Hey y'all
I was calling around this afternoon, trying to find someone that carries nutritional yeast. Apparently no oone does. :(
Anyhow, I'm going shopping tomorrow and I want to get the stuff to experiment wiht my raw grilled cheese. I was going to try the rich cheese sauce recipe, which calls for nutritional yeast. I have a feeling that is what gives it a cheesey flavor?
Is their anything that can be substituted for the yeast?
Thanks!

In my area the local HFS's have always had it bulk for 30 years. That is for the food section. Then in the nutritional supplement section (vitamins) they always have jars of more intense more expensive nutritional yeast. I have noticed that it is used in the ingredients even on SAD chips as part of the spices. Perhaps the person(s) that answered the phone just do not even realize it is part of their inventory?
I just find it strange because out here I could not even get staple SAD ingredients for many years but I could always get that stuff.

I rarely take the advice of store employees, much less their knowledge of what's in store.
You just have to go into stores, yourself, and look. Nutritional yeast, if not in the bulk-foods section, is in the supplements section in containers in the health markets. You most likely won't find it at a supermarket.
Red Star is a ubiquitous brand. KAL brand is almost always found in cylindrical containers. Almost all vitamin stores (the little mom-n-pop ones, even) sell it.

They may just refer to it as yeast flakes, not to be confused with brewers yeast though.
If your store has a bulk bin section my guess is that all the employees don't know what's over there anyway.
Some don't even know the differnce betwen vegan and vegetarian,
sooooooo:confused:
Definately o search for yourself
Oh and if you have a 7th day adventist ABC store or conferenc ofice near you then they will sell it. All adventist aren't vegetarian but it's part of their health message so even their bookstores sell supplemental food stuff.
PEACE and CHICK PEAS:)
Oh, what's the difference between nutritional yeast and brewer's yeast? I assumed it was the same.

MArketing and recipie purposes differ, nutritional value the same
Nutritional Yeast- or the yellow flakes yeast, used in vegan reipies for that cheesy salty flavor
vs.
brewers yeast- in brown granulated form used primarily for beer making, leaving bread etc...
Didn't mean to make things confusing

How about a RAW alternative to nutritional yeast? Is there anything that comes close?

Ha ha, some not only don't know the difference between vegan & vegetarian, some don't even know what a vegetarian is! Let alone Vegan.
My local healthfood store always carries nutritional yeast. If you have a Save-On-Foods, I believe they carry it as well, for twice the price, but worth it :) It lasts a long while!! If they don't have it in stock, you can always order it.

Hey,
I checked around and can't find a 7th day adventist church near by. But that was a great suggestion though.
I live in Hootersville, USA. LOL We don't have have health food stores, or whole food stores around here. We do have a GNC and the health food section at Kroger, if you want to make the 'big' trip to town. I checked at both places, at Kroger I found Brewers yeast. You say that's not hte same, huh? I thought it might be, it says 'nutritional yeast' on the can, I went ahead and got it.
I asked the man working in that section if it was the same as nutritional yeast, nad he said everything in this section is considered nutritional. HA HA.
Well... do you think for the purpose of trying out a cheese recipe it would hurt to pretend it's nutritional yeast? Or would it give a really different taste?

You'll know if it's Brewers Yeast by its characteristic bitter taste. Nutritional yeast has that cheesy sort of flavor.

This link tells you the difference between the various kind of yeast. You can even buy it there, although I can't vouch for them. They just had a good explaination of the types.

And yes the nutritional yeast is what gives the cheese its cheesy flavor.

Best,
I live in Central Kentucky, about 60 miles from Louisville, and no one in this area carries nutritional yeast. GNC has Brewers Yeast but looked at me like I was crazy when I told them it isn't the same thing.

Bob's Red Mill brand is all over the place here, even in supermarkets. They sell packaged grains, flours, other stuff like Nutritional Yeast. I find that it is more expensive than the bulk food store but I'd get it if I had no other option.
The other thing I do when I can't find something is to order it on the net. Even accounting for shipping, it is usually less than running all over the place, wasting time and fuel looking for it.
