View Full Version : What is this energy boost supposed to feel like?

Everyone who goes 100% raw talks about having so much more energy, where they sleep only 5 hours/day and don't feel sluggish or slow during the afternoon. Even my sister, who was 100% raw for two months, told me about it. But here I am on day 25 of my 30-day challenge and I still feel tired during the day (more than I was on the SAD). I've lost 24 lbs, which is fantastic, but my jury is still out on this euphoric energy boost that everyone talks about.

What does it feel like? How will I know it when I am having it? I just want to sleep a lot nowadays. Perhaps I am STILL in detox mode after 25 years of SAD, but I'm afraid on day 31 I'm going to have something warm, something cooked (might still be vegan though), and I'll have mentally (and socially) written raw off as a healthy lifestyle integration but not lifestyle change. (i.e. being 50-60% raw is much better than my previous 5% raw lifestyle)

Also has anyone experienced mental clarity? Someone once said it felt like having a "fog of brain" lifted, like having spicy food or hot soup for your sinuses, but that effect applied to your brain.

I have experienced neither of these two phenomena. I would love to hear your responses!

Tiredness is a VERY good indicator that the colon/body needs to REST to maximize its job. If you try to do the opposite, the process slows down.

OH yes, the energy and mental clarity feels like layers and layers have been lifted off.......you or at least I literally feel in alignment with the SUN.......I can actually be in a dark room with no windows and tell you when the SUN has broken thru the clouds --that' show sensitive I have become. There is not need to [find] something to stimualte you to feel good b/c you become the stimulating source.........it feels like being in a open wide room with sufficient light, air and space to breathe..........nothing can distract you --total awareness is mastered and it is CALM within......that's how I feel :)

Your energy and mental clarity sound very enlightening to hear, so I hope to feel that within a few days.

If I feel tired during the day, there's nothing I can do at work except rough it out. But on weekends, if I feel tired, you suggest I just sleep as much as possible?

How long did it take you from going SAD to feeling like you do now?

I was an omnivore back in February when I started my raw diet, so making a switch from lots of cooked food (with tons of meat and dairy and junk) to 100% raw vegan is a HUGE shift in my eating habits. My sister went from pescetarian to raw vegan which would be much easier I would imagine. How long do people with a full SAD meal plan take to start feeling these energy levels and mental clarity?

Mike, it really varies on each persons body and how well their eliminatory system responds.....

I would say YES....if you feel tired, rest---you'll be suprised at how much "rejuvenation" takes place with allowing your body to rest when it is asking for it.

What do you ususal eat?

Meat eaters inculding dairy etc....that is a more grand switch. Consdiering meat works the liver harder and diary builds the mucous against the intestinal walls........what you are feeling is not unusual --in fact, it is a great sign!!!

Do you get any solid blood flowing exercise ? Hydration? Bowels are consistent? Have you had any classic detox symptoms?

:)

mikeshafer
03-18-2007, 01:03 AM
The fact that I'm still losing about 0.8 lbs/day is VERY encouraging to me. Bowl movements are consistent (much smoother than before) and I feel like my body is still purging lots of waste from years and years. I'm afraid my diet just isn't supplying me with enough nutrients.

Typical day:
8:30 AM: smoothie (2 bananas, strawberries, blackberries)
11:30 AM: large salad with cucumbers, onions, carrots, raisins, cherry tomatoes
2:00 PM: fruit parfait (about 20 oz of sliced pineapple, watermelon, and grapes)
4:30 PM: larabar
7 PM: smoothie (bananas, strawberries, blue/black berries)
9 PM: if hungry, 1 whole cucumber with some salt

I drink around 4 liters of water per day, maybe more. My only detox symptoms are sleepiness, even I would say fatigue (I find myself walking around the office and my left leg feels weak momentarily). I've had sinus pressure/headaches for years, which I think is chronic frontal sinusitis, but I am hoping this raw diet cures me fully. So far, no luck.

I don't have a juicer, just a blender. Girlfriend won't let me buy a juicer since it takes up a lot of space in our 550 sq ft apartment. :P

IF you are eating to the point of being satisfied, that's great BUT it doesn't look like you eat enough.

Being nutrient deficient is not so much of what how much were eating but the root problem of our bodies not digesting, assimilating and absorbing effectively b/c of our prior eating habits. Can't absorb effectively thru intestines and blood if our bodies are toxic.

You can always concentrate the detox process by simple replacements like lemon water in the morning which is great to help draw mucous off the intestinal walls, cleanse the liver/kidneys.........lemon is aromatically a "lifter."

Green juices and greens period are LIVER/colon friendly so if you want to alkalize and balance, spreading some more greens out.

Water?

Exercise?

Mike, I know it feels frustrating but we've seen your type before....that energy zap will happen........it's like all of a sudden it happens and you can't time it. ;)

misslinda
03-18-2007, 01:20 AM
Personal view: Weakness in the legs is classic sign of someone with weak liver---meat eaters get this alot that I notice. Sinuses, blocked lymphatic system...........bounce bounce bounce. It will clear these issues......seriously!

:)

mikeshafer

I'll hold the line and hope that the energy zap occurs soon. I can understand that years of bad eating will take time to heal, but it's increasingly becoming difficult to be raw all the time.

maybe incorporate some avos/coconut or olives - personally I saty away from nuts since they don't do well with me --- but the other fats I couldn't live without. So yeah - I 'd say less sweet fruit, more greens, more good fat....and hey - GONGRATS ON THE WEIGHTLOSS.
You DO NOT need to worry about getting enought nutritions,..its funny how people who have been eting SAD for years never even thinking about nutrition, vitamines etc - start worrying when they go raw and eat the optimal diet----I did the same thing.
My detox took awhile - but now, dang! LOTs and lots of energy - I only sleep five - six hours /day and feel really rested when I wake up as supposed to before where I had to draaaag my ass out of bed:o

You are doing amazing!! Your body will thank you when it's finished cleansing .- and yes, it can take some time. be patient.

Maybe some greens in those smoothies would help? Kale or some such...

Missrawdiva

Where are your greens? I dont think.. no.. I KNOW your not getting enough greens! Try putting 2 cups of raw kale in your smoothies. The bananas will mask the taste of the kale!

mikeshafer

OK so more kale... that's it? I've mixed spinach and bananas with some raw honey that's pretty tasty.

I'm told kale is pretty disgusting (very bitter). I'm going to buy some today. What are some good blends with kale or other greens I can make? I don't have a juicer yet so I'm looking for anything I can throw in the blender.

So far I'm told kale + bananas. I've tried spinach + bananas + raw honey. What else would you recommend?

Mike, just add the kale to the fruit smoothies you are now making and/or to the salads you are eating. I'm having kale topped with red cabbage salad today for lunch - it is my current favorite. ~ Cathy

Mike, just wanted to let you know you're not alone. I'm currently on Day 26 of my 30-Day 100% raw challenge... So only 1 day ahead of you, and I'm still tired as well. I don't have the "raw energy" yet either, and I don't have mental clarity either. Yes I'm frustrated at times, but the only solution I see is to keep going until I get to experience both, LOL. I'm tired of being tired, and I just keep waiting for the "brain fog" to lift... Well, hopefully one day... ;)

I don't drink enough water, but I do eat a huge salad most days with lots of greens. It doesn't seem to be speeding anything up, but I do feel like my body needs the greens....

In my experience, it wasn't within the 30-day timeframe that I experienced the boost in energy. In fact, it was actually a couple of months or so down the line. So, while for some it occurs during the first 30 days of being raw, it's not the case for everyone. Another issue behind sluggishness and tiredness is a compacted bowel, which I had. I was severely constipated prior to going raw...with the aid of raw and doing enemas, I was able to get some relief from that. But even with JUST raw foods alone, the bowel-function does greatly improve. I know this from the times that I've gone back to cooked food during the 3 years I've been raw and each time, I would get all plugged up again but after going back to eating all raw foods, my bowels would begin to start working like a champ!

So, also look into how your bowel function is as well and just keep in mind that everyone is different and not everyone gets the energy boost during the same duration of time on raw foods.

As for describing HOW it occured and what it felt like: I just noticed one day that I firstly, wasn't feeling groggy upon awakening in the morning...I got up and felt really good and refreshed. I was sorta "zipping" around doing chores and it wasn't a "chore". I just felt good and I wasn't all tired and didn't need my usual daily nap. That's when I realized it was occuring...the energy increase I had always heard about.

Oh...and about kale being disgusting - I guess disgusting is in the mouth of the beholder. I use kale quite often in smoothies and it's not bitter at all. The only things I've ever put in my smoothies that was bitter was (believe it or not) romaine lettuce. For some reason, eating romaine is so mild, but when I blended it with the fruit, it made my smoothie bitter. Also, collard greens - not really BITTER, but kinda spicy/hot. Other than that, I've used kale, spinach, parsley, rainbow chard, collards (can actually tolerate those if I ONLY use a small amount) and even tried to use cilantro once but hated that as I don't like cilantro, but thought I could mask it with the fruit and learn to like it - no dice!

It sounds like your diet is pretty good to me, and adding greens would be a great addition to it.

There are lots of other factors, though, besides diet. Because we know that just being raw isn't the cure-all.

Look at other things in your life.

How much rest are you getting?

Are you getting outside in the fresh air?

Are you getting any sun?

How much physical activity are you getting in a day?

Are you happy, mentally and psychologically?

For me, I know I could be eating the purest way possible, but if I'm not getting enough physical acitivty I still feel sluggish. Or if I am not getting enough sleep at night, I don't feel like exercising. So everything in balance.

Are you a former caffeinated soda, coffee or tea drinker?

Sounds like adrenal fatigue:confused:

Definately get some nuts and Avocados in to support the immune system

Avoid toxins...PEOPLE INCLUDED

10 min Power naps or just deliberate daydreaming

DELIBERATELY EXERCISE DAILY 45 - 90 min

An avocado in that AM salad plus a handful of afternoon nuts ought to do the trick.

I like slices of apples, tangerine or orange wedges blended with my greens.

Wheat grass is also a great colon cleaner, and when I have 2-3 bowel movements daily I feel energized and on top of the world!

Meditation, prayer and/or daily affirmations!!!!:D

Cool, well I'm on day 26 now and I purchased a bunch of kale this morning, so I hope to integrate that into my daily smoothies today as well. I've accepted that this energy boost probably won't occur within 30 days, so I'm deciding whether to keep pushing myself afterward or start integrating more cooked foods back into my diet. We'll see how much more weight I drop in the next 4 days.

I have a question for you.

What was your energy levels like before?

I ask this because I've always been kind of tired/lethargic, and on raw, I didn't get any sudden bursts, but I did feel like I wasn't huffing and puffing going up the stairs on walking up inclines.

This may be more gradual for you, or there really may be a difference, but it's just not as noticeable or discerning to you as it is with others.

A good way to tell is if you did some kind of activity before, like weights or cycling or something, and now you can do it twice as much.

For instance I was reading a really, really inspiring journal where the first day she was running up and down her stairs 5 times on the first day (it was all she could do at that point), and then doing it 50 times a few weeks later. I thought that was pretty phenomenal in such a short time of being raw. but it was also a great way to measure her stamina and energy levels - if you e-mail me I can give you the link to it.

Maybe you can think about keeping a journal and documenting what you can do every day. You may find there is a big difference, although you don't feel it, you could see it when looking back on your journal.

I don't really feel like I can go to the gym anymore. I used to lift a lot of weights and exercise frequently, but since going raw I stopped completely. Partially I wanted to see how much weight I could lose without exercise, but also because I've felt weak doing workouts when raw. I've done a couple of cardio workouts but haven't touched the weights since going raw -- I doubt I could even lift the bar when bench pressing.

I still just feel lethargic during the day, always ready to go to sleep. This is how I was once a year ago when I was very depressed, but now I don't feel depressed--just tired.

I was hoping to wake up one morning at 6 AM full of energy and ready to take the day by storm, cleared of the "fog brain" people talk about. Nada yet. And now some people are saying I may have to wait another month or more? 6 months? Ouch--that's a long ways away if I'm living on a prayer here.

But hell, if a raw diet can cure my sinus headaches/sinusitis, or whatever this ailment is I've had for six years, I'd be happy to stay raw until then.

Hi Mike

I'm still getting days like that (I'm on day 28) - just no energy and feeling like I can't move very far for very long - drained. It's not every day, but at this stage it's still a lot. It's detox. At the beginning I had a lot of energy, but as I've been detoxing more it's been all over the place, up one day, down the next. It's different for everyone. Hang in there is all I can tell you - I'd been cleansing quite heavily for over a year and I'm still having detox, so what you're experiencing sounds just about right. Takes awhile, unfortunately :P

Hope you feel better soon :)

Yeah, I'm still sluggish after a couple/few ? weeks Raw. And that was after many months of high Raw. Nevermind that was punctuated with eating junk food! Then I was eating very high Raw, and I can vouch for what Alissa says, well, now I forget what the quote is, something like the difference between eating 95% Raw and 100% Raw is the difference between night and day. No kidding! but I slowly feel better with episodes of desperately needing a nap. I'm a 34-year-old woman who has to occasionally pull my truck over to the side of the road and take a mini-nap. Good Lord! Don't worry, I'm in a little safe town in Oregon. But I have faith that if I see this out, I'll feel tremendously better. Meanwhile, to give myself more energy, I might want to try not overeating Raw food.....and I realized I transferred most of my exercise indoors after joining the gym, so I'm conscious of walking my dog out in the sunshine now. So, welcome to the lethargic, dull-witted Raw optimistics club.

Woh... this is less than encouraging. It's really interesting to find so many people who experience huge energy gains after 3 weeks, and then there are people here posting who have to wait MONTHS before feeling these benefits. This is disappointing and I wish my body would catch up. I may have to give up 100% raw after 30 days because I cannot at this point sustain this lifestyle. It's great having more raw foods in my diet, but these alleged health benefits just seem to be like a dream now and not a reality. We shall see...

Let's keep in mind that it is winter time when our bodies are in hibernation conservative mode also and Spring is a few days aways and we will experience a major shift again. of feling more vibrant!

Granted, there are alot of folks here with years and decades of health issues and whenever we take the natural approach, we are going thru the process of reversing many years of torment......it may seem like it's not happening fat enough but imagine the inside of your body and what all it needs to do to digest daily, detoxify old and new toxins, eliminate, process, assimialte, abosrb etc..........that's a HUGE workload......

I would suggest getting blood pumping walk in the morning---stimualte your lymphatic system...you don't have to lift weights or do a 10 mile run but assist your lymph system.

Mike, would you like to join us in a short fast like 3-4 days? I guarnatee you gain some "rejuvenation!" Are you up for it? YOu don't even need a juicer to do it..........;)

I understand it's years of torment on my body and I'm asking for a lot in 30 days, but I have to be realistic. Everyone talks about this euphoric energy boost that just doesn't seem to come, and rather I feel tired all the time. Today I was completely exhausted and I am as I type this. Maybe when I become self-employed for the first time I will take a couple months off and go on a raw diet somewhere in a meditation retreat. Who knows. It's just so hard to be 100% raw when everyone around me is omnivorous.

3-4 days of fasting? I could try it... what is the point of the fast, just more cleansing? What could I make? If I could do it only with a blender, I'm in. I am not a big fan of juice fasts as I feel even more tired than before.

When are you starting your fast?

I made my gf some mac & cheese today. It smelled SOOOOOO good. 4 more days on the raw diet. Maybe I'll extend it a few days for a fast.

I have found that blending banana, pear, and kale is a great combination! It tastes so sweet! You can start out with even 2 pears, and just a little bit of kale...then you can add more kale and other dark leafy greens as you feel comfortable with the taste. My taste buds have even changed and now sometimes the pear is too sweet!

Stick with it! :)

Mike, they say 1 year raw to detox every decade SAD. Then there are those like myself that have had many meds, many surgeries and other things like polluted air. I am just sick all the time. But I will get there or die first.

You have to get a juicer. Do straight greens and straight lemon. Do easier to tolerate greens like spinach, cilantro, parsley, lettuces, chard. You will get an energy boost if that is all that you ingest (along with some water.)

Mike, I don't know how long you have been doing this or how old you are but it does not sound like you have even had enough detox yet. Don't quit before the miracle happens!

Personally I never could make a good smoothie. They were all yech for the most part. Green juice works better than coffee for me. All non-cretinous vegetables for me. Mostly I juice cilantro and spinach and parsley. I might add some lemon juice to the cilantro. Sometimes I make a salsa juice with some tomato and onion added to the cilantro. I suppose I could put it in a blender with an avocado and have a salsa smoothie. Cilantro is good for detox and parsley is good for blood purification (detox). I only drink them right after they are made. They turn quick. Any fruit can wear me down - make me tired.

Also you can do juice fasts on the weekends - well I do when I am going to be around the house. I get more done. I have a juicer that I bought off a hippie for $20 almost 30 years ago. My husband bought me a cheapie at Walmart also. Some local people have been reading my suggestion from a few months ago because on my local Freecycle site I see people asking for raw equipment like juicers and dehydrators! Maybe if you got one free that way your girlfriend would be a little more tolerant and relaxed about it?

Greens and lemon juice all weekend. See if it gives you energy.

Mmmm.. . . I know too much kale will have me running all right - to the bathroom. No doubt it is good stuff but personally I would go very slow with it.

Your sinusitis - it will go. I can almost guarantee it. Mine was from cheese and wheat. Its mostly gone except for the cat my family insisted on giving a home to but I am hoping to even detox my allergy to cat dander! Can this be done everybody? Anybody? Can I detox a cat?

I do want to claim it... but I just don't know how much further I have to go before I realize any more benefits of the raw diet. I'm on day 28 right now and my weight has stabilized around 187-188 (down from 212 on day 0). I had bad headaches yesterday, my urine smells really bad, and my breath is permanently bad now -- all detox signs, yes, but how long does detox last? I can't stay 100% raw for a year right now, it just isn't an option for me.

I'll try to extend my raw diet a few more days, maybe another week. Currently, sinusitis is still there, energy is still very low, and brain fog hasn't gone away (I think the brain fog is directly connected to sinusitis). If my body would just hint that it's going to fix it, I would happily stay raw. No signs yet other than the weight loss...

luckitri: what did your sinusitis feel like? I've had what might be considered sinusitis for 6 years now. I thought I was just really depressed but my symptoms match those of chronic sinusitis: pressure on my forehead, sore sinus cavities next to my nose, perpetual dry cough. Feels like I'm stoned sometimes, or just zonked out and can't really live "in the moment" as a result. It's terrible living this life. Raw food is my last ditch effort. :(

Yes that is it. I felt that it compromised my function as well. Any negative stimulus and I would blow up into a raging worst stage sinus infection within hours. Unfortunately mine went away because I had to live on steroids for a few years - not due to raw.

In a perverse way the sinus condition coming back after years on steroids is telling me that my own natural immune system is coming back? So I am beginning to battle it again but not as bad as before. I do think that raw will heal it but it will take time. There's bugs living in there in your sinus which has been proven. I forget the name of them. I think of it kind of like the Candidas yeast. Patience and persistance.

If my body would just hint that it's going to fix it, I would happily stay raw. No signs yet other than the weight loss...

Boy, you are at a HIGH level of excreting toxins and you want to throw in the towel all b/c of your not sure if you can do it? Do you understimate yourself quite a bit?

Here the thing, when you are displaying detox, the worst thing you can do, is back up even more....in other words, if you go back to yourold way of eating, you will be hurting your "system" even more. Toxins are loose right now, dont push them back in your tissue and bloodstream when its HOT!

THINK and DO in terms of ASSISTING your detox........there are so many things...

fasting a few days
deep breathing every moring and every nite
force yourself to walk in the early morning or do the infamous Revvell Qi gong!!
massage
detox bath
yoga
Hebal sun teas that assit in detox
visualize
aromatherapy

those are a few...........

sinunitis that is definately related to your lymphtaic sytem......try tangerine juice not oranges............eucalyptus oil steam to lubricate the bronchial tubes and sinus cavities.........mstard seed powder bath and oil offers deep stimualtion in the body, draws out toxins and stimualte mucous.........

Be your best problem solver!!!!!!!!!!

I had bad headaches yesterday, my urine smells really bad, and my breath is permanently bad now -- all detox signs, yes, but how long does detox last? I can't stay 100% raw for a year right now, it just isn't an option for me.Why's that?
