I am beginning to run. Not even up to a mile yet. I used to run track in high school, but that was a while ago. Anyone got anything inspirational to say to a newbie? any advice? I know there is a raw run 2007 thread and I am making my way through that.

I wanna get those long lean runner muscles and lose this extra 10 pounds. Also I just wanna feel like I can go forever if I wanna. :)

The run/walk program from runners' world/coolrunning did work for me. As soon as I "graduated" I joined a running club and kept running 30' for 3 times a week. Now I am at 4 times a week. I am overweight and I feel it when running, but I keep going. Rome was not built in a day...

It has done wonders in the toning dept. Just put your shoes on and hit the road gal!

The best way to begin is just do it, go with how your body feels, and always listen to your body, it will tell you if what your doing is working for you. Just have fun, most people forget about that part. Forever young:cool:

When I started running (a year and a half ago), I did my own training regime. For me, I find books on training hard to follow. I've always trained myself in every sport.

I first ran once to see how far I could go. I used this as my base. I ran that 2-3 times a week (I started off barely able to do 2 miles). Then I added a mile a week for the weekend runs and 1/2 mile more on the shorter weekday run. So, on week two, I would run 2 - 2 1/2 miles on the weekdays and 3 miles on the weekend and up from there. All this was on flat road. After a few weeks I started adding some inclination and hills.

IPOD helps ALOT!! I cannot run without it. For me too, I always want to give up on the first 2 miles- even when I'm used to running 10. I set small goals when I get tired. For instance: okay, to the light post and I can walk 30 seconds.....to the grocery store and I can stop for a second.....

As the Nike commercial says..."just do it":p ....Go for time as opposed to distance....walk 3, run 2.....repeat to 30 minutes....As it gets easier increase your running jaunts and decrease your walking time until eventually you are running 30 minutes straight....Then, if you want to build THAt base your body will adjust in increments...."slow and steady wins the race" is my motto....I have been running consistently since 1999 and have always gone by the time vs. mileage theory...

For me the best thing that worked was starting out slow and staying consistant. A good plan is to run everyother day consistantly. Hit and miss running does not build up a good base. Also look for road races in your area. Even if you don't race they are very motivational. Watch out you might get bit by the racing bug! I sure did and then the golf bug bit me and I don't race anymore, but I still miss it at times.

Thanks guys. I've done a bit of sporatic running on my gravel road--not so enjoyable, dogs barking, people yelling. So the other day I went to the track. Only did one lap because I was underdressed and freezing and the wind was blowing in my ears. I went again yesterday and it was great. I did 1 1/4 miles of a combination of running, walking, and sprinting. The smells of the track and the feel of the air in my lungs reminded me of my high school track days and I am reHOOKED!!! I know now that I am raw I will blow away all of my old times. Since'n I know bout nutrition now. I could have run longer but my digestion wouldn't let me, lol. I've gotta find a long jump pit now. I LOOOOVE long jump. I can't wait to go back today. I am so excited! :D

i've just started running myself! i can bike for hours just find but i can hardly run at all, my cardiovascular system is far from trained, but i'm going to do it. eventually i'd like to be able to run ten miles straight, but i'm starting off at a goal of one mile :D i use a tread mill.

try 30 seconds running
30 seconds walking
and repeat for twenty to thirty minutes

and then increase your running seconds as you feel you can.

it's working for me, i feel great, i sweat a ton, i've only been on this program for a few days but i know i'm going to stick to it, i long the morning i can get up at five am and enjoy the fresh cool air and run and run and run.
