to see what it tastes like, etc. and I don't know what to do with it except sort of snack on it and put it in salads. Also, is it supposed to be "chewy" or can I soak it and make it less chewy? Any suggestions for this kelp newbie is much appreciated! Thanks!

what did you get? konbu?
typically konbu is used to flavor the basic stock (dashi) used for miso soup. it is also used to flavor simmered dishes such as shabu-shabu, sukiyaki and oden
when i've cooked with it in the past it gets soft and a lil slimy
i usually get wakami
to make a wakami salad , first i soak in a lil water, drain it, sprinkle with some vinegar, sesame seeds, sliced green onions, cucumbers, some pepper flakes and maybe a lil soy
with konbu you could cut it into lil pieces, mix it with some nut flour, sesame seeds and make bars. i've also known people to flake it and use it to season things instead of using salt

I got the Kombu and it's whole. This is what I got:

Could I maybe use it to roll things up in, like nori?
Thanks!

I get my kelp in powder form, sneak just a little into my smoothies but also sprinkle a little bit on salads. Not crazy about the taste. Perfer dulse but sometimes desperate enough for minerals to stir water up with a teaspoon of kelp and just swig it.

Alissa's crab cake recipe is one of my favorites and calls for Kelp. Have some in the dehydrator right now!
