We just finished talking about breafast, he is very unhappy and i need suggestions other than raw oatmeal and green smoothies.
He says that he is so hungry by midmorning that he can't stand it anymore.
I tried fruit and nuts, i don't know where to go so can anyone out there help us.
He trys to eat semi-raw but he's getting fustrated with being hungry and he says he needs something that will fill him up.
What do you all feed a "hungry man"?
Thanks for you breakfast suggestions they are badly needed.

How about Rawkinlocs pecan cinnamon buns? They are oh-so-good and filling. And who says it has to be breakfast type foods? I've eaten salads for breakfast, pizza for breakfast - raw of course!

Can he take portable fruits to snack on at work?
Bananas tend to stick to the ribs...
Also, I think Alissa sells really raw oatmeal. You mentioned being tried of raw oatmeal and green smoothies, but perhaps make it different ways?

You might buy that and create a meusli type cereal with almond milk and fruit.

What type of foods did you eat on cooked?
I know my cooked family rarely has variety with their breakfasts.

Was just thinking Alissa's recipe for sausage might be more manly...

Bethanie,

I think that because hubby is not all raw, it is going to be more slightly more difficult for him because he has not yet allowed his body to get fully accustomed to the lighter feeling of eating raw foods. For many people, a smoothie or a nice bowl of raw oatmeal (or even grawnola with nut milk) is very filling and lasts for a while before needing to eat again or if not they have a mid-morning snack. Could he just have a mid-morning snack or is that not possible due to his field of work?

Is it possible that hubby simply wants to eat what he wants (a nice, hearty, cooked breakfast) and therefore, pretty much nothing that is raw will suffice at breakfast time? I know that if my husband is craving something in particular that is cooked, I can make him a raw something and he'll eat it, but he'll STILL want that craving satisfied. So, just wondering if this may be the case with your husband at this particular time. Maybe he's just sorta fed up with raw foods and really wants something else (?)

But if he truly does want to try and stick to eating raw in the mornings, in all actuality, he could eat pretty much anything at breakfast time and it doesn't have to be what we've come to know as "breakfast food", know what I mean? We're so used to certain foods being used for breakfast (eggs, bacon, etc.) and certain foods for lunch (sandwich, burgers, etc.) and certain foods for dinner (meat course with sides, etc.) But he could eat really anything that satisifies and fills him up - doesn't have to be a "breakfast-type" food.

Also, since he is not all raw, perhaps just feed him something that may not be totally raw, but at the very least vegan/vegetarian. Maybe a sprouted grain tortilla wrapped around marinated veggies and a raw cheeze sauce for example. I don't really want to be giving advice of feeding him non-raw foods on a raw foods forum, but sometimes people are just not ready or willing to go all the way and so we have to meet them half way, so that is just a minor suggestion.

Maybe he just simply needs to eat more. A smoothie AND a bowl of raw oats or grawnola with nut milk AND a banana or two or maybe the portions need to be larger.

Just trying to brainstorm with you a bit.

My husband has been enjoying smoothies in the morning made with our Magic Bullet (so he can make one for himself fast and easy).

The ingredients very... but the normal things are:

1/3 apple (he usually eats the rest...while he is getting the other items)
2 or 3 small frozen strawberries or 5 or 6 frozen blueberries
half banana
1/8 raw oats (ground in grinder prior)

Fill the rest of the cup with almond milk and blend.

This drink needs to be consumed...in the next 10 minutes. I am not saying it has to be a 'shot' (downing it as fast as you can)...however, it is not a drink that you want to let sit for too long. Without the oats... by adding the banana...the drink will thicken the longer it sits. With the oats...it thickens faster.
It is a great addition to the morning meal.

Donna.

My husband tries so hard to eat this way.
I want him around for a long time and i want to be around just as long.
I fixed him a green smoothie and then he ate an apple like in a few seconds, it was kind of funny to see him do it.
I've tried the smoothie with the raw oats but he says that he has a very physical job and not much time for lunch especially if he has to do a lot of chewing and smoothies are not as option for lunch that is why he needs a filling breakfast food so i really appreciate all the help.
It's difficult to satisfy his appetite but i will keep trying, thanks again.

Could you make and pack him some breakfast bars so he can just munch on that when he gets hungry? I know Alissa has a recipe for bars in her book and there are probably a few here as well.

Sounds like he just needs something easy he can have with him that is easily accessible that he can just nibble on through out his work day.

What does he want to eat for breakfast?

But in your last post, it sounds as if lunch is the issue and not breakfast (??) I think he is just going to have to train his body to firstly, eat MORE at breakfast...he doesn't necessarily need heavier meals, but he just needs to eat more. You've heard of people eating like 10 bananas in one meal sitting, etc...that may be what he needs to do - just learn to eat a larger quanity of what you've been already giving him. Where the average person may drink 16 oz. of green smoothie, maybe he needs 24 or 32 oz. Where the average person may only need a regular-sized bowl of the oatmeal, maybe he needs a larger bowl and be sure to put lots of chopped fruit, nuts, raisins, etc in it. Or again, he could have a variety of things in one breakfast sitting. The smoothie, the oats and some fruit...all in one sitting to fill him up.

Also, keep in mind that some of the feelings we have come to associate with hunger aren't necessarily TRUE hunger...his body just needs time to adjust. But until then, again, try and give him things he can take to snack on while working - bars, trailmix, bananas, apples, make fruit leather, raw dehydrated cookies loaded with fruit and nuts.

if he doesn't have a breakfast that is filling enough for him at lunch time he is so hungry whatever i prepare him for lunch is gone and he is dizzy and is tempted to eat potato chips or popcorn or go hungry until he gets back home at the end of the day.
He has a large salad bowl that he fills up and loves to eat every meal from:) it's hard to get him to eat from a plate.
He's 6ft 2 inches tall and slender build and he never seems to get full when he eats.
So, breakfast has to be filling so that by lunch time he has not had to eat his lunch at 9:30 am.
I will try all the ideas that everyone has given to us, we really appreciate all the support.
Thanks

i suggest green tea . even though many say it isnt raw its just simple plant matter in a liquid form not a solid . and it quells the appetite to the max .
it sort of seems to help shrink the stomach down from its bloated from cooked food state so that lesser more nutrient dense amounts of raw shall give one a full feeling . i drank green tea constantly at the start , day and night . and i filled plastic peanut jars you get peanuts in at grocers with homemade trail mix heavy in nuts and seeds . and ate with bananas . carrying the trail mix this way allows you to bring it everywhere and just 'drink' it out of the jar for conveinince .

just for insurance i repeat = GREEN TEA !

i just saw your new post about dizziness . i say a dry fruit like pineapple chunks or raisins with sugar . the sugar helps .

but i had this too , i do outdoor manual labor and run/lift/bike . and had many times over near a year when started raw that i felt like i was running out of energy / dizzy but now thats over with and ive better endurance on my runs and greater strength on weights . its just an adjustment period to focus through .

My husband likes green tea so i will make that for him everyday from now on.
I will also look up some trail mix bars.
I just tryed to a raw sweet potato breakfast, grinded up some sweet potatoes and mixed them with golden raisins and walnuts and cane sugar.
I kind of like it but my husband still likes steamed sweet potatoes with walnuts and coconut.
As long as we make an effort i believe everything will work out. Changing from the cooked food diet is worth it.

Bethanie,

I know you can make candied walnuts in the dehydrator. Why not make him a sweet potato pudding or pie type base and sprinkle coconut and candied walnuts on top. That would pack well too.

i know youve said oatmeal dont work but heres a try a little different .
grind the oatmeal up in blender to a coarse powder before adding water .

also crush up some walnuts to a coarse grind to add to oats .

also in blender powder up some sesame seeds which are high in fat/oil for energy .

so now the oats are powdered , the walnuts powdered , the sesame powdered . add a banana . and OMG your hubbys gonna get fat as a pig :D ,
because this is a dense + heavy + concentrated fuel and itll supply energy. plus you can put some in a thermos for him to take to work .

that said i still believe theres an several month long to a year adjustment period for the body to feel in tune again . but thats when i realized i had more strength and endurance . so my faith in raw payed off then . its a matter of keeping the faith in it .

also grinding up say a third cup of sesame seeds before adding sweet fruit for a morning smoothie like bananas is another heavy fuel i like .

You could try this snack... my boys like it and my husband eats it for snack.
In a food processor:
First Blend
1 cup of almonds
1/4 cup blended millet
1/4 cup blended oats

Then add
squeeze of lemon
a bit of agave

1/4 cup raisins
6 pitted soaked dates
4 or 5 soaked apricots

I add the dates and apricots one at a time because the drier the ingredients the better it blends.

At the end of all this...it may be grainy or sticky - depending on how big the dates and apricots were. I like it to be a bit grainy because then you can easily empty all of this into a pie plate and press it out flat. But...both taste the same.
Once pressed into pie plate cut into squares like brownies.
I have on occasion pressed it out and then pressed coconut on top.
You can add whatever you want to this recipe and it seems to be good.
I have also on occasion added cocoa while blending - it was yummy.

when I first started out with Raw and my kids didn't eat ANYTHING so it seemed (and my husband was being a stubborn SAD person). I would blend up broccoli - and mix it into this WITH COCOA :D
They had no idea and it was usually eaten within the day. (this requires refridgeration though)
Then...I started to remove more and more cocoa. Now...they all like raw broccoli and I do not stick it in this any more. Hmmm...I wonder how they acquired the taste? :p

These (without the broccoli :) ) cut up and can be taken in baggies to work as a snack like a granola bar. If you want...if your blend is sticky...you can blend some millet for 'powdering' the outsides of the granola bar so that it isn't sticky.

Good luck,
Donna.

I ate totally raw in 2004 and lost 65 lbs. I recently got married and gained 90! I feel awefull. I try to help my husband eat raw, or just vegan...and he gives me a hard time. I want my life back. I feel so good being a raw vegan. I need to get back on track. Maybe my commited life style will bring him around. But, cooked food seems so comforting. I need help! I feel like I'm always hungry. So, I drink more water to the point of marking each glass I drink down. This is my first day back to life. Pray for me...vegetees

p.s. I'll be praying for you too.

It can be difficult at times preparing two different meals in terms of him having cooked or semi-cooked(steamed) and you having all raw.
The smell and sometimes the texture of a veggie throws me off my game.
I love steam califlower and broccoli and i find myself at times eating just a little bit of it.
Hang in there and your weight loss is inspiring, you'll get back there don't worry. My weightloss is slow but i'm not too upset, i'm feeling healthy and stronger so that makes me feel good.
Your friend Bethanie:)
