does anyone drink cold pressed coffee? organic, of course! it is low in acidity unlike regular coffee and supposedly is processed differently/better in your body. i've seen a lot of raw food restaurants have it on the menu... i tried a blended coffee drink with this and coconut milk, agave and ice at a raw restaurant, it was great! anyone have any thoughts or experience with it?

I almost just posted a que on this too. I'm not clear on whether or not the beans are roasted. But let's be honest here. There are a lot of us lurking out there who are high Raw and still sipping coffee. I do know cold-brewed is a lot less acidic and therefore would trash our health less. I've heard it takes special equipment.
Purists: feel free to criticize this and make us coffee addicts see the light!

My raw cafe serves it...and they told me the beans are roasted. The advantage being that it is not cooked twice (so they say) and that it has low acidity so it doesn't bother your stomach. So not really raw.

not sure if the beans are always roasted, or if you cold press it yourself, if you can buy organic coffee beans unroasted, I've never actually looked into that part, thanks for bringing it up.
you can get inexpensive cold-pressers on amazon, and you just put the beans and water in overnight (well evening-morning, about 12 hours)

I am a coffee addict, despite just having gone almost four months without it. Last month I broke down and it has been straight downhill. Yesterday my sister actually gave me back the coffee maker, plus 3 pounds of coffee, that I gave her in November.
Raw, or nearly raw coffee . . . heaven help me . . . if anyone finds out where to get raw coffee beans, you must tell us. :) Now. Today. Immediamante! Must . . . have . . . coffee . . .

Just an FYI. Even though I have not come across this beverage, I can say with some certainty that it's roasted beans. Unroasted beans (which are really seeds, like a cherry pit) are green/grey in color and would be very bland and tasteless if turned into a beverage. Coffee gets its distinctive and wonderful flavor only after the chemical reaction that takes place from the high-heat roasting process.
I love and miss coffee, so if there is a tasty alternative that someone knows of, I would love to know about it! :D

I have heard of this, and I went looking for raw or unroasted coffee beans (thinking this was how cold-pressed coffee was made), and I couldn't find them anywhere. Plus, I now know that my local raw cafe uses roasted beans. So, I don't think it's really "raw." or healthy. :( Sorry. I, too, was once a fond drinker of the bean.

just to let everyone know there is a Tea that tastes like coffee. I got it at my yoga class. If I can remember then name I will post it but if someone else knows that might be quicker. It wasn't that bad. A caffeine free alternative.

David Wolfe said he drinks coffee sometimes. It is best to have a fresh brew or something like that though, and best not to abuse it.
I've read all the arguments for and against coffee, and quite frankly, the studies that say there ARE health benefits from moderate cofffee consumption far outweigh those arguments against.
Although I don't use wikipedia as a source and will question when it is used as a source, I checked the bibliography on this post and the references seem to be in order"

i read like a 250 pg report on all the negative affects of coffee, and i can assure you that it is very detrimental to your health, as well as extremely addictive. you put poison in your body, and you feel a "heightened" sense of awareness because your body is overworking itself to rid your body of the poison. all you are really experiencing is adrenaline, nervousness, and an increased heart rate.
i dont drink coffee, although i used to enjoy it on groggy mornings; now after i eat my fruit, literally 20 minutes or so later it feels like midday, or whenever i hit my stride on a SAD diet. there is no need for it (caffeine), and my energy levels are wholesome and maintainable, and i have such a sense of well being. i know you love coffee, but you also love cooked food, but gave that up. Yes coffee is harder because it contains a drug, but it's the same principle. You won't be able to realize the benefits from being free from it until you try for yourself, just like adapting to a raw diet. Take my word for it.
remember the nature of addiction, which is that the addict will find any evidence or support to rationalize their addiction. i am not criticizing anyone. this information comes from a former drug addict. if you want to keep drinking coffee (you being your addictive mind), then you will find all the studies that tell you it is beneficial to your health to continue drinking it (studies, by the way, based on a SAD diet).
on the other hand, if you are willing to admit that your current way isn't as fulfilling as you'd like, and are willing to take an honest look at yourself, you will find information on the negatie effects of caffeine. you will also look inside yourself and have a deep sense of knowing that you do not need it.
you can do it. and its worth it. good luck.

I know you aren't criticizing anyone, but that sounded incredibly condescending.
Willing to admit my ways aren't fulfilling as I would like? How about if I just like to have a cup of coffee every now and again? I like to have a glass of wine every now and then, too.
Does that make me an addict?

I saw a bag of coffee beans (I believe unroasted, they were sort of beige) at Live Live in NYC (a raw shop owned by the Quintessence people.)
I was really curious when I saw it, but, did not make a purchase.

All I know is the coffee milkshake my raw cafe makes with their cold pressed coffee (with roasted beans) is so frickin good!! I think it's my favorite thing now. I don't drink coffee anymore though...just a rare treat for this. I switched to tea b/c coffee upset my stomach. And I accidentally weened myself off my daily cup of tea by drinking green smoothies...I really had no intention of giving up the caffeinated tea...but I don't need it anymore and didn't notice I had stopped drinking it for a week or so.

Did an Yahoo! search and found this:
Raw Coffee Beans (http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=RAW+COFFEE+BEANS&ei=UTF-8&fr=moz2)
I used to drink a cup of coffee every morning (or more) with my husband. I quit that 30 days ago (yay! I think today is #30!), and I have not looked back. I still am realizing that I don't deal well enough with my anger and frustration, but I know that the coffee caused me to feel this roller coaster of anxiety which has come to an end.
My husband has been drinking much less coffee, just by default. He has had coffee on a few separate occasions since I quit drinking it, and I have looked for his behavior changes. He was SIGNIFICANTLY more irritable on the second half of the days when he had coffee.
It really is an addiction for most coffee drinkers too. I did work at Starbucks for five years; I can attest to the befores and afters, and people who switched to tea, etc.
Based on my experience, I hope that I will never drink coffee again, even though I was at one time the queen of the bean! I even got a special certification called "Coffee Master," which is a little silly... My point is I have LOVED coffee, the taste, the smell, etc.
I also LOVED many cooked foods. I think this back-and-forth debate about coffee is much like the debate about different diets. In the end, for cooked food and coffee, whether or not some guy who writes for some magazine with some other guy who does some study agrees, my body agrees that this makes sense.
But what does your body think? That may be your answer!

Amen! :) I found that post condescending too...
I have organic decaf (not a raw food LOL) occasionally (and it's fair trade, btw). I just love the full sensory experience of coffee :)
I have organic wine (small 2-3 oz. glass) every 3-4 months.
So, if you're an addict, I'm an addict too...You're in good company.
Sorry, don't mean to be "sassy."
I'm not 100 percent raw, but hats off to those who are "RawEdge"--my husband's term for people who approach the raw vegan diet/lifestyle similar to StraitEdge folks--those who don't drink/smoke/do drugs, etc.
I'm not into labels I guess...just doing what works for me :)
Hugs, with loving intentions,
Lisa
:o eh, I'm not 100% either.... I have the utmost respect for those who have made that commitment, though, and I certainly would never purposefully discourage anyone from aspiring for that. Maybe I will make that comittment down the road a bit....
As far as coffee consumption goes, I think it's like a lot of things... it has to be up to the individual. I don't believe there's a lot of hard evidence it's really bad when consumed in moderation, and I've looked... not just the other day, but on several occasions. However, I certainly am not trying to convince anyone it's good for them. Some folks are really sensitive to caffeine.
On a side note, my Granny died at age 103 in 2003. When she was taken to the hospital the night she passed, the physicians asked what meds she was on and just couldn't believe it when my Aunt told 'em that she only took aspirin and Tylenol every now and then for occasional pain. She was a 2 cup a day coffee drinker.

Buying raw coffee beans is sort of a trend right now; but it has nothing to do with making "raw" coffee. People are roasting their own at home.
I'm not sure, but I think raw coffee beans consumption may be toxic and the beans have to be cooked (generally roasted, of course).
There are a lot of coffee alternatives out there, the Ramon Nut, being one.
Also, chopped maca is being used, though it's cooked, it's roasted much "lighter," still retaining many, if not most, it's nutritional properties (similar to gelatinized maca).
I just placed an order with Natural Zing and noticed they are now carrying a similar product, "MacaPunch Xpresso. (http://www.naturalzing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_48&products_id=305)"
Rawganique (http://www.rawganique.com/Food/Food-ramon-coffee-substitute.htm) also has a combination maca-ramon nut, (I forgot the name of it - I think it was "McCafe Coffee Substitute" or something similar - the combination, supposedly being the most "coffee-like," and better than either one alone). They seem to be out (or no longer carrying it), but you can buy the roasted maca and the ramon nut separately, and just make your own, apparently.
I'm sure we'll see more maca and ramon nut (with a little cacao thrown in) versions coming out all over very soon.
Best,
Shirleyh

Is it safe to have green coffee beans? I think that is why they started the roasting process.
Is it good just grounded as unroasted?

Personally, I have no guilt about having one small (as in 6-8oz) cup of coffee in the morning. It's rare that I ever have anymore than that. I also know that I could quit drinking it at anytime, so it's more out of habit/ comfort. I have stopped drinking it before and it doesn't seem to affect my mood at all. The only thing it does is make me a tiny bit hungrier in the morning, which I think is actually good, as not being hungry, I barely eat much anyway. And I remedy that by bringing an extra piece or two of fruit to work.

Shoney: The best way to wean off is get "teecino" http://www.teeccino.com/ make it in your coffee maker/french press etc and add 1-2 tsp coffee then decrease the coffee to 1 tsp and then 1/2 tsp and then you'll find out that you can actually just do teecino !
P.S. to me the flavored ones are a waste of $$$ just do the original!Joz

So here is the deal with "cold pressed or brewed coffee" it's technical name is toddy and the beans are absolutely roasted. I work for an upscale coffee roasting company and actually designed our summer drink menu which includes a fair amount of toddy. So all it is is regular coffee beans ground course then water is poured over them and allowed to sit for 12 hours then strained and drained and then you have delicous wonderful toddy. Highly caffenated and way less acidic. It is amazing. I have just completed 35 days without coffee and it is very hard especially in my business. I don't know how long I will last but for now I am going strong, but only because of Kombucha.
