Does anyone know if packaged frozen corn or other veggies at the store are raw?

Do they parboil before freezing?

Thanks ;)

Hi SunVegan,

Most veggies are parboiled before frozen, as far as I know.

All the best,

Opinion:

-No. ANYTHING that goes into a package pretty much has to be rendered enzymatically inactive in order to be sold (via cooking or chemicals). This process kills bacteria/mold/fungi and also destroys the enzymes that would allow the food to be at it's optimum fresh state.

-I personally do not regard frozen food to be as optimal as fresh, raw plant food. Why settle for second best? On the other hand, if it supports YOU on your raw food path, I say go for it - and you have my 100% support!

Pick a couple of company's whose frozen foods you would consider buying and write their customer service to ask them. Asking questions about some things here are going to get maybe not completely informed answers unless you get lucky and someone actually works in the industry you are inquiring about.

When I froze produe, some was completely raw and some required a fast blanching which I am not sure whether that kills all the enzymes or not sit the food is barely in contact with the hot water.

You might also try using Google to answer that question:

Natural enzymes in vegetables cause flavor, color, texture, and nutritive value changes. Freezing slows enzyme activity but does not stop it. Frozen vegetables will become tough and lose flavor during storage unless enzyme activity is stopped by blanching before freezing.

Based on what I just Googled, I'm going to say that they are probably frozen after blanching for 2-10 minutes in boiling water.

The exception is probably frozen fruit as boiling would destroy the fruit.

that is what I have always thought, that frozen fruit was more Raw..LOL..as in, was not cooked, but was enzymatically less active because it was frozen, but the enzymes were not completely inactived.

I use frozen sometimes, esp. strawberries for smoothies... :-) and know that different raw recipes call for frozen fruit..

I do not worry about it..but just keep the majority of my choices fresh..

:D

I have heard that frozen veggies are NOT raw, but many frozen fruits are. I would write the specific company if you are concerned.

But fresh is always best and the tastiest!! :)
