The first time I heard about the Raw food diet was when I saw Josie on the Tyra Banks show. I'm sure you've all seen the clip from Alissa's home page. I was SO inspired, I couldn't forget her, so I checked it out.
I'm wondering, is Josie here? On this forum? Or is her story continued somewhere on the sight. I would love to here how she is doing now and let her know how much I was inspired by her story!
Penny:o
I've been curious too because I know she was going to be the chef in Alissa's restaurant, but that didn't come to be. I wonder if she's still raw, or going to open her own place, all that...

The same thing happened to me. She had such radiance and a glow about her. I hope she comes in and gives us an update.

Jhosie is doing great.
I just spoke with her last week. She came out to stay with me for a few days and was really excited about moving here and working for us so we are still talking and keeping in touch with her.
She went off and on raw a few times but she told me the other day that she just cant go back now that she saw how great she felt and looked. So she is still raw, with a few sip ups along the way, but hanging in there!

That is SOOO great to hear! Thanks, Alissa, for the update. She was such an inspiration. If Tyra did an update show, I bet she would be the only one whose new lifestyle actually made a life-changing experience!

Oprah did a show with Karyn Calabrese, who has been raw for over 20 years.
Plus Karyn is local to Chicago, and African American, so I think that's why Oprah may have chosen her as the first person to rep the raw world on her show.
We'd have to find a new and juicy "hook" to get Alissa on it! ;)
Maybe a collaborative effort on the part of Trotter, Cohen, Cousens and Calabrese with celeb raw-ists for ratings pull.
A raw iron chef episode for summer uncooking?
Or something specific like people who have healed autism in theri kids, or cancer with raw. That'd snap a few heads to attention, but it'd also piss off the pharma companies who adverise on her show...hmmmm.

I think Karyn's youthfull appearance and beauty were what prompted her appearnce on the show. NOT RAW or her racial idenity. Plus this show was like 7 years ago.

Oprah also received a GOLDEN BRANCH AWARD
She's knows about raw.
Given her history of emotional eating and her fiasco with Optifast she may be just being cautious as to what she will brand on her show as the new best thing to be doing.
Beside her producer, Dr. OZ and yes her advertiserers gotta be made happy too.

Ummm-
If you read my post, you will see that I said this is MAYBE one of several reasons why she selected Karyn say, vs. "bigger" names like Cousens, or Wolfe. I did not imply in any way that this was he ONLY reason KAryn would be selected, just a cherry on top of a pretty well-established track record. Obviously Karyn's EXTENSIVE history, experience as a student of Ann Wigmore, and Chicago native status would make her stand out to their show's producers' selection process.
I'm not sure why selecting an African American, female advocate of natural living would be a bad thing. Oprah is black, and it is far too seldom that we see other black people on TV shown as leading advocates of healthy eating also able to crossing over into a biracial market. This stands out especially given that the black community, for genetic and probably socioeconomic reasons has a higher rate of obesity, diabetes and hypertension. Why would you see this as an insult rather than an effort to reach out to an underserved community?
Also, like it or not, the cultural divide tha still exists means there ARE some black people who are just gonna feel like the message resonates with them more if they know another black person has succeeded and thrived with it. In the inner city, there is still an "ours vs theirs" mentality sometimes when it comes to things like health, music, art and... even real estate. If you don't believe me, I invite you to watch the Dave Chapelle Show. Sad but true and you do what you can to give everyone a voice.
Personally, IF Oprah's choice in guests was influenced by the all-too-rare OPPORTUNITY to showcase a biracial Af. Amer. person as a spokesperson for health, I applaud her. Like it or not, there are plenty of caucasion health gurus out there. The proportion of mainstream black health advocates, vs the proportion of black people whose health condition warrants a spokesperson is pretty skewed. Why wouldn't we want to see someone as influential as Oprah making sure that people had a wide SPECTRUM of leading experts to consult?
PS- I should mention that I am not exactly white. Our family tree includes african American, Chicksaw Indian, Menomenee Indian, Oneida, Hispanic, Polish, Korean and Cherokee. If tha changes your sentiments of skepticism...
...then you prove my point.
Then you have proven my point.

WHY LOOK FOR CONFLICT???
I did no just post my oppinion willy nilly. It was posted in response to YOU pulling up a negative where there was intention only to call attention to something which COULD be positive. Helloooo???? Any antagonism here is at your behest.
I was only saying that I think whether or NOT Karyn's biracial origin played a part in her invite to Oprah, it is GOOD to see a black spokesperson for natural health on National TV. The statistics regarding the health of theblack community in the US would indicate that they need more visible, proportionate representation on the "health guru" stage. I think Oprah is a perceptive woman and may have seen a unique opportunity to showcase a person who is well respected by people of any race, but whose ethnicity may make certain groups feel validated and more comfortable with her message.
Kind of like how Luckitri says she is more comfortable with acupuncture from an Asian person.
Some overly sensitive people could take offense to that, but I choose not to b/c none was intended.
(I am deleting my comments here b/c they were redundant and it is USELESS to try and open a productive dialogue about this here or anywhere. As a brown person, sometimes I am stunned by my fellow brown persons' eagerness to find adversarial circumstances in every possible nook and cranny of conversation. Sometimes ya just gotta see things in the light they were intended
This is why there is such a lack of productive dialogue between whites and non-whites. Everyone has to walk on eggshells and everyone ends up afraid of each other and more divided. Why look for offense where there is none intended..and especially when an speculation was made to point out something which was seen as POSITIVE
And frankly, the last part of my post is b/c I have noticed that people get to say what they want to if they are brown and everyone else is afraid to say anything for fear of getting their head bitten off. We all gotta play by the same rules if we wanna live together in any semblence of harmony. Both sides have to be willing to cool out on the other.
Raw redbone- why are you looking for conflict here? I clearly said that I just thought it was a possible BONUS feature to make Karyns appeal to a wider viewership. Also, watch what? The timer on my dehydrator?

Yeah, resounding "whatever" about it.
We build our own walls.
We are programmed as a species to seek out war, and conflict, and to divide our numbers into tribal alliances whether along geographical, ethnic, or inter-ethnic classlines. Where there is the prospect of peace we will find the prospect of change more frightening and seek to continue our age-old feuds. You can twist any statement into something offensive- politicans and pundits make a living by it.. It is a world of duality, and friction makes some people feel more alive. We may as well accept our inherently divisive natures.

exactly. My very white-lookig pal just had his DNA analyzed. He is from Montana. His family thought they were from Scotland, but actually DNA showed that they were of Jewish descent, by way of the Balkans to Ireland where the Jews had a settlement sometime long before 1200ad, and long before there were present day europeans walking around. Then he found out that some of his Jewish tribe had mixed with Mongolians while they were still in the far eastern regions of europe. Upon coming to the west, they had been indentured servants (slaves) in the west indies, thereby mixing with African Slaves. came to America and mixed with Cherokees indians.
So how funny that Mr Blond, White-Guy all-American on the surface is actually African, Native Amer, Jewish, and Mongolian, and the offspring of slaves???
So we are all more mixed than our racial and nationalistic pride will allow us to admit comfortably.. The racial monkey shine is all a fictitious construct designed to keep people distracted from the harsher bits of reality by fighting among themselves.

Ha Ha. This is so true. Please do not delete your posts. I had a room-mate who I identified to my Dad as Apache. He screamed at me that I was being prejudice to even introduce her like that in conversation. I said, "Daaaaad, she grew up on the res, English is not her first language." I felt that I was trying to culturally identify her as other (not racially) to explain what happened next but he perceived it as prejudice. Actually I was going to try to make him laugh with some of her perceptions of life here in town after growing up on the res but he killed that laugh.
Years ago I heard a news article where some scientists found that African-Americans actually have different (and a few more) muscles especially in their legs and buttocks. I wanted to speak in wonder about it to my Dad. (I mean you can see a difference but it is not OK to wonder about it until a scientist proves that what you see is true.) Once again Dad screamed at me for being prejudice. So even in just observation that is totally non-prejudicial there is absolutely no exchange of information acceptable. I love it when I see the light in the eyes of mixed-race people who are open-minded and love to learn about others. It helps us learn about ourselves. In taking care of a dying relative I learned about my heredity for the first time - he loved the same foods I did. I did not know that they were our ancestral foods. I had never been taught.

This is true. At work some people can wear t-shirts that say "The blacker the college the sweeter the knowledge" type things and you know what would happen to a white person if they wore something similar but opposite. There would be serious legal action and reparations or restitution.
I know this thread is getting hot but you know I have mentioned before with no follow-up that I have been starving for a long time for inter-racial dialogue because there are things that happen even in the news that bother me and I would like to refine my perspective rather than be bothered.
It is well-known that racial tension is escalating not declining despite the huge population of mixed race kids and young adults.
The rules need to be the same for all if we are ever going to overcome this. And we do need to be able to speak openly and learn to speak without harming with insensitivity - but we also need to check our own sensitivities.
Sorry Jhosie! This thread was about you. And I came to it because I was interested in hearing about you!

I really disagree with this statement. Some of us truly are not built that way. Or I really cannot see it in some (like me of course. ha ha) Maybe because my family was strangers trying to assimilate and we were never really accepted? Because we had no community of people like us? No relatives hanging around or to rely on? No religious community? We were never accepted anywhere and us adult children have never found our place. We still are never accepted anywhere but we are happy with people different than ourselves.

That comment refers to our id, and primal survival instincts. We do actually unconsciously identifyu with people who have similar physical traits to ourselves. this is probably to program us to ensure our genetic imprints are more likely to survive or even dominate the gene pool in subsequent generations,
I think we use war as a uniting force...the enemy of my enemy is my friend kinda thing. B/c humans depend on groups to survive, this was a primal instinct to again, ensure that our group alliances translated into survival of our tribal genes. Now that tribal identity is not as tied to genetic imprints, but also extends to geographic borders, financial class, religious affiliation etc the old instincts still survive. Although some try to transcend the primal urge, we still tend to gather in groups of similars, which heightens our awareness of differences and makes us feel protected from "others"
I don't think this is universal, just a tendency among the majority of the global citizenry, as evidenced eons of civil wars, corporate treachery, etc.

Hey Amen Luckitri
The direction of this thread has taken a sucky turn.
I like that you can disagree with me, justify your position, and not say things like "watch it" as though you're gonnabeat me up after school or something, lol
I think your views on these issues would be interesting to hear, and like me, I can tell you have had your share of receiving discrimination from BOTH sides of the issue.
If you would like to email me, please feel free to do so.
But this thread has becomeas useless as most discussions of this nature. People get all wrapped up in their emotional responses, and are not gonna have an open dialogue about it cause it's just too close to their primal centers. Half the time, I think our individual past experiences, totally not having anything to do with the NOW, are too influential in how we interpret the actual events of the present. So Lovely Luckitri, if you want to have a varied, compassionate, but not necessarily PC discussion which is brutally honest, do get in touch.
I'm out party people!

well that's some people moving ahead on the evolutionary ladder before the rest of the world catches up. ;)
liike any change we gotta see what's really going on from both angles before we can actually improve anything.
I am candid about this stuff cause I grew uo being called the N-word, being banned from my schoolmates houses for my color, being beaten up by whites, etc. Yet, i do not think this is the way most white people act, or feel. I see the people I was raised with as uneducated, and to ignorant to be held to the fire. I certainly am not going to shut myself into a walled city, just b/c a few rednecks were meanspirited and probably to stupid to know better. I don't see how anything is gonna get better by always seeing one another as adversaries, or pretending to be nice to each others' faces.. and then talking SMACK about each other when only "our own kind" are in the room to hear what we REALLY think. At the same time, we both have to accept culpability for prolonging the divisions.
