 I searched, but didn't find exactly what I was seeking. . .
Is peanut butter considered raw? Are peanuts? How about the peanut butters where the ingredients are just peanuts and salt? What if you made your own?
I appreciate your insights.
I believe all peanut butter is made from cooked peanuts. Raw peanuts don't taste very good.

I think most people stay away from Peanuts because they have a mold called aflatoxin.

Solar Living- That's one of the reasons that I stay away from it. I find them much harder to digest than other nuts, personally.

almond butter is a great alternative and you can make it yourself to guarantee its raw (beware of the "raw" almond butter sold in stores, its not usually raw, use the search banana to see other threads on this.)
that said, if youre really desperate for peanut butter, i think natures first law sells "forest peanuts" that are raw and aflatoxin-free. so you could probably buy and grind these...but i have heard they dont really taste the same as regular peanuts, and they are quite pricey... you cant get the real "peanut butter taste" without roasting...
id suggest trying alternatives like almond butter

our local grocery store (wegmans) sells raw peanuts... now if they are TRULY raw or not I don't know.. but it says raw on the package (my coworker buys them now since I've been talking to her about raw stuff! haha)...
I guess you could take those and grind them up yourself and make raw peanut butter... personally, I like the taste of almond butter much more than peanut butter now though and couldn't go back! mmmmmmm. (even though it is more expensive!).
I've been wondering lately about making cashew or macadamia nut butter and how those would taste!

Peanuts are liver toxic I think, and they are root crops that get moldy with the aflatoxin or something that was posted above.
That is why so many people have allergies to them.. I don't eat them even though my health food store sells a "raw" version.

Yes, but according to the China study, aflatoxin lies dormant untill you eat animal proteins. So basically, it's not a threat to health unless you're a meat-eating animal killer :)

hmmmm...that would be really interesting if the toxin is dormant in the absence of animal protein...
ive also heard that sweetcorn has aflotoxin in it, even raw...anyone know about that? would that be dormant too in the absence of animal protein?

At least that's what the China Study said. (Read it! SO good. I'm reading it aloud with my mom, and she is totally going vegan with me now!)
It showed studies done on mice, and even when they were given well over the amount usually tolerated of aflatoxin, it only affected the mice when they were given animal proteins (I think casein, in the studies.)
Only when the mice were on animal protein diets, did the aflatoxin enter the cells and begin to create havoc. The studies go on to show that as animal protein levels went up and down (from 20% to 5%) the effects of aflatoxin sped up, or slowed down, respectively.

Why stop at almond butter? Cashew butter is fantastic too, and macadamia nut butter, mmmmmmm. I so spoil myself. You can order Raw Almond butter on line for far less expensive than in the grocery store.

ya but most cashews arent actually raw. they just say so because they arent roasted. gotta be careful with those. and by the way peanuts are pretty good sprouted with some cayanee, taste kinda like boiled cajun peanuts but cold and with a crunch, as well as a diff taste
I have read that peanuts are actually from the legume family and I think that is also why people may not eat them.
