Hey everyone. Just wondering if anyone takes Capoeira. I just started recently and absolutely LOVE it! If your not familar it's a brazilian martial art disguised as a dance. There are acrobatics involved, singing, dancing, and playing a musical instrument such as the berimbau. It is an amazing workout and definitely develops a strong body amongst other things. If anyone here practices it I would like to talk about it. :D

I don't practice any martial arts. But if I were to ever learn one, it would definitely be this one.

I have done turbo jam and that has capoeira moves in it. It really works the mid section. Thanks for mentioning it cause I haven't done it in a while. I'll have to start again.

I played Capoeira for the past six months but stopped right before I started going raw. Given the detox symptoms, I didn't want to push myself too hard while obtaining a new eating paradigm. Furthermore, I'm getting a major oral surgery in a few months (mandibular osteotomy) so I will not be able to play again for at least a year.

I loved Capoeira and want to resume when I can. I've always loved Brazil and Capoeira was another magical treat from Brazil. It also forced me to study Portuguese, which I think sounds beautiful as far as Romance language go. It also leads to a strong body and a confidence that takes a long time to develop, but is worth a lot. I intend to fling myself back into Capoeira some day.

Paraná ê, Paraná ê, Paraná!

Yeah I take Capoeira classes twice a week and have been for about 3 months now. It's crazy. My flexibility is through the roof and I'm way more graceful now that I ever was. There's still a lot of stuff I'm learning but, I'm liking what I've learned so far.

The Jinga has really helped me with real life dancing (if you can believe that) when I'm out at a party or a club. I mean, I'm not exactly James Brown or anything...but, at least I can hold my own on the dance floor now. It's good stuff. Any cool moves you're working on?

I just started this past month. I've been so busy that I was only able to go a few times. Now that I have more time I will be going 2-3 times a week. I'm learning the jinga, kicks, and acrobatics. I'm not sure what they are called yet since they are in portuguese but I'm learing. I really love it for the combination of music and dance plus defense. It has a nice spiritual side to it also. I'm a music lover and always go to the club to dance. I find that it's the other way around for me. I'm a ham on the dance floor and can hold it down.:) I feel that it has helped me to be more fluid in the roda especially when the drums start kicking up it reminds me of the dance floor. I see your screen name is jersey devil. Are you from jersey? If so where do you take class?

My stepkids (7 and 12) are from Brazil, and they used to take classes there 2-3 times a week. They LOVE it! Now that we brought them to the states, the Brazilian population is strong enough here (where I am in Massachusetts) that they actually teach it at the high school. Too bad the kids aren't in high school yet, I haven't found a teacher that has regular classes around here. They take karate classes, and have also taken Jiujitsu... and they still "dance" around the house practicing their capoeira at home.

This has given me a bit of inspiration to look out again for a capoeira class. Maybe there will be one now that it's getting warmer and busier around here... Hmmmm...

I'd never even heard of it, but it sounds right up my alley. I'm a yoga instructor and a former dancer (not professional and NOT pole...) :) and music is what moves me - I live near Dallas and I bet we have it here. I'll be on the look out! Thanks for the information! Cool!!!

I've used to play Capoeira 3 years ago but I had to quit because our teacher went back to Brasil. What a pity. It was the time when I went raw and it was amazing. I've also spent 4 weeks in Bahia to take classes. It was the best time I ever had (despite of giving raw food classes now;-)).
Boys and girls if you have the opportunity to take classes, just do it. You wont regret it. Only raw food is a bit better than capoeira (and in combination waow...)
Take care

Hi, I just got back from capoeira class. I lived in Brazil for 7 years and never got into it there but recently while traveling in India I was taken to a class in Mumbai. I didn't even know they had it here until 4 days after getting back from India, I passed by a roda down the street from my house! The group here is mostly kids 7-14 but I got into it because I love Brazilian culture, started teaching Portuguese as well as samba to the group as well. We are preparing for a Batizado this weekend, we've got mestres from San Diego and São Paulo here, and I get to speak Portuguese, so cool. I love the cross-cultural aspect here, chamorro (native Guamanian) kids singing in Portuguese having fun. dancing the samba hard core during fasting is tough though. Nice to know there are other capoeristas around! Axe!

It sounds great. I had never heard of it before. I may take it up one of these days. Is it very strenuous?

Same here. I wish Chalene would make all capoeira workouts because that's always my favorite part. I've searched through Amazon to see if there are any good Capoeira workouts on dvd, but none with good reviews.

It is definitely a good challenge. Good physical conditioning amongst many other things. If your eating raw and in pretty good shape then you should be able to progress nicely from the start. Otherwise you are gonna have to really work to get into the flow of it. Hope you check it out. I LOVE the culture, music, learning a language...

Divegoddess- That is so cool! I have fallen in love with it and just got my registration paper tonite so that I can take the test for my batizado in August!

I don't practice but I've taken a few classes. It's very healing spiritually. I thought you'd like to see this wonderful video of a capoeira cance in Brazil. The guy in green is excellent!
