what is your pre-race diet? I'm getting more into cycling and a friend, who is a very serious racer, invited me to sign up to race. He takes a number of goo packs and supplements before and during a race but I kinda wanna stay away from that stuff unless I can make them myself.

what do you do?

Most of those packs are just expensive sugar. That's why they give you quick energy. So you can make your own with fruit. I just cut up fruit, or make some good green juice to keep me hydrated and full of good raw energy while I work out for a long time. However I would say that you don't need these things unless you're planning on working out for more than an hour at a time. I use that kind of stuff for long runs training for a marathon (12+ miles) or in the marathon.

right. not really looking for the short sugar blast as some of these races last a couple of hours, sometimes spreading over a few days.

pre-run I have juice with "my concoction" blended in: 1T maca, 3T hemp protein, 1 T spirulina.....It keeps me going strong.....during long runs I may have fresh (juicy) fruits like grapes or oranges, raisins/dates or a lara bar...My options are limited as a runner but you can probably pack more on a bike...Just don't assume they will have things acceptable for you to eat along the way as I have made the mistake of doing.....Also, a blended juice of carrots, celery and ginger works great for on the run electrolyte replacement......or agave and water....Good luck!;)

What I was saying is that most of those goo packs are just sugar. Because your body can process them fast. So eating fruit does the same thing but raw.
