I have a Salter 2006, which weighs 2 kg / 1 g, and an Acculab, which weighs 400 g / 0.1 g. The Salter's battery (two Li cells) is dying after maybe three years. I'm going to get a new battery of course, but it has a couple of problems and I'm thinking of getting a new scale. My salad box is big enough to cover the display, and when I remove enough mass that it would display a negative number, it retares itself. What do you use or recommend?

A scale for you or your food?

I don't weigh my food often but if I run across a recipe where I need to i guess I will pull out my pampered chef food scale...
Hmmm oughta put that on craigslist next week too.

I'd recommend the Ultra Ship for your food. It has a detachable face plate that will help you read the weight.
I got mine on e-bay. There are various models, I have the 50 pound one.
I have the same scale. I use it to ship packages. Is this to weigh food? Any reason why? (I'm probably really ignorant... I've never heard of weighing food)

i'm curious as to why you want to weigh your food as well? Why not just eat and be free? :D They don't have scales in the wild ;)

I've noticed that a lot of recipes from UK sites use weight (grams) instead of volume (cups) like we do in North America, I'd guess that's why Pierre uses a kitchen scale more often...

The first thing I did when I got my Vita-Mix was weigh the pitcher; it's 820 grams. So I make sure that it reads at least 1220 when I make a smoothie. For salads, the gross should be at least 768 g (the tare is about 128 g, so that's 640 g net). (Sometimes I think in binary, even in metric. Usually that's when programming delays in a computer - I get numbers like 209.7152 ms. But it spills over.)
Actually they do have scales in the wild. They also have fins.:p
I find quantities like "a cup of basil" or "a cup of tomatoes" completely absurd. Am I supposed to immerse the tomatoes archimedically in a big beaker of water to see how much they displace?
I am in North America; the USA went metric in 1975, though I already knew the metric system because my father came from France. For more about why one should write recipes in grams, see http://www.metricationmatters.com/articles.html .

Good Thread,
Pierre, I’m having the same problem as you trying to read a tiny readout under an enormous bowl of lettuce. I’m counting calories because losing weight is a priority for me and trying to figure out the number of calories in a cup/bunch/stalk/clove/medium sized this or that is ridiculous.
Sharon,
Your suggestion about the Ultra Ship was very good. The one with the read out that pulls away from the scale should meet my needs very well. It’s going on my wish list for next month. I’ve already spent my mad money for March.

I've never used it for food before, but I was thinking about the detachable faceplate that would be helpful to Pierre is he had to put a big box of lettuce on it or something. That detachable faceplat came in handy when I was weighing my huge colonet (home colonic machine) that I sold on e-bay!
Like LifeaGift I use a Pampered Chef scale in my kitchen. Got a lot of PC stuff from my kitchen consultant days.
Pierre, I never thought about cup measuring vs. weight measuring. That is interesting, although I eyeball a lot of stuff when I follow recipes.
Your right Sharon, the face plate that detaches is a great idea for big boxes (that's why I got it... AND I love it). If you check on eBay you can find them really cheap, I believe they are under $20 and I got mine in about 2 days. It doesn't come with an adapter though so unless you will be using batteries you have to buy a separate adapter, thankfully I already had a universal one that I use.
