View Full Version : Raw pumpkin - what does it taste like?

I've never actually had pumpkin raw before, I've been a bit hesitant as I thought it'd be floury like potato.

I've see the delicious pumpkin soup recipe and have decided I'd like to try it, but I don't want to go and waste a pumpkin if it does have a floury taste!

So for those who do eat raw pumpkin (and you crazy Americans seem to love your pumpkin pie!) what does is taste like, is it floury?, does it get creamy in texture when you blend it (the photos seem to indicate this)?

Thanks for any info.

mmmmmmmmmmm pumpkin... I am a HOUND for pumpkin. When not raw, I LOVED pumpkin pie. When just Vegan, I still loved it!! I've yet to make a raw pumpkin pie ^_^

Here in Canada, we can grow pumpkins very well. The climate is great for it. Depending on where you are, you probably can too.

Different types of pumpkin taste different, but have the same foundation. There is nothing floury about it. Very rich taste. Have you tasted a raw squash? Tastes something like that, but more... pumpkinny. ;) Sweet, earthy taste, and yes gets creamy when blended.

They're in the same family as squash. They act very similar in recipes :)

I made Alissa's pumpkin pie a month or so ago, and it tasted really good, not floury at all. I doubled the spices, too.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback!

I think I WILL try that soup, I'll start with a small pumpkin though, I'd hate to waste it! I might even try dehydrating some thinly sliced marinated pieces.

Not sure if I'd like pumpkin pie, it's not something that's regularly eaten in Australia.

I bought 1 small pumpkin, and could not get the skin off. I was afraid I was going to cut my hand off, so I had to toss it. Any tips for this. Also, when I bought a butternut squash, and made a "pumpkin pie" (Alissa's recipe) with it, it tasted grainy to me. What's the secret??? I LOVE PUMPKIN PIE....I LOVE THE FLAVOR! I REALLY WANT A PUMPKIN PIE, SOUP, ETC. HELP!!

This afternoon, I ate raw pumpkin juice, and I did not feel good about an hour later for about half an hour. I wonder if this kind of pumpkin that I ate is not suitable to be eaten rawly or actually no pumpkin can be eaten rawly. The pumpkin I ate has some green color and it is very small, a little bigger than a big pear.

When you buy pumpkin.. the best to eat are called "Pie Pumpkins"
They are small like the size of a cantaloupe. I personally wouldn't eat it raw straight out from a bowl or the pumpkin it's self for that matter LMAO :p But mixed well with other things and adding some pumpkin pie spices it tastes great. :)

I think those are decorative only and not meant to eat, like a gourd.
