxypowder while fasting before misslinda.... but I did eat very healthily while I did the week long oxypowder 'cleanse' and drank loads of water... which I've been trying to make a habit for the past year anyway!:D

Thanks vitavegan and lay-lay for your replies. I think I just need to make sure I'm 'clean' in my bowels at the beginning of the fast.... well as clean as I can be anyway. From then on in its probably gonna be down to how I feel whether or not I take further bowel moving measures!! :D
