Im curious to know what your detox symptoms are or were when going raw and making drastic changes to your diet.
im on week #4 of no coffee and trying to rebuild my adrenal glands from severe exhaustion and fatigue.
I also just started juicing on Monday in addition to a green smoothie everyday.
Today Ive been sneezing and sniffling ever since i left the house for the past 3 hours. i dont know if i have flukes or if its just a reaction to something.
Im not feeling as vibrant as I felt yesterday.
this sucks because i have a phone interview and i need all the mental focus i can get!
small headache too.

I could fall asleep at a moments notice (2-3 weeks 90% RAW). I sleep 8 hrs a night and easily 10-12 on weekends...but I feel great when I'm awake..lots of positive energy :o

I'm on day 7 of 100% raw and I do notice less energy.. probably over the last two days. I also have a sort of canker sore on my left lower lip..it's very small and unnoticable really, but I feel it occasionally if I lick my lip and it's sore.
I also am really interested to hear what other detox symptoms everyone has had or is having right now.. it's so interesting to see how it's different for each of us and unique to our own individual bodies and health level!

week #4 raw completely for me. I am still not having much for detox symtoms. I too had extreme fatigue/depression, my tiredness is getting less and less. I could have slept 24/7 before:(. I am loving that I am NOT hungry at all now. I juice citrus in the morning and veggies at lunch and eat avocado on flaxseed crackers with salad and I am FULL ! I am needing less and less, this is a good sign my body is absorbing what it needs. BUT weightloss has been slow but I am committed to stay for life ! I know in a year I will be more than happy with the end results !

Cankers are GOOD signs but painfull. Teatree oil and water for a mouth rinse might help you.:)

just curious.. why are they good? I mean, besides the fact that i'm detoxing and getting rid of toxins? if there is a reason beyond that. haha.
When I first went raw I was also tired a lot. I had some sores on my mouth at either side that kind of burned. My tears also burned for a while. When I got really tired and yawned, tears would fill my eyes and WHOA did they burn & hurt. Thankfully this only lasted a few days.

Oh man, how long have you got! I think I am the toxic queen and because I have eczema as well I do flare up a lot of the time. As soon as I started RAW in January I noticed in the first couple of days my wrists which were totally lined and darkened due to years of cortisones suddenly turned lighter....I couldn't believe it! I could actually see my normal skin! Having said that my detox symptoms last week were terrible fatigue. I slept for hours a day for about a week and a half. Around my period is the only time my skin flares up.
My anger only lasted for about 2 weeks or so where I was terribly emotional. Thank goodness, I think that has passed now...:o

I'm on day 10 raw and I notice:
:( :
-sores in my mouth
-horrible breakout/acne on my face
-fatigue on days 2-4
-irregular #2 (sometimes constipated, sometimes diarrehea)
:) :
-more restful sleep
-steady high positive energy throughout the day since day 8

Ah yes, you just reminded me of the more than frequent bowel movements. Its been more diarrehea than anything else. But then again we do have over 3 meters of intestinal tract to clean out......:(

Thanks all for your responses... it seems that everyone is different in levels of detox and possibly toxicity.
Okay i cant handle this...this sucks! I am STILL sneezing and sniffling and feeling a bit flu-like. i hope i not getting sick :( because i havent been sick in ages . ever since i stopped taking my flu-shot i stopped getting the flu... go figure.
i just want to go home and curl up in my bed  i have a phone interview in 2 hours, i feel crappy.
thanks , i just needed to rant on that.

Hey guys. My excema is totally gone! I was 60-80% raw Jan -Feb and it went away. Now I am 100% raw in March and notice my pores getting smaller too. I also noticed that refined sugar was the primary culprit in what caused my breakouts. Once all the sugar was out then it all cleared up. I only got it on my hands and right hand knuckle. I used to get it on my feet as a child.
100% percent raw 1 week now and I am sooooo very tired and fatigued. Just want to go curl up in bed and throw the covers over my head....Ugh! I am supposed to work out tonight with my trainer and am dredding it since she kills me:) Almost fell over from fatigue working out with her on Sat. I am just going to have to explain to her that I am detoxing!!!!!!!!! AAHhhhhh!!! Te..he.. I am sure I can get through it ok. Yea...I am very tired and slept 12 hours the other night. Glad I have all you guys to talk to since nobody else I know is taking this challenge. Was very irratable on my lady day Monday and bled more than normal. Felt like I wanted to kill someone, but that passeed after the first day. Ugh...when will the tiredness & fatigue pass??? Uh...I almost forgot to mention, I had an injury to my low back hip several years ago that has been bothering me all of Feb. I have no pain at all even though I have been sitting all day today. Yipppee. A little pain alotta gain.

I've been raw for 11 weeks. In the early weeks I was hungry all day long, so I just kept eating and the hunger went away. Now I'm not so hungry, but I'm eating lots of food. I'm still losing abut 2#/week, so I'm happy. I never experienced that fatigue that some of you mentioned. I noticed more energy almost immediately. I sleep like a baby and go pretty strong most of the day.
I keep waiting for my gray hair to turn brown adn my nails to be stronger as I've read they might. My skin is quite clear, however, which is nice. a friend of mine remarked about it early on.

Just wanted to add,,,, my tongue is pretty gross today and easily bothered by tomatoes and garlic that I had tonight. I still have scallop markings around the edges/ teeth impressions. It means fluids are not draining properly or something:confused: I still feel bloated and puffy...........:( http://slunk.indiko.com/pilldance.gif

A couple of weeks ago I had what felt like a cold, but the usual sign of infection (heavy yellow-green mucus) never happened, so I know it was a detox.
Last August my tongue became severely coated and dark. I took a picture on 2006-08-12. When it was winding down, I figured out what was going on: the tongue epithelium was dividing rapidly, shedding blype-like sheets with junk in them.
I get the occasional pimple on my arm or leg or sometimes face.

I've been 100% Raw for a couple of weeks now after being high raw for many months. I get intermittent waves of fatigue and irritability that only a nap can cure. I'm prone to dark circles under my eyes and they are worse than ever now. Other than that, my skin looks noticeably better and friends are remarking on it. I'm also coughing up phlegm as think as bubble gum- wow! my body and brain have been swimming in a sea of mucuous!
But what really concerns me is that I'm at a point I've made it to several times now where the intensity of my feelings overwhelm me. I start feeling so lonely that I want to retreat to a soothing fog of dead food and space out and watch bad television. I need to meditate to make it through this phase so I can move on. It's hard!

Not sure why this is happening, but on Saturday, for some reason my jaw on my left side got really sore and it was hard to open my mouth. Its still here today, but not as stiff...weird. I'm sure its detox, but its the first I've heard of that symptom.
fatigue, headache, pain in teeth, cancer sores, acne, pain in arms where I had vaccinations - that's all I can think of now.

i have been raw for 2 weeks tomrrow and i have something like a flu or stomach bug except no diahrea and no puking. i have kinda sliped up every now and then like 4 days into it i ate at ruby teusdays salad bar and i had 2 plates of salad with everythign raw except for some beets. i also used like 4 ladles of balsamic vinagrette. wow. i felt really bad, just really sluggish and unfocused. i was weak, which was sucha difference from the amazing amount of energy i had experienced since i began. i was on the "clean eating diet" (tosca reno) for a month or two before this, and like alissa said the cooked food in my diet caused me to crave, and succummb to, junk food. a couple other times i have felt raelly bad when i decided (or convinced myself)that i could eat some unsoaked nuts. the fetuccini made me feel really bad, and i made some pie with half of the crust consisting of "raw" cashews (since practically all cashews, save those you can buy at sunfoods.com, are boiled to remove them from the shell. they say raw because theyre not roasted. i felt nautious and sluggish, and then i found out that info about cashews. i got some nut butters in the mail yesterday also and had some "raw" cashew butter and halvaH, both of which arent truly raw. with those combined i felt really bad, and actually tooka nap. then i was making hummus with some sprouted chickpeas, and i tasted some before i washed themm so maybe the mold got me butt...... now i am sick and my body is aching and occasionally i get a fever. i have a sore throat and just feel yucky. other than that i havent had detox symptoms really. my acne face and back is really cleaaring up, and i stopped taking my acne antiobiiotics (which i had been taking for a year). i have been spittin a lot of loogies and blowing my nose, but nothin else really. i guess i am going thru some detox now unless the mold from the beans got me.

Also forgot to mention, I have had a headache for 2 days now...I didn't note the specific day I went 100%, but it's been over a week - closer to 2...mind you, I have not been getting enuf sleep lately...but today I could have eaten off my right arm I am so hungry...I had a pear and a HUGE bunch of grapes at 8 and then at 11 I was ravenous so I had a apple, banana, peach smoothie...lunch was a salad with sprouted quinoa, broccoli, asparagus and spinach, 3 pieces of RAWvolution's onion bread AND a larabar...and I'm STILL hungry!! I've also had 1L of water...yeesh. I'm only little too! where is all this food going??

i was raw for 3 or 4 days last week, then on sunday night at a work meeting i caved and had tortilla chips with cooked hummus and salsa... now i've been solid since monday.. feeling mildly groggy, i had a canker a few days ago, mucousy mouth & throat, swollen gland and i have glasses that i usually don't need... they're a ridiculously mild prescription, but on the weekend i had to wear them, it was really frustrating that i suddenly needed to depend on them... the biggest thing i've noticed is that i'm having very few bowel movements, has anyone else had that problem? like i'm eating alot and it's not coming out!

I have been raw for about two weeks now and I have itchy skin, kinda like prickery here and there suddenly, and then just as suddenly they are gone. It's annoyoing. I am also very tired, could fall asleep right now if I wanted to. Sorta a clogged nose, just sorta like allergy symptoms or a cold. It is miserable.
Also, I get moody at the drop of a hat. It's the itching that is bothing me right now and I am so bloated. I sure hope all this is detox, but what else could it be if raw food is the only thing eaten?
This is a good thread. Reading others challenges helps me to feel better and that I'm not alone :) thank you for this thread and all the replies. Very helpful. Hope everyone feels better soon!

oh, i hope i don't have that to look forward to!
i've just got a terribly mucousy throat, constantly clearing my throat, it's not quite at the point where i can cough it out.. i'm sure my voice will be gone by sunday.. but i'm sticking it through.. i'm sleeping alot.. the other times i went raw for a few days i immediately needed less sleep, but this time it's like my body knows what i'm doing and jolted right into detox after less than a week..
wish me luck with this weekend! saturday night is always my weakness... but i made rawvolution's fudge to help me through..
one positive thing to note is ENERGY- that i can't get enough cardio at the gym... i've been monitoring my heart rate and excercising according to that and i can easily go over an hour... i used to be tired and bored after less than 15 mins.. i'm bummed that i won't have time to go today... unless i can get out of class early.. hmm...

When I started out at roughly 70% raw I had cold/flu-like symptoms for a few days. When I bumped up to high raw my allergies acted up and I was irritable, again lasting just a few days. After being 100% raw for about a week straight and having a cooked meal, my allergies started acting up again and I felt stiff, sore and tired.

Wow, I can relate to the eczema!!
I had it when I was a child and then it went into remission and surfaced again when I was 26. I'm 43 now, and have been battling it since then, at one point it was all over my entire body! I went to the doctor and all they did was give me a steriod creme. Sure, that helped, but it never went away!
UNITIL NOW!!!! I SO EXCITED THAT IT HAS CLEARED UP 100%!!! ITS GONE!!
I did the Master Cleanse on Jan 1st, and started eating raw after the cleanse. At first the eczema got worse, and for about 2 months I was going nuts. But hang it there!! It does get better!! I found relief by slathering pure coconut oil twice a day on my eczema until it started to subside. Try that for temporary relief.

I'm on day 24 of completely raw, and have found that I've had small red bumps on my face, arms, neck, back....like acne, but smaller pimples than normal, and they go away in a day or two. I also get occassional nausea, headache, bloating, intestinal cramping/diarrhea. Yesterday I felt tired and dizzy. But, my psoriasis is nearly gone, and I've dropped almost 8 lbs.
One thing I read about detox is that if it is a new symptom for you...like runny nose or stuffiness, it is detox if it doesn't last more than 2 weeks...if it is short lived, it is detox, if it lasts longer than 2 weeks, it could be illness. I think that is a good rule of thumb, but, for some conditions, like exzema, I could see it taking a lot longer than 2 weeks, and still be detox. Also, I think this article talked about detox when going raw in a step-wise fashion....over a period of months or years. I imagine the detox parameters would be different for someone going 100% raw "cold turkey". (where does that expression come from anyway?)
But, in any case, none of my detox symptoms seem to last more than a day or two, before shifting into something else, and circling back around again. Hope you all feel better, and hang in there....your body is loving you for choosing raw.

Belladonna, thank you so much for posting the link to the article about detox. The emotional rollarcoaster is exactly what I've been struggling with since I started the raw challenge a week ago, especially the heightened irritability and anxiety and lashing out. I thought it was just my new situation (I started grad school in a new field of study on Aug 27) and I've been worried because I've been so disappointed with so many things and almost to the point of wanting to quit (that is, the teaching assistantship I have, not the program). This article eased my mind a bit because now I can journal about it and try to wait out the detox with patience.

I'm not having any. I don't usually. I did the master cleanse twice, and both times my only symptom was bloodshot eyes.
I don't ever get sick, so I imagine I don't have much to detox.
However I'm at an uncomfortable weight so.... there's gotta be SOMETHIN my body needs to get rid of. Well..maybe it's something that can't be seen or shown in symptoms. I dunno...

So glad you posted this, I am on my 23rd day and have had little red like pimples on my cheeks also. I was just ready to post something about being so fatiqued. Started taking vitamins yesterday, worked out this morning but by the afternoon and now I feel so tired. Hopefully this is detoxing and will go away soon. Today's meals have been 4 oz wheatgrass, watermelon, salad with sprouts and a greens drink for dinner. I should be getting enough nurishment from that, but decided to add supplements to see if that helps.

throughout the course of my raw journey ive experienced:
red eye
breakouts
white gunk in my mouth one morning, ehh
unsatiable thirst, well almost unsatiable
tiredness
now im not going to attribute it all to detox necessarily, some could have been from poor food combining or not getting enough variety, etc but these are the "negatives" ive experienced so far. usually when something bad is happening though i dont sit back and attribute it to detox entirely. i research and try to see answers into my symptoms and see how i can tweak my diet/lifestyle to ease the symptoms and tbh that usually works. after all, thats how i came to raw in the first place.

For a couple weeks, my nose would run right after drinking a green smoothie. Plus a good bit of phlegm would develop in my lungs that needed to be coughed up. Those symptoms seem to be all but gone.
The raw food kahhhhleeeeened the ol' intestinal tract for the first two weeks. Not uncomfortable, but total volume was extraordinary. Sorry if that's TMI.
What I loved was the lack of caffeine withdrawal. :) I quit (half gallon of iced tea + diet cokes) cold turkey on day 2 of raw. No problem. Last time I tried that (on Atkins diet), I was in a horrible fog for about 10 days. And the caffeine craving was soooo bad, I was drinking it again in a month.
Other possible symptoms are some joint pain, but we're in the process of moving so that's not conclusive.
I also had emotional reactions the first two weeks. Very impatient, which is unusual for me.

What a great thread! Here's what detox stuff I've experienced 11 weeks into raw: nausea, gas, heavier period, acne breakouts, increased plaque requiring several times per day brushing, achey joints, blurry vision, itchy/dry skin, decreased bm's, congested feelings in the colon & liver, irritability, unexplained anger, sleepiness, unsociable feelings (I'm usually quite friendly/outgoing & positive), fatigue, gloomy outlook, lack of motivation to get moving, increased body odor, urine that smells like vitamin pills & did I mention SLEEPINESS??? I have gotten glimpses of the "raw buzz" I keep hearing about, but mostly I've got a lot of extra energy overshadowed by a serious desire to go to sleep!

11 weeks raw and still with detox???? I'm scared!!!!
I'm about 75 to 80% raw with only 3 days of 100% mixed somewhere in the past 3 weeks. With a couple days of 50% as well. The days I was 100% were great! But even this week, at about 75% I'm EXTREMELLY tired. and very irritable. Could be the job could be I'm anxious to go to school full time in january instead of the part time i've been at for almost 4 years.
Anyway, so far mine have been VERY tired, cranky after lunch, needing to take a deep breath (kinda feeling like i'm not getting enough oxygen), hands and arms hurt like a charlie horse, MAJOR HEADACHES, and very very thirsty, oh and really cold. and i live in texas!
but the pores on my nose look smaller and I get the feeling that I might not need base and powder (makeup) anymore....

Yep, that about sums me up too! But I'd like to add severe stomach pain. I must have been sicker than I thought!! LOL. :D

Hi
I am two weeks raw and here is what i am experiencing.
constipation on and off, bloating, my head feels like it is full of cement. A lot of pressure in my eyes and sinuses, blurred vission and very, very dizzy. Do you really think this is detox. I am a little anxious about it.

Biggest ones I get are the tiredness, hunger and spacey feeling, which is why I end up back on cooked or grain food. It seems to fill me up and give me energy to get off my rear end. I ended up hitting a parked car with my car I was so spaced and dizzy one day! Forget about the food and equipment costing money, now THAT really hurt.!
One thing have noticed is spaceiness in my head, irritability, a deep, profound depression and a sorrow that could flood the whole world if I gave into the tears. I have acute dreams. and my body hurts more than ever.I also cannot concentrate very well. I too, am very tired and exhausted and wake up several times during the night.

Only on day 1 of transition and I definitely have headaches, extra mucus and gas. After reading the posts, I am now worried things will get worse! Is that why people do colonics, enemas, etc. To speed this process up? I have a dry brush, so I could do that certainly, but I'm a little squeemish about the other things!

The past 2 nights I've had nightmares, which I almost never have. Today I awoke at 8, had to lie down at 12, slept for 2.5 hours, and have been exhausted and mildly depressed all day. Out of nowhere after feeling quite energetic. Feels like I could sleep for days...
Not sure if this IS detox...I have been eating one cooked, hot thing per day for the past week, along with all the rest raw, so maybe my body is simply reacting negatively to a week's worth of a toasted bagel for lunch??
I'm eating alot of greens and fruit.

Wow, I know I am wayyyy late posting this, but I have had three symptoms: a brief head cold/sinusitis that was in and out in a single day, and a lot of excess flatulence/gas. That, and a pimple under my left eye (unusual place for me to get one), and that's been it. I am really surprised by the cold for a couple of reasons. Since going vegan, I've rarely had a cold. Since 95% or so Raw vegan, I got this one cold. But it left quickly, in one day as stated. The other reason the cold surprised me is how fast it did leave. Wait - one last symptom: I notice sometimes I need a nap in the afternoon. I used to be Miss burn the candle at both ends, no naps ever. Now suddenly I need naps, about one a day to function right. I choose to see this as maybe my body always needed this, but it took dumping the sludge for it to surface from beneath and let me know that ;)
Other than that no bad symptoms to report. Good symptoms:
Rip-roaring energy
A very clear mind and good memory again finally
Positive for no reason most of the time
No more stomach pain (I was suffering this)
Less craving for caffeine - near "nil"
More craving for plain water
Sudden passion for hot spicy peppers
Sex drive through the roof, but no one to share it with
Wait, that's a bad symptom :D

I hit a wall around 12p. I'm fortunate enough that I can take a nap.
Upside:
More positive outlook
self-control:)
I don't wake up in the middle of the night to eat - thats a huge one!!!

this thread is so interesting to me because my husband has no detox symtoms and feels great, the only thing that happens to him is he gets cold easily in the morning. (we're on day 7)
but i am tired, one day had really achy joints, I'm a cyclist and did my slowest ride EVER last weekend, and i'm irregular. Today my eyes are red and my nose is red, like I'm having a hot flash (tho I'm not) or as if I drank 3 beers for lunch (which i certainly didn't.) I know they say to be patient but some days i'm so tired i'm tempted to stay home from work! (oh the problems with being an adult, you can't play hookie.)
Let's all pray for quick detox:D

I am posting this link not to promote the fruitarian diet but because this article will explain alot of what it is like to go through detox both emotionally and physically on a raw diet . Hope it helps others as it helped me.
From his article:
I was also riddled with anxiety, I spent my entire time from then on lashing out at people, which really wasn't me at all, on top of all of that I was constantly mentally and physicaly exhausted, as if someone had just flicked a switch, of course everybody thought I was crazy to continue on with this diet, nobody supported me at all and even though I still had faith in what I was doing, I was still totally overwhelmed, I believed every negative thing that was going on in my head to be true, it was impossible for me to tell the difference between fact or fiction at that time, I went from a happy go lucky guy that everyone wanted to be around to the exact opposite.
Wow, that's exactly what it's like to have PMS.
