What do you call the tool needed to open one up? I have scoured eBay...but it may help if I knew the actual name for it!
Thanks! :p

I use the back end of my biggest kitchen knife and give it a few good whacks. Here is a video that shows you how to do it:

I just recently learned how to do it like this. Previously, I tried to chisel into it with a knife. Not a good idea, let me tell you. Let's just say I didn't eat any fresh coconut after I had to get stitches when my hand slipped across the blade (trying to open it the WRONG way) until I learned the proper way to open a coconut! :o

I use a hammer and a nail. I hammer the nail into the soft three "eyes" and then drain the milk into a glass. Then I take the coconut outside onto the cement and whack it with the hammer. I love having a hammer as a kitchen tool.

I put the coconut in a few grocery bags and take it outside and smack it on the concrete a few times..It does the job well(that is if your talking about the mature ones).....

Alissa shows how to open a coconut on her DVD, the link posted above is excellent too

I usually take a sharp nail or object, jab it into the eye of the coconut, set the coconut upside down on a glass, and allow the water to come out,

then I take a hammer, and WHACK it really hard, while holding it in my hand, and it just splits right in two, usually after a couple fo WHACKS

then I pry out the meat and eat it, I drink the water, and eat as much as I can, then put the rest in a ziplock, I usually have a few coconuts laying around my kitchen, as I love them soooooo much, they are getting sweeter and sweeter, or may be my taste buds are changing again. LOL

I use a pretty big nail to poke a couple of holes in the coconut to drain the milk, then to break it open I have a 3 pound cleaver to whack it open. Works like a charm.

I use a hammer and a screwdriver to open 2 eyes, drain the water, and then like RP, I whack it hard with a hammer to break up the rest.

I just found this on youtube:

It is an easy way to open a mature coconut... he uses the blunt part of the cleaver/knife. I can't wait until my fast is over so I can try it. I can't afford the young coconuts near me, they are over $2 a piece so I'm thinking of trying the mature ones.
