asparagus ??

My son's science book says, "Asparagus is a delicious vegetable, but never eat it raw, and never eat its berries."
I found this in a section of his book entitled, "Edible plants that have poisonous parts"
I thought I COULD eat asparagus, and I know the people who are experts sometimes don't really know, so what's the truth about this plant. I've never eaten it raw, but I have enjoyed it cooked, and was looking forward to eating it raw this spring.

hmmm i recently purchased some from the reduced produce rack just to try it...and I really liked it. I ate like 5 cup fulls of it at once..
I hope it isn't poisonous!

I eat it all the time...tastes better raw than it does cooked. Don't worry about it.

I eat raw asparagus and even have a juice recipie that calls for asparagus. I like it steamed but I like it raw in my salads. Eat to much and your pee pee could small a little off but other than that it is great.

tvillemom, I just take the spears out of the fridge, wash em off, break off the woody ends and eat away. Soooo good.

Its just different, something we are not used to eating RAW. Its weird at first, then its like ok this isn't going to kill me. I bought a bunch of asparagus the other day and ate um all up. I don't think they will hurt you.;)

I love raw asparagus. I eat it when it's fresh.

I am careful though, because there's something in it that can aggravate gout if you have it, but I don't think it matters if it's cooked or raw.

Anyway.. did they reference WHY?

I'd just eat it. It's good.

lemon asparagus

you'll need:

aspragus
3 tbsp lemon juice
1/4 c olive oil
bit of black pepper
pinch celtic sea salt

use a mandoline and shave the asparagus into long strips. in a bowl, toss aparagus with the lemon juice, olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste. you can let it marinate for a while or eat it right up.

serve neatly on a plate with lemon garnish.

it's very simple, raw and yummy! :)
