Just wondering how other raw foodist handle parties, potlucks, things like that. Do you have any tips for eating out with friends?

A few weeks ago I was invited to a meal at the preachers house. I was nervous going in, but they had a salad and olive oil, so it went OK. The preachers wife asked me in a whisper, "are you on a diet?" Well, I went into a detailed explaination of what I was doing, only to realize she wasn't really interested. I should have just said no this is the way I like to eat, and left it at that.

My kids had there Easter party at girl scouts. There was some healthy treats there, but of course they ate a lot of the unhealthy stuff too. My kids were insane by the time we got home. They were bouncing off the walls, fighting. While I was there I had a cookie, and I got really moody after eating it, which made me short with the kids. The next day, I was stuffy, sneezing, and had 2 pimples. All from one cookie.

The next day was a church potluck. It was interesting to observe others behavior while eating and know that I used to do the same at these events. I found a fruit plate, but half of it came out of a can and was topped with cool whip, so I stuck with some apple slices. I let the kids eat whatever they wanted (I'm hoping they will eventually make the connection between food and feeling yucky on their own) My daughter's allergies seemed to get worse the next day, then the day after she had a really bad allergy attack. She also came up with strep. I'm betting all the sugar she had weakened her immune system.

Yesterday I had lunch with a couple other mommies, while the kids played. They were talking about how they had to get their caffeine fix to keep going. I was like, yeah, I gotta have my green every day :D It wasn't quite the same.

For picnics and barbque's I make coleslaw using Doe's mayo w/cabbage, tomatoes, and onions, soooo good! Everyone loves it!

For get togethers that require fingerfoods I take date balls rolled in coconut or sesame husbands. Always a big hit!

Another easy fingerfood are nori rolls, I use green patte in mine with a mix of whatever vege's I want to use (carrots, celery, avocado, etc.)

Would you go into the desert without bringing water? Ha! ha! For a raw-food person, the watchword is PREPAREDNESS. Always eat before you leave the house and bring a few snacks in a bag or purse. Don't show up some place hungry...and feel obligated to eat crap.

-Bring your own food - or simply don't eat! Order a glass of water or whatever. If anyone questions you, say you already ate or are on a 'special diet'....and are there to spend time with THEM. Don't answer any further questions. All questions about your diet should always be made politely, one-on-one, and in private. Don't you think?

Potlucks are among the easiest, because I alone get to choose what I bring. So I bring raw fruits or veggies. I also pad the potlucks with bread or buns, which I don't eat, but to contribute ALL raw food is often too expensive.

For parties where food is already provided, I simply prepare in advance for my own needs. I don't go around expecting that everyone is prepared for a raw-foodist ;)

At the church pot luck I thought about bringing a dish, but I live 30 miles from the church, and anything I fixed would have had to sit in the car getting hot for a few hours. Our church doesn't have a kitchen. So I wasn't sure about fixing somnething to bring.

I did stick an apple in my diaper bag just in case. ;)

yea~ I listened to that radio program yesterday about social situations and how being raw pushes peoples buttons even when you don't preach it or care what they eat at all.

I personally like Revvell's advice~ if they are rude " how is this any of your business" lol, but i guess it won't win you any allies at a place where you will see them again ~ but for strangers you will never see.... hey they asked for it, so maybe Alissa's tactful advice she gave on the radio show would be a excellent and polite yet firm way to deal.

For potlucks I bring at least one dish and make it huge. I also make it something I can make a meal of lest there be nothing else I can eat there. If I am dining at someone else's house I might ask if I can bring something. If there are a lot of people dining there and I know the host is making something I won't eat, I might just tell them I will come but will bring my own salad. I love salad and often make a meal of just that. I would probably also bring some snacky stuff like a nut and fruit mix that I've done in my dehydrator. I've come up with a yummy assortment of things using a few dates and a bit of water mixed up to make a soak for the fruit and nuts. Leaves them with just a bit of sweetness.

The best thing to do at a potluck is to bring the best fricken thing there! Plan ahead and really knock their socks off! Etch your name into the eons of potluck folklore and become the talk of the event.

Wait until it's all scarfed up, and only THEN start giving out the recipe.

The guests:

THIS is RAW
\

You:

YEP!
\
:D

Then causally mention that THIS is exactly the kind of delicious food you've been eating all day, every day, utterly to your heart's content, and you've even lost XX pounds by doing so!

Don't be surprised if you start getting on-the-spot conversions. Just tell them about Alissa's book, as well as this website, and then send them on their way.
