View Full Version : That one "little" exception

Please don't judge.... i've definitely paid for my mistake... i'm sharing this as both a warning and because i'm wondering if anyone else had a similar experience.

So I've been raw for several months. It has been difficult but I keep trying. This last weekend was my birthday, and being a poor college student, I've never really made raw desserts, so I thought that having a few pieces of vegan (not raw) chocolate cake for a special occasion wouldn't be that big of a deal. I assumed my body was healthy enough to just flush out the processed white sugar and flour from the cake and i'd be fine.

Well, i think my body did flush those toxins out of me, but it took a few long and painful days to do it. First of all, I caught a really bad cold (probably because my immune system was down). And then I had one really bad night where it felt like I had the flu and food poisoning (this was probably when my body decided to get rid of the cake). It was horrible, trust me, and those few minutes of indulgence when I ate the cake were definitely not worth the stomach aches and pains I felt afterwards.

I'm wondering if anyone had a similar experience? Also, I would assume that if someone has not had dairy in years that its possible there body would no longer be able to make the enzyme lactase to break down the lactose in dairy. But since sugars are in fruits, a raw vegan wouldnt ever lose the enzymes needed to break down something like a processed sugar. Does anyone know of a biological explanation as to why suddenly having a cooked or processed food would make a raw vegan sick?

Thanks
Katie

I'm sorry for your discomfort!

-It doesn't sound too mysterious to me. Greater health often = greater sensitivity to crap! LOL.

-Strength to you and YOUR goals!

Many people have similar tales to tell. Plus since your digeestion is probably super efficient. In my case, bad stuff seems to get rejected as though someone pushed a turbo-eject button. I guess it's nice to know that we get rid of stuff quickly.

I think you owe it to yourself to make a "birthday plus 7 days" cake when your discomfort is all cleared. everyone deserves a birthday cake they can enjoy!

Vann167. I know that when cooked food is eaten, the body undergoes leucocytosis...a proliferation of white blood cells...which means your body is treating the cooked food as a poison. Maybe, by eating raw food for so long, your digestive tract is cleared from a lot of mucoid plaque, which was a protection against cooked food. Now, anything you injest, is absorbed more easily. Without that protective barrier, your body becomes sick.

I am transitioning to raw. I am consciously reducing the amount of cooked food I eat. I still find it hard to digest, eventhough I eat it more than you. I think bad experiences will just cause us to eventually say, this isn't worth it... Eventually cooked food will no longer be tasty, and there will be so much discomfort after eating, that we will have no inclination to ever walk the cooked path again.

Yes, I've certainly had similar, unpleasant experiences. I used to get mad at myself for those "relapses," but now realize it's huge confirmation that I'm on the right path being Raw. Congratulations on the insight there.

Katie, I could feel some of the discomfort described as I read your post. EVERY time I slip back into cooked food, my body throws off similar detox symptoms. The last venture, I had only been all raw for a few days. The return to cooked resulted in a very uncomfortable and painful episode. Would like to say it was a turning point......Nah... but it's getting better. Like Sooboopa, I've been weaning myself back toward all raw because feeling well just tastes so much better!

I'm committed to the raw challenge for April - even getting an early start. This feels like a genuine turning point for me, and I feel encouraged by the excellent and consistent support from the dear hearts of these forums.

Hope you'll treat yourself to a decadent, raw dessert - Happy Birthday!

:( i know that feeling too... and the dissapointment, when the cake, sadwich whatever didnt tatse as good as you imagined at all...

but for me its allways worse to get back on the tracks!!! when i do the smalles exception, i completely loose it!!! for days... or even weeks... like just recently...especially when I had some emotional touching moments.. And it can be so hard to start again... especially if your still feeling bad, stressed whatever...And I allways know before when I will fail again... that can be really entiring...

I know I am not normal... ;)

I know how Katie feels. I made the mistake or eating cooked food...and paid for it:eek:. I have serious dental issues and a nasty bacterial infection that I had no choice but to take medications for. All because I let the temptation for cooked food take me over.

I just got over a sinus infection and severe dehydration...no more junk for me!

Remind me to stay away from cooked food. It does NOT() do a body good.
