Hello,
I am wondering if anyone has an opinion about spirulina versus hemp protein powder - which one is better for protein supplementation (like in a smoothie)?
And, does anyone have a good source to refer too?
Thank you for the help.
We use both in our smoothies.... each has their own benefits.
Hemp is probably the better protein supplement. We do google searches and read the packaging to compare products. Currently we are using a Nutiva hemp powder mix that we like a lot.

If the hemp comes powdered, is there any issue with rancidity, do you know?
Hey Stina, we have not noticed any rancidity in the powders. We also eat the whole hemp seeds, so we have a little to compare.....
The powders usually come in light-proff containers and as long as they have not been stored in a too hot of an area, they seem to be fairly stable. We also refrigerate after opening.

Excellent question Stina! I don't know for sure, just common sense wise tho...the "package" is broken...so I'd assume the oil may begin to oxidize. I would guess more damage or oxidation would occur the more it is processed (ground to powder). So probably, hulled seeds would be the lesser of the 2 oxidation wise. What does any one else think?
We also use both...hemp seeds, and spirulina. I put the in our green drinks, and fruit smoothies. That way I feel like I have it covered. I'm so suprised how my daughter downs those green drinks...she inspires me:)

i dont smoke, but i am sure i could get quite a large amount of seeds from acquaintances of mine... my question is are pot seeds the same as hemp seeds? or is hemp THC free? that would save money if i could just get seeds from my pothead buddies.. ha

They're pretty close to the same thing. You just won't get a felony drug charge for having hemp seed in your fridge like you will with pot seed.

Remember it's the fats that go rancid... and the product is the separated protein. I don't think rancidity would be an issue.

Yeah, I think they both serve different purposes too! I have both - got my hemp powder (well, actually the seeds) from Alissa's website (she sells hemp seeds, powder and oil) and I recently got my spirulina from a local health food store - the Hawaiin Pacifica brand.

I'm curious as to the flavor of spirulina. Since it's an algae (I think) I assume it wouldn't have the most pleasant taste in a fruit-based smoothie...

It has a faint seaweed taste, but once in a smoothie with strong flavors taking over, you do not taste it. My typical smoothie is:
2 cups filtered water or almond mylk
frozen fruit - like pineapple, grapes, blueberries, strawberries, banana etc.
and a handful of greens - spinach, or romaine lettuce leaves.

Agree with Veganforlife...you don't have to use a whole lot of it, I use about a tsp. per half container-full of smoothie and don't taste it at all! I even used a tablespoon once before and didn't taste any fishy/seaweed flavor.
My favorite lately is:
An apple and/or pear, parsley, banana, orange, pineapple with spirulina.
i love spirilina sprinkled on / blended with melon, or papaya, or coconut, or almond milk, banana and date smoothies, or (super yum!) durian and dates!
i also enjoy a glass of water with a touch of spirilina and stevia alongside a fruit meal.
Hemp protein is heartier (fibre and fat). I often choose hemp protein after a workout when my digestive system is all fired up. Great in simple smoothies. (ie. OJ, berries, banana, ice)
I use spirilina in heartier (or high volume) green smoothies to keep my tummy happy.;)
Brandon Brazier has lots of great hemp protein smoothie recipies in his new book "The Thrive Diet". This book is awesome. I highly recommend it to raw athletes.
It is very affordable. The paperback addition goes for 24$ CDN.
The recipies are simple, tasty, and never call for more than a blender or food processor.
cheers!

I found it under SUpplements - I was looking under food only. Thank you!
BTW - does anyone know the difference between Alissa's Coconut Butter versus the Virgin Oil De Coco? They both sound really good.
