View Full Version : What to do with a perfect cantalope?

Hello all,

I have a super duper nearly-ripe organic melon sitting on my kitchen counter.
I always eat my melon plain or mixed up in a blender with a shot of spirlina and flax/hemp oil...

I am looking for new ideas.

How do you eat your melon?

MMMMMmmmmmm, plain! Makes my mouth water thinking of them coming into season here on the east coast. YUM-OH!
I have frozen them when I've gotten an abundance of them. I'm anxious to hear of other ways. I'm thinking a salad with walnuts and raisins and coconut and crisp green romaine lettuce...and of course the melon!

any type......eat it alone or leave it alone.....

It was the first lesson in raw and food combining that my mother taught me. Or I should say, the first one I listened to.... :) ;)

Cantaloupes
Cantaloupes are considered the most nutritious of all fruit. The Center for Science in Public Interest compiled a list of fruits by their nutritional value. Cantaloupes came in first place, followed closely by watermelon, then oranges. Next came strawberries, grapefruit, pineapples, tangerines and peaches. Sauntering in at last place comes the lowly plum.
Cantaloupes are packed with vitamins A and C. Per pound, this fruit has 15,000 I.U. of vitamin A and three times the vitamin C content of apples. It also contains myoinositol, a lipid that helps with anxiety, insomnia and in battling hardening of the arteries. Cantaloupes contain the greatest amount of digestive enzymes. Melons are recommended by the American Cancer Society as powerful agents in the fight against intestinal cancer and the all-too-common skin cancer, melanoma. One average-sized cantaloupe contains approximately 100 calories, yet is dense in nutrients. This makes melons a perfect juice for weight loss.
Melons should be purchased firm, sweet-smelling with a soft navel. During the summer, cantaloupes are cheap. To check for ripeness press firmly against the fruit with your thumb. They should give a little but not be soft.
Melons can look decrepit, but still produce excellent juice. A major part of the cantaloupe’s nutritional value is in the rind. Juicing the rind will give more nutrition but diminish the taste. In juicing cantaloupe with the rind, scrub the skin well with water and an organic cleaner. Slice and juice, seeds and all. When juice fasting, melons are the most convenient source of cheap, nutritious, delicious, refreshing, colorful, revitalizing, energizing juice.

you should try this - cantaloupe soup - scoop out the cantaloupe into a blender and add some cinnamon, garam masala, & curry powder (1/2 - 1 tsp each) blend until smooth, serve chlled. I could eat this every day - it's GOOD!

Last year, my little garden produced 2 small cantelopes (my first try at growing them) and I ate one...and shared the other.
I eat mine all alone. As a food combining rule, melons don't digest well with anything else!

Personally I used to love canteloup milk shake (canteloupe and milk). I haven't tried it raw but am guessing you can use almond milk and do the same thing. Or how about mixing up the milk shake and putting it in the freezer to make some yummy ice cream.

I woke up this morning and caught sight of my precious melon sitting all alone in the fruit bowl...
I ate it all up with the spoon! :p
(and used the rind as a bowl for fruit salad with bananas and strawberries.)

I, too, look forward to melon season on the east cost!
(This puppy was imported from the southern hemisphere and set me back 6$ CDN... but it was worth it!)

Add me to the plain melon lovers.

It ain't broke, and it digests best alone. I can't fathom adding an oil to a canteloupe. They are sweet and luxurious all on their own.

My favorite is juiced cantaloupe mixed with juiced peach. Sooooo good!

I also eat it with a spoon. Cantaloupe is one of my favorite foods of all time.

Mmmm, just had a perfect canteloupe -- ate it with a spoon, "MMMMMM"d every bit. It was soooo perfect! I had spent a few minutes touching and checking out the canteloupes at the farmer's market -- and the guy at the stand laughed at me then sniffed it and said it was indeed a good one! Yes!

All right, now I'm off looking to see if there is something I can do with the seeds (enjoyed the idea of using the outside as a bowl. I may do that with the next one, will need to cut it in half instead of fourths though.) :)

This probably won't help you, but my pet birds like cantaloupe seeds. Maybe you could feed the outside birds if you don't have inside birds.

That's a lovely idea if I can't use them. I could feed them to the pigeons in the common area! :)
