View Full Version : Are there 'living' foods which are not raw?
When I read 'Raw and Living Food Discussion', I wonder if there are living foods which are not raw? I know all raw foods are living foods...seems like a tautology to say 'raw and living food'.

Well...if you get technical bout it, once you pluck that berry, or orange, or lettuce leaf, or cauliflower, it's technically not living anymore, right?
RowanC needs to jump in here and post her answer...:p
But it IS jammed packed with it's OWN supply of enzymes and has not had the life processed out of it, so yes, in that aspect is IS still living.

I think that when (some) people use the term "living food," in reference to something other than "raw" food, thay are referring to foods, some part of which has been cooked, but is then cultured, so that the end product has living organisms in it, like miso, commercial kefir, yogurt, maybe some of the tamaris??, hmm,...cannot think of any other examples.
So..all "Raw" foods are "living," on a cellular level, but not all "living" foods (according to this def.) are "Raw"....
That is how I have come to understand it....:)

Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, pickels, seed "cheese", rejuvelac, Nama Shoyu and miso are often considered living.

Yes there are.
One I can think of right off is an asian bean dish that is made from cooked beans. It is then fermented and becomes a living food because of the living fungi and possibly bacteria even though it is no longer raw. I don't remember the name but it has been discussed here. The beans then pull out long or something, kinda like hot cheese from what I got out of it. Possibly a search for bean would find it.
Maybe others will come up with more for you.

PS. see 3 others posted while I was typing.

is tempeh what you are thinking of?
Don't know. Does it fit the description?

Tempeh is a dish made from split soybeans, water, and a special bacteria, that is allowed to ferment for several hours. Tempeh is eaten in Indonesia and Sir Lanka as a staple food. It is available pre-packed, ready to prepare, in some natural food stores.

I think of raw foods as the freshest possible, before processing. Whereas living foods are those which are dehydrated. I use fresh foods, no condiments or spices, and rarely eat dehydrated food.
As I was growing up, the definition of raw was always colloquially meaning "before it's cooked". Like I'd always rather eat the blackberries before seeing them go into a pie, or would always ask for a celery stick before the rest went into the stir fry...
Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, pickels, seed "cheese", rejuvelac, Nama Shoyu and miso are often considered living.

Hmmm...I've been doing this 100% Raw and now I'm thinking I need to incorporate 'living' foods, to make this more interesting and satisfying (and for health benefits)!
Thanks, everyone! Now I need to go and try some of these 'living foods'.

I eat tempeh, usually doused with Nama Shoyu, when I need the protein but don't feel like avocado (or don't have any ripe avos).
Btw, "srilanka" is Lojban for "is a basket made from ribbons". ;)

Doe, could the cheesy beans be natto - it's Japanese and looks just like small baked beans (but not luminous orange) that have cheese melted on them and mixed in.

Natto is definitely both raw and living
Miso is only living (not raw)

Doe - You could be referring to Japanese fermented soybean product called "Natto." It fits the description. Check out the info and picture on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natto
I have heard a lot about its health benefits, but I'm not fond of the taste. :(
Edited: Oops. Looks like a few people have already posted info on this. Notice, though, that Natto is not raw. The soybeans are cooked before being left to ferment.

I think of raw foods, as any food that has not been depleted of it's enzymes by heat or any other method.
raw food to me, is also food that is fresh, or was fresh before I dehydrated or froze it to make something else.
living foods to me is either food that is cultured, fermented, etc. as stated above, miso, nama shoyu, saurkraut, kim chee, etc.
or it is food that still has it's life force, hense is living, which will continue living for a period of time, such as almonds, nuts, seeds as they sprouting
also, technically living foods could be foods that are feeding a bacteria that I wish to eat, such as kim chee, or miso, althought the raw or maybe not raw host feeds the bacteria, such as nut cheese, which is raw, but miso is not.
humm, lots to think about.
I've never been big on fermented foods though, I do love Nama shoyu and miso, but never kim chee or saukraut, soooo......
hope this helps
