View Full Version : Who eats cashews anyway?

I have heard that cashews are not really raw. However, I purchased some organic raw ones from a local health food co-op. I have been raw for almost a year and a half. I usually eat high fruit, low fat. I really felt like eating cashews and honestly they tasted delicious and after eating them I had no ill effects. I figure if they weren't really raw I wouldn't feel well after eating them, but I felt fine. Anyone else feel this way?

The ones I buy from Trader Joe Say -Raw- and all the cook books call for them so I think they are?

I know we're not supposed to mention other places to get stuff on this board, but what I know about cashews is that unless you find the ones that are hand-opened, leaving the nut raw and fresh, they are heated in order to get the nut out of the shell. I've only found one place that has these, the cashews that will actually sprout and grow.

I feel that if they weren't really raw I would have had some type of bad reaction to them, especially after being 1.5 years raw. Maybe they were raw?

Daisyduke,
Someone once told me that he did some enzyme research and that the heating of the hard shells didn't really affect the cashews enough to destroy the enzymes. A while later after that day, I emailed him and asked him about it a second time to clarify but his response wasn't as reassuring as when he first told me in one of my classes.
However, like you, when I eat the organic "raw" cashews from my local food co-op, I don't get any ill effects either. But if I were to eat ROASTED cashews I get affected everytime! I use cashews as one of my main staple nuts - to munch on from time-to-time, in my nut milk, in my banana shakes and in my cheese recipes. I never feel like I just ate cooked food when I have them.
Just my 2 cents!

I use raw cashews that I get from Shazzie's site and they do not cause me any bother. If I eat something cooked I get hot flushes and do not sleep well so I think that they are raw.

I get raw cashews from my health food store. I am not going to stress over whether they are really raw or not. They work for me.

Me too. I initially bought them to make some veggie dip, but there won't be any left to make the dip if I keep snacking on them. ;)

Same here -- I figure since I'm not soaking or sprouting them, they lack the enzymes regardless of whether they're really raw or not. I don't overeat them and don't see any side effects (other than pleasure) from eating them.
