I made my first batch yesterday to give it a go and they came out more leathery and not crispy. so i thought i didn't leave them in long enough, but they were still leathery after two more hours in the dehydrator. i cut them about 1/4 inch thick and i left the skin on. initially, they were in there for about 10 hours.

I've found that if you slice them with the spiral slicer or mandelon (sp?) BUT put them on the teflex/fruit roll tray, then they don't wither away as much as if they're directly on the mesh and they come out crisp and crunchy. But you could still enjoy the leathery ones...just tell yourself it's a kind of "jerky" :p

If you leave them in there longer, they will get crispy.

oh THANK you ladies. I had given up on these, because they withered away to like nothing and stuck to the trays and didnt get crunchy.

I shall try them on the fruit leather tray Rawkinlocs and leave them in longer Allison. Yah!! excited.

Do you know about how long? I left them in there at first for about 10 hours. and then i put them back in for another two. THey've been out of the deydrator for about one day. Should i put them back in there for longer??

Maybe 24 hours. I don't use the trays, either, because it always seems to take longer that way. I cut them by hand, too, because when I use the processor, they get WAY too thin, and then there's nothing left when they are dry.

I just made my first batch of zucchini chips. Used a food processor. Added some celtic salt then dehydrated them for 16 hours. They are much too thin, thinner then paper cant even get them off the trays without them just falling apart. So, how thick are they to be sliced so that they don't turn out like paper?

thank-you.

I've made these a couple of times. Great for sneaking into the movie theater! Sometimes, they turn out crispy and yummy, other times leathery. I can't, for the life of me, figure out what I did differently. Maybe soaking time? I'll try using the Teflex instead of the screens. Any other tips for ensuring cripiness?

I sliced my chips in the food processor (Maybe pushing down on the zucchini makes the slices thicker? They weren't too thin.) Then soaked in a solution of Braggs and water for about 20 minutes. Laid them out and sprinkled brewer's yeast on top (if you stack the trays while you sprinkle, you catch extra sprinkles that fall between the mesh.)

Next time, I'm going to skip the Braggs and try sprinkling with Shazzie's "parmesean" mixture: Walnuts pulse-chopped to crumbles, mixed with Brewer's Yeast and salt.

Ok...I would love to try these as an alternative to potato chips. Does anybody know the trick? Do I soak them first? I think I will soak them, and them salt them and put them on a tray for about a day. Any suggestions?

i am trying zucchini chips this weekend...can someone pls tell me exactly how to do them so they come out nice and crispy...how thick do you slice them?...by hand or by machine?...do you soak overnight in salt water?...do you dehydrate on the trays or directly on the mesh?....

I have not tried making chips yet, but from what I can interpret from this thread, and others I've seen is:

- marinate 30 mins - 1 hour, I wouldn't do more
- Alissa's book says put on the mesh tray, but others seem to have better luck on teflex.
- not sure about thickness, but thin is not good.
