View Full Version : SORES ON THE SIDES OF MY MOUTH...from Pineapple?

Hey all,

I had a huge craving for pineapple the other day and I went to the store and got one. When I got it home I washed it, cut it up into triangles and had my fill. I felt fine and went about my day.

I took the remaining slices and put them in the fridge with seran wrap over them.

The next day I decided to have a few more slices of pinapple for breakfast

I noticed as I took a bite I felt a slight tingling sensation on the edges of my mouth. I really didn't think anything of it and had a few more slices of pineapple. The next day...BOOM!...I look in the mirror and I see these little red sores on the side of my mouth (NOTE: Not cold sores). The sides of my mouth are have these little red infections and I don't know what to do. Needless to say I've STOPPED eating pineapple or anything else like oranges, lemons, limes, or anything else that's acidic that might inflame it further.

I put some peroxcide on the sides of my mouth as well as some Neosporan in the hopes it'll help the healing process.

I called my friend who's really big into the whole Raw food thing and he told me that he never heard of that and just lumped it into the category of the detoxification process. Now I don't dispute the detox that results when you first get on Raw food - namely: Headaches, slugglishness, tired, etc. but, Sores on the side of my mouth as a result of detox? That doesn't sit right with me.

I guess the weird thing is: I've eaten raw pineapple plenty of times when I was out at a resturant and they usually served it with desert but, it was always with a fork and knife - thus the sides of it never touched the sides of my mouth.

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

Or better yet...does anyone have a possible solution?

It's been four days and the infection doesn't seem to be getting any better.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

But sores in my mouth are the price I sometimes pay. Love hurts, I guess.

Never have had them on the outside of the mouth. All yopu can do is keep it clean. I have read that hydrogen peroxide can actually impede wound healing since it damages the tissue further. You may want to just stick with the neosporin.

My mom ruined her Hawaiin honeymoon by eating too much pineaple at the Dole pineapple farms. HEr mouth was fried from it, and she broke out in a rash. So...eat the pineapple with respoect, I guess! lol.

this happens to me if i eat too much pineapple. ive come to learn that at the first sign of a slight tingle, i have to stop or else ill get these sores. i think of it as my body saying "ok, i dont need anymore of this now."

give it about a week. i wouldnt put anything on it, personally. maybe just rinse with warm salt water. i know theyre painful/uncomfy. :(

I also had sores but not from pineapple. I figure it was detox as I dont get sores on the sides of my mouth. I think all I did was put some carmex or something like that on. It did not take long to go away. I dont remember how long but dont remember it taking 4 days.
I eat pineapple a lot along with grapefruit. If anything would do it i would think it would be grapefruit as that is so tart. I can eat things now i could not before without indigestion which is a very nice thing to have happen.
Try to eat pineapple without touching side of mouth. Sure would be a shame to give up such a great tasting fruit.

It's not an infection (at least doesn't start as one), and it's not acid either. It's bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapples.

You may also have mild scurvy, in which case you do want to eat oranges or limes. Or you could freeze the pineapple and make a smoothie with some camu-camu or acerola.

I USED to get sores from pineapple, until I learned HOW to store and cut them. When you get your pineapple, until you are ready to use it, store it green top side down. Then a day before you want to eat it, cut the green top off and store cut side down in the fridge AT LEAST overnight. I've even stored them a week and they've been fine. This allows all the acid and sugar in the pinapple to drain thoroughly throughout. I learned this from someone who lives in Hawaii. It truly works. I gave up eating pineapples because it hurt my mouth so bad until I tried it this way. They are sooooo sweet when using the abovementioned method. It makes sense, they grow green side up, they are shipped green side up, and displayed in the store green side up. So flipping it when you bring it home, then cutting it and storing it in fridge cut side down disperses all the goodness. Try it and see...
Good luck!

Yep...that's exactly what the produce guy just told me a month ago! He recommended cutting the top off, and setting it "on top" of the fridge for a day. This way the warmth and gravity would draw the juices throughout the fruit. I find the flavor exceptional this way...slurp:p

I've never had that happen before when eating pineapple, but I don't eat it very often. It sure was great to read what everyone had to say in case I or anyone else has that happen to them.

I've been doing this, and the pineapples are so much better! Thank you, veganforlife!

I have a mouth full of canker sores..searching posts i think this is it, its from pineapple!I also tried drinking aple cider vinegar around the same time. Think both may be the cause. Ouch..so nasty these little sores. Eating bananas whipped up in FP, only comfort so far.

Yes, this probably is a bromelain issue, although I used to experience it when eating too many figs. I solved the fig issue inadvertently, by improving my intake of Omega3 EFAs. I don't know whether this might have any influence on your pinapple issue but it's worth considering (EFAs are an important constituent of healthy cell membranes). Lecithin also contributes to healthy cell membranes.

If nothing else, at least pineapple is high in vitamin C! :)

Omg that's exactly what happened to my friend's sister! She ate some pineapple and the same day got some sort of sores around her mouth. It took a couple of days for it to disappear. She figured its some sort of allergy.

Does everyone rinse their mouth out with water immediately after eating pineapple? This is what my husband got me doing, and it seems to help also.

Water alone, or water with a little sea salt works great. Do NOT brush teeth the conventional way immediately after eating citrus (rinse first), it will ruin your teeth.

It may be a yeast related condition brought on by excess consumption of sugar, plus the acid in the fruit aggravates the condition just that much more.

Just a thought.

I concur. Pineapple does this to me too unless it is very ripe and sweet.

Yep, pineapple (and strangely, kiwi) do that to me as well. Don't know why though.
