View Full Version : Can too much fruit cause constipation?

Okay, I'm on a juice/smoothie fast right now, but no one really hangs out in that area, so I thought I would get replies here.......anyway, I've been eating pretty much mono fruit for the past 3 days and yesterday and today I'm fasting on blended fruit and fresh fruit and veggie juices.....my question is, could this be a detox thing? Cramping, constipation, worse bloating than before.......or could this be due to what I'm putting in my body now? Nothing is working for me it seems. It just keeps getting worse and worse. I mean, although I really don't want to, I was thinking about eating rice just to settle my stomach down.......I really don't want to though. If feel like I've already come kind of far and had major detox that I don't want to go through again......also....does anyone know why it seems like I'm going through all this detox when I didn't consider myself THAT unhealthy before this?.....I mean, yeah, I had ongoing problems, but nothing severe where they could find a diagnosis (besides interstitial cystitis).....and then there are people who have tons of other problems, but they are not complaining about all of this messiness (or maybe I'm just a complainer? I'm really not though, but this is just 32 days of uncomfortableness) I can't stop thinking about how maybe eating too much raw isn't good for me for some reason, like my body just can't handle it, but I don't want to be someone who has some cooked food in my diet, and high raw....I don't feel right doing that..........Oh and one more thing is that I feel kind of stuck......if I eat too much fat, or any amount of nuts, I feel like complete crap the next day.....but if I stick to high fruit, I feel better overall, (more energy, no bags under eyes, not as crabby, no more yeast outbreak), but then I have lots of tummy issues......I feel like I just can't win. Does anyone have any suggestions? (And I'm really not up for a complete water fast......I feel like my life is way to hectic right now to put that on myself.....school, work, planning a wedding, on top of regular every day chores....
p.s. I'm sorry, I know I'm complaining A LOT on this board......I don't see ANYONE complaining as much as me......but I'm just really uncomfortable, ALL THE TIME!

How is your yeast/candida doing?
Are you working out at all?
I always give anything symptomatic 3 to 7 days to work itself out before becoming concerned. There's a lot of detox going on in your body right now, so you shouldn't worry.
Don't worry, be happy.

Thanks Sharon....
the yeast is pretty much gone since I took the nuts (fat?) out of my diet....I never would have thought that the nuts could be my culprit....I'm not working out at all, I don't have time. I'm on my lunch break right now...I go from school to work all day back to school. I do live in NY so I walk everywhere, but when it's cold out I make the shortest trips possible...
So you think this could all still be detox? I totally thought I would have had some kind of sign by now....

Maybe water and some good stretching excercises. Massage your colon at night when you're lying there. Give yourself at least 20-30 minutes of some kind of activity. There's no excuse for this, especially when you are spending that same amount of time on message boards.
Keep us posted!

Your questions seem valid. If this is what your experiencing that then that's what it is. It is good to evaluate how you are feeling so you can find what works for you. We are like scientists studying food and how it affects our body.
There could be several factors:
I know when I started the green smoothies I had gas but I believe it was a result of moving toxic debri out. When you juice obviously don't have the fiber so that's part of it. Apples can be helpful. Also make sure your drinking enough water. You also might consider adding more greens. I personally like Kale. I juice it and also add at least 4 leaves to my smoothie. Check out, "Greens for Life", by Victoria Boutenko. It is a very informative on the importance of greens.

Hi there,
A couple of things come to mind...
Are you "chewing" your juices and smoothies? Lots of people gulp down smoothies and juices and when you do that you are skipping an important part of the digestive process. Be sure to keep each mouthful of liquid in your mouth for several seconds and swish it around to thoroughly mix it up with saliva, with has digestive enzymes in it.
Also, try simplifying things for a while until your digestion settles down. Don't mix lots of different ingredients. If you are using greens in your smoothies be sure you aren't using tougher greens. Stick to very tender greens like romaine, green leaf and red leaf.
It also could just be your body adjusting... it may resolve by itself soon.
I'm glad your candida got better!
Don't worry, you are on the right track.. be persistent and you will get to where you want to be. Remember that you have been "abusing" your body with the wrong foods for decades, you can't expect vibrant, glowing health in a few weeks! :-)
Wishing you all the best,
Audrey

Doesn't your digestive tract basically stop when you're fasting? Not that much going in -> not that much coming out.

that's what I thought......but there was fiber in the smoothies, just blended REALLY well......
Thanks for all your replies.......I don't mean to be such a bug.
But of course I have another question: (I don't want to start another whiny thread)...so, I've noticed these teeny tiny little warts on one of my hands. Right now I have two. Very very little, looks like a 'nick' healing from far away, or nothing at all. Anyway, I've noticed that I get one, and then it goes away, on it's own....then another two, and they start going away....I've had these before but they usually just get bigger until I have to kill them myself. And they are dissappearing within a week or so.....but they also didn't start coming out until I went raw, a month ago. Can this be die off of candida? I hope so......I really hope so.....

I have several books on fasting that recommend enemas or colonics during a fast because you really can become constipated. Even though you aren't putting solids in your body, it is still creating waste from metabolizing and general housecleaning activities. The bulk isn't there to help create a good BM, so you have to help it along. Lot's of water is good too. Is this TMI? Sorry, I spend lots of time trying to find ways to clean the junk out of my body that I have put there. LOL

Well, I did go today, twice, but they were strained and it didn't feel like everything was coming out (sorry). I was going to do an enema later, but I just ate a salad....so so much for fasting right now.....
But okay, now I spoke too soon. I just went to the bathroom and the yeast was kind of back, and the big 'clots' of mucousy pinky orange stuff came with it..... Like the size of pennies.......I've had this before, but it's usually after drinking alcohol and it's not usually that much! I felt like I was having my 'monthly friend' but it's not bright red...and it's full of mucus...it's not blood. My Mom said she used to get this and her doctor told her it was the inside of her uterus lining, or bladder lining or something....? I really hope this is detox because it's kind of scary. Things really just keep getting worse.!

It could be that you are ovulating right now? Are you mid-cycle?
I'm sorry, I'm having similar digestive issues. I just seem to have a slow transit time, very sluggish. I hope I'll be able to speed things up somehow!

It sounds like major detox. Maybe your body is cleaning out a bit too quickly for comfort.
As far as the BM's go, if you have to strain, you're constipated. Just having a movement doesn't mean that everything is coming out (as you said, you didn't feel like it was).
I think candida is very stubborn. I don't know if it's ok to discuss other books on this forum, but I have a book by Gabriel Cousens called "Rainbow green Live Food Cuisine", and he talks extensively about candida and how difficult it is to get rid of a chronic case. If you are eating lots of fruits, it's going to be nearly impossible to get rid of candida, because it thrives on any kind of sugar.

Hey RawNYC,
Cleansing is a very unique process and I think it's good to be in touch with your body as you go along with it. If it felt time to slow down and eat a salad, that is fine.
I personally feel constipated if I eat a lot of sweet fruits. Green smoothies just made me feel uncomfortable and unpleasant. I was really into them for a while, but then something shifted and they didn't feel good anymore. So now if I want blended greens I blend up a salad or a green soup. If you're going to do a high fruit diet, you need to exercise. I know that everyone needs to, but if you're eating mostly fruit it is essential.
From reading your posts though, I would make only one suggestion. When you think or say anything about your health, make it positive, frame it around, "Things just keep getting better and better!"
What you say and think creates how you feel.
Hope you're feeling better :)

Sleek, no, this only happens when I drink alcohol actually.......and I obviously haven't had any......and it's so different from having your period.....
I know that I've read that sugar is the main culprit, but on here I've read some people say that it was fat. For some reason, I think it's the fat, or at least nuts, because when I went to get food from a gourmet raw resturant, filled with nuts, the next morning I woke up and had a HORRIBLE yeast infection. Now, I've been eating mostly fruit, and the itching is completely gone, the yeast was gradually clearning up since Monday or so. Today, it's very very little, and I only saw it when that weird mucus came out. (It was VERY little, like two little dots. I know gross....sorry).
Anyway, I'm going to stop thinking about it. I'm just going to eat raw and stop concentrating on it......I'm giving up......not giving up raw or hope, but giving up guessing.

I think this is a great idea!! Your body might do some weird things for the next few months/years while you detox and heal, there is no need to stress yourself out and obsess over every little symptom. Trust the process, trust your body. Listen to your intuition and use your common sense.
You will do great!!!
All the best,

That's very interesting. I had never heard about the possibility of fat being the culprit for causing candida. Worth checking into.
Also, just so you know, I don't think anything to do with the human body is gross! LOL Some people do, so I guess out of consideration, I usually don't talk about bodily functions, but it's an essential function and closely linked to our health. So, if you have questions about it, you should put them out there. Don't be shy (it doesn't seem like you are)!
Have a great day and know that you are doing something great for yourself!

I'd love to have you make a list of what you eat and drink every day for a few days.. every single bite... and see what is going into your body?
Have you ever done a food diary?

I've done a food diary before......it helped somewhat, but not enough to keep up with it. I changed foods too often to know.....
For an example, yesterday I had a pineapple smoothie, just pineapples water and ice, then a little later I had a mango smoothie, same recipe, then I had a juice of carrots, celery and apple, then I got home and had a watermelon smoothie, and like an hour later another pinapple smoothie.
The couple days before that I was doing mono fruit. Main fruit I eat are watermelon, pineapple, cantaloup, honeydue, bananas, grapes....actually, all different kinds.......today I just had a melon smoothie, then a pineapple one, and then a salad with lettuce (romaine), tomatoes, onions, carrots, mushrooms and cucumber.......those are the past few days. Oh, and one night I had an avocado because my cravings wouldn't shut up.
See, nothing really significant......and I'm hungry thinking about all of this and driving myself insane thinking about it. AHHHHHHHH BREAAAAAAAAAAAAAATHHHEEEE! :D ;)
So no one needs to reply anymore hahaha cos I'm just going to do my work like I'm supposed to be doing right now (hehe) and let my mind rest of this all for a while. Thanks for all of your concern though! :D
And Darkchild, I don't really get embarrased about these things either. I'm so used to talking about it, plus I'm a pretty open person in general. But I feel like I have to say sorry to the people that get grossed out easily! hahaha thanks for letting me know you aren't one of them! Now I'll be telling you everything!!!! haha

I like the direct and honest approach personally so I don't have to shift through my mind of wondering the other facts. I know just me seeing the sight of something who has fainted is very graphic or even seeing someone bleed out of control turns my stomach.
At least here we can help find solutions by being upfront. I know everyone's tolerance is different, and I respect that, but it helps to know all the facts to help out. Maybe we can come to a quicker resolution with it all here.
Please don't judge this as putting down anyone, but sharing only my thoughts.

I got really constipated when I first started eating fruit smoothies in the morning and fruit for snacks. I couldn't "go" for at least 4 days! It sounds funny but I took psyllium husks (even more fiber) to really push it through and I did an enema to help it along. These two things worked. I think for me, it might have been detox. I had already been a vegetarian for about nine months, but my body must have gone into shock from all the fruit fiber at once. Hang in there, this too will pass :)

Thanks for sharing your experience. I love reading that someone went through what I did and got over it. That's the best!
And yeah, I like up front and honest, doesn't bother me either. I wanted to be a nurse until all of this stuff started happening to me and I realized the medical world is not what it looks like from the outside (going to like 35 doctors was enough for me in 2 years!) ......now I'm studying psychology....still medical but at least they can admit and understand that things goes beyond symptoms....way beyond. I'm thinking of getting my masters in health psychology in a couple years. It's all connected!

Maybe it's where I grew up that makes me like "direct and honest" but some people are harsh as they do say it that way. Therefore it's best to be sensitive to how the words come out. I want to tell the truth but say it in a loving way is always my goal. Former NYer myself so I suppose my roots are still there.
Regardless feel well everyone.

I think it's possible to be both loving and direct. There is no reason to be rude or harsh. But, it is faster and easier to get to the root of a problem with direct questions and answers (imho). ;)

Bananas can be constipating. Are you putting those in your smoothies? If so that could be the cause.

By your overall description of detox symptoms, it sounds like some scrubbing of your system is taking place....especially when you have bloating etc followed with htese lil bumps or nicks as you desrcribed on your fingers. Keep in mind that detox is thru elimination or skin (which is the largest detox organ).
You may have "thought" you were relatively healthy b/c it takes times to develop condition ususally.........but when you take the natural approach of healing, you start to experience every aspect/process of the healing. Were so used to masking our symptoms that thru raw, we work thru them and our senses of bodliy change become heightened and fixated.
That's even a better sign that you are excreting mucous! You will find that the more mucous you release, you will have the channels of your body opening up more.....one thing about your "condition," it is one of "inflammation" and considered to be an "auto immune" issue as well. You will find that when you heal your stomach lining, restore the stomach terrain, you will eliminate easier.
It's a great thing you are doing smoothies to get some greens to aid your stomach terrain! I would even suggest good ole lemon water if that does not irritate you. The lemon juice is very cleaninsg to the liver/kidneys,aids in reparing lining tissue, anti viral, anti bac, astringent qualitites and alkalizing.
:)
Are you getting good blood pumping exercise?

WOW! I love the way you explain all of this.....it does make sense. Usually these pinkish-mucus symptoms turn into a horrible yeast infection, but this time it was the other way around.....now both the yeast and the mucos are completely gone (as far as I can tell)........not to say either one won't come back, but I think that's a huge sign it's all detox. I'm having other weird symptoms now, but hhaha oh well.......I KNOW it's detox........especially since I'm completely speading it up now with all fruit, some veggies and greens, no fat. And yes, I was just going to get some water with lemon in it......it usually hurts my bladder but I'm going to take that as cleansing signs..........I just can't believe the yeast infection is gone!!!! And with no meds.......................................BUT OF COURSE!

Hooray, that is excellent RawNYC !!!!!
There's so many other ways you can also assist your body with cleansing too if ingesting some foods/juices is painful----if lemon juice is ususally painful, take in moderation.....anyhow, aromatherapy using oils such as lemon, grapefruit etc are cleansing. You can do a detox bath with salts and oils as well.
**This is only a pesonal thought but I would even add some bitter types of foods in your smoothie like dandelion leaves, spinach, kale and watercress to remove some of the "heat" indication and offset dampness to that terrain.
Keep us updated --your doing FABULOUS :)

Hi Misslinda,
So how do you do these baths? I always hear about them.....I would love to do that tonight because I just finished my midterms and I need something relaxing....aromatherapy and a bath sounds relaxing...especially if it helps with the detox....... And yeah, I'm going to start adding greens in my smoothies again.
I was never on antibiotics for yeast infections....I used to go on antibiotics for UTI's, but never longer than a week at a time....but I used to use the over the counter monistat and some OTC homeopathic one that never seemed to work in the first place......and then the monistat stopped working for me......
Also, I know I need to start working out.....but the weather has been so crappy....well a couple of days this week were nice but I was running from work to school to work to school....today it's back to freezing rain and snow....and I don't have a direct enough schedule to get a gym membership right now.....but as soon as the weather changes for good, I'll be walking everywhere, no subway. From work to home -30 minutes right there....it's not hard to get more than enough exercise in NYC when it's nice out. Right now, it's to the subway, (down the block), from subway to work, from work to school, from school to subway, etc.

Dr Singha's is FABULOUS!! It's his infamous mustard seed poweder bath with various oils in it.....
You can also use 2 cups of epsom salts with few drops of oils that are soothing like rosemary, lavendar, lemon, pine, cedar ( not all thos together)......it's going to have to be what appeals to your senses to make it enjoyable and theraputic. Rose is ideal for "feminine" issues and balancing the femmie organs.....
The chronic use of antibiotics is definatley something we all know that destroys the good bateria in our stomach......it's not unsual to develop and be having other chronic issues along side. The immune system is weakened thru the use of them and once the stomach strengthens, you will notice your immunity becoming stronger and able to fight off the other symptoms.....
As kidneys cleanse and tonify, the femmie organs/hormones, balance out.
If any type of exercise since you are limited, simple bouncing to stimulate your lymphatic system is crucial. deep breathing into your "stagnant" areas of your abdomen helps bring blood flow into that area........visualization of your total healing~~:)
