I've been thinking about this for a while. I been examining the consistency and different textures of flaxseed when it is ground and other things are added to it. Has anyone tried using flaxseed for a "seasoned meat" (like in tacos or spaghetti).

I'm trying to think of a way to amaze my die-hard meat eating friends and I'm thinking this flax just might work. I know it gets thick but I think with the right combo (like maybe roma tomatoes) it may take on the consistency of meat and since it absorbs it would easily absorb the flavors of whatever spices I use.

I've tried walnuts once and didn't much care for them. If anyone has tried flax let me know. I am experimenting this weekend.

Haven't tried that - but was pleasantly surprised by the consistency of soaked and then ground sunflower seeds - used for "tuna" in mock tuna salad. With one set of spices it can be tuna salad. With another, "chicken" salad. Maybe it'd work some other way, too? (the recipes to which I'm referring are in Rawvolution)

Flax gets so sticky though.

Let us know!

I've never tried flax - but it "may" have that kinda sliminess to it in the mouth.

I HAVE used soaked and rinsed (rinse well to remove any starchiness) steel-cut oat groats (one of the more "questionable" foods, I know) but that did pretty good when mixed (by hand) with mexi-seasonings, diced onions and tomatoes for a taco "meat" once or twice when I used it. It really reminded me a lot of the tvp-type products I used to eat when we first went vegetarian.

But if you don't want to use that, some soaked, sprouted and then pulse-chopped barley may do the trick too. Alissa's chili calls for barley and it gives her chili (which is AWESOME IMHO, esp. with her onion dip on top) a nice "meaty" sorta texture.

Thanks Rawks, Erta, and Beckla -

You know, I forgot about the slime factor with the flax since it wouldn't be dehydrated. If I have time, I might try the sprouts. If not, I am going to try the nuts again.

Keep the ideas coming everyone!
