Rowan, it's not "raw" but it's a living food due to being a fermented food. Many use it because of that fact - I have some white miso here (chickpea instead of soy) and I'm also needing some ideas on what to do with it...I just bought it to have in case a recipe ever did call for it.

It's not raw but live. I used to drink regular miso "as is", heated in water. I don't do soy these days. I did buy chickpea miso after my mom's naturopath recommended it to her when she was sick. Oh my. Must be an acquired taste. I didn't care for it at all. Very sour. And I like chickpeas.

I make an Asian slaw with it.

I mix a teaspoon of Miso w/ an equal amt of of honey(or agave) & ACV

I mix it w/ fruit juice for a Salad dressing ( mixes well w Apple, Pear, Red Pepper, tomato, or any citrus)

I add a dash to veggie soup
(I have left over dried veggies in a jar, when it builds up I grind them as fine as possible & mix w/ fresh veggie juice (ex; Celery & Daikon)

Flavor Faux Rice recipes

I also mix it with acv to marinade veggies going into dehyd.

Hope that helps

wow, i did not know that miso was not raw. i've heard that nama shoyu is also not raw becuase the soy beans used are pasteurized. Is this the same w/ miso? i luv miso so this is bad news for me :(

I believe Nama Shoyu is raw. "Nama" means raw and "Shoyu" means soy or soy sauce. It is however made of soybeans and many people are avoiding soy in all forms because it is thought to be GMO.

If you look at the top of the screen it says not only "Raw Food Talk" but also "Living on Live Food". Miso is considered a live food as is nutritional yeast and some other things.

hey julie-

i'm pretty new to raw, and this may sound funny, but i enver thought about the difference between raw & live food. ahh, so this is making more sense now. my miso says no GMO's, but i'm reading that at this point its pretty hard to keep that claim. so, i'm guessing that like so many claims of "raw" on foods that aren't, that i may need to take no-gmo with a grain of salt :D
