View Full Version : Lunch at church

They asked me last Saturday to bring a salad to lunch today. I looked at the list of what kinds of foods each is bringing and asked who's bringing fruit. "You!" she answered.
Yesterday I made most of a salad and packed various frozen fruits in a container. This morning I finished making the salad and made a smoothie. The smoothie consisted of pineapple, banana, maracuyá, marañón, guava, strawberry, and orange (the last two weren't frozen). The salad was lettuce, kale, tomato, avocado, jicama, purple cabbage, spiralized cucumber, onion, cilantro, freshly grown sprouts, and two sprigs of oregano from the pot on my patio. I had to explain the smoothie, since it looked like a nondescript off-green mush, but those who tried it and the salad said they were rich.
Their typical salad was a bag of shredded Iceberg and a few tomatoes. That didn't fill me. I think they now have a better idea how I can be satisfied eating like this.

that's so awesome... I know when I first went raw I was so surprised and excited to try things besides apples/bananas/and iceberg lettuce (which doesn't have much nurtitional value anyway!)

Yep...
The same thing has been happening to me. They ask me to bring something to potluck, and are suprised. Yesterday after church, we had a picnic and they were doing taco salad. So I brought raw taco meat , sliced avocado, and sliced peaches. Oh...and also raw ranch dressing. Quite a few liked it, and were pleasantly suprised. :)
Are you sda?
Warmly,
Mishka
Sounds like an awesome salad. Wish I could have been there!

Way to show em Pierre! You Rawk! The church I go to is pretty ummm. filled with SAD people. I have yet to meet anyone there who is even vegan or vegetarian, let alone Raw!

Several people at church are vegetarians, and a common item at lunch is "carne vegetal". But the rice is white, and I've never seen anyone else bring olives, even though Ellen White recommended them. There is a guy who bakes whole-grain bread.
Hey Pierre... what are maracuyá & marañón. I've never heard of them. I tried a google search but as I suspected, results weren't in English.

I was just about to ask this same question! I've never heard of those before either.

Maracuyá (from Tupi "mborukuîa", or some variant, meaning "gourd-like food"; the seeds are attached similarly to the way they are in melons) is passionfruit. Marañón, which I've talked about before, is the accessory fruit of the cashew. (The true fruit is a soft shell with a lining which is much thicker than a mango's. I suspect that this lining is actually the pit.)
Maranhão, which looks like the Portuguese cognate of marañón, is a state of Brazil. I've sometimes joked about eating tocantines. ;)

I can so relate! Sounds like we attend the same place on Sabbaths. It's interesting cuz even with the health message...potlucks can be a very unhealthy place. My dh and I call it veggie rubber! Beware of it! lol!
But I do have friends encouraging me to bring some more complex dishes to expose people to...so I have a few times :). My other raw friend also goes to our church...but doesn't like potlucks much cuz there is so few items there that are raw.
Have you read the book:
"And God said eat raw food"...talking about dentists... he's a dentist from our church who wrote it not to long ago. D. Wolfe sells it on his site. It's not too long and is packed with quotes from the bible and egw.
gotta run...

Yep I got that book - lost or misplaced it, though. Next time I order something from Wolfe I'll get a few more copies.

Years back I went to Eden Valley in Loveland, CO. I loved visiting and taking some "classes" up there. Not too far from the house but a wonderful ride. Even went to Danny Vierrra's event in Lodi, CA. I am not however SDA. I do have some of Ellen White's teachings. I love Dr. Day a SDA. I go to a massage place and met a SDA, but sadly he doesn't get the message as I always encourage him starting with smoothies.
My church encourages soul, greasy foods, but they do have a buffet before Wed. services and do offer many SAD dishes, but always a salad. Nothing really I care to try there however.

Carolg~
You've been to the Lodi health fair, the Vierra's put on??? It is such a great place to learn ! That is where I first found out about the "cellucizer" rebounder and Dr. Day too :). I actually don't live that far away from there...just a little over an hours drive. I'm glad you got to go...I love events like that :)
Pierre~
My other raw christian friend also bought a ton of those books and passed them out to all the people he knew who were "ripe" to hear it and also left some in all the church libraries of the different churches he attended. It's one of the reasons I looked into raw and have now made it a lifestyle.
