Anyone have any great ideas? I'm starting brand new on a green smoothie fast, never done it before and have no idea how green smoothies taste to begin with, so any ideas would help!

My favourite is spinach, pear, lemon juice, parsley, and celery juice (or water so you don't have to dirty your juicer). Blend it up and enjoy!

One of my favorites is:

2 cups of water
about 4 kale leaves
2-3 bananas
about 1/4 C or a handful of raspberries (I use organic frozen)

Another is:

2 cups of water
handful of parsley
2-3 apples
1/2 to 1 lemon juiced (depending on how sour you like it, I usually use 1/2)

My personal favorite is:

Frozen bananas
Frozen mango
Couple handfuls of spinach
Coconut butter
Touch of vanilla
Pinch of sea salt
Some kelp and/or spirulina if I feel like it
Just enough water to help it blend

Depending on how ripe your bananas are/were when they were frozen, you may or may not need any additional sweetener.

Btw, this makes a really pretty green color. I've noticed that if you start mixing greens and berries, you oftentimes (not always, but often) get a not-so-pretty muddy color. *shrugs* Still tastes good, but I like my pretty green mango/banana/spinach drink. :D

I really love the combination of 1 apple, 1 whole (peeled) orange, couple of cubes of pineapple (it's actually the core because when I buy whole pineapple, I slice up the core and freeze to put into smoothies), handful of greens (I use either kale, spinach or parsley mostly) and maybe about 1/8-1/4 c. water.

If you don't have a power blender, then make sure to blend it well and if it gets a little warmer than you'd like, once it's all well-blended, add some ice to it.

AAARGGHH!!! and I just cut up a pineapple last night! I've been buying fresh pineapple lately (sooooooo much better than canned) and I tried juicing the core once, but my juicer sounded like it was struggling, so I didn't want to put it throughthat h3ll anymore.
I always wondered what I should do with the core because i don't want to waste it.

Thanx, Rawkinlocs!

Sure thing! ;) I used to toss 'em too and then I thought to try blending it in the vitamix with my smoothie and it worked great. Just gotta make sure it's blended enough or else you may end up with little "threads" in your mouth!

I like:
2 cups filtered water
handful of greens - my personal fav is spinach
banana
orange innerds
spirulina
and another fruit. Either frozen pineapple, blueberries, or whatever suits me.

Lately I've been on a mango kick since I got a mango splitter - new toy! (Adding a mango into the smoothie)

Well, this morning as I was making my green smoothie for breakfast, I felt my blender sort of giving out. Now that my BF's son moved in with us, I'm making stuff for 3 people. He loves the majority of the stuff I make (plus I don't tell him i throw in spinach and/or sprouts into the smoothies-they never know).
soooo, i guess this is just the excuse i needed-it's time for me to upgrade to the vitamix blender and for sure get the omega juicer...my normal combination blender/food processor just can't take it anymore!

Every morning I make the same one:

1 inch slice of pineapple, with the skin cut off and cut into 8ths like a wheel
2 bananas
about 1/2 cup frozen berries
Handful of spinach or kale or collards (3 leaves)

If I have fruit that's getting to ripe, like pears or kiwi, I toss them in.
Sometimes I'll add a peeled orange or tangerine if I have it.

Blend and eat. YUM!

Do smoothies make anyone else have to run to pee all morning? :D

Hi,

* when you put celery or apple in your smoothie, do you first juice these or do you add it direct in the blender?

* are there people who, making a smoothie, both juice and blend?
(by adding the juiced ingredients to the ingredients with only have to be blended)

thanks, LL :p

I know they say the best thing to do is drink what you juice at the time. But I always juice first and keep a days worth of supply, to use for the smoothies. I don't like the stringy stuff in my smoothies...I like them smooth.
heck, the smoothie I made today, you couldn't even tell I added sprouts and spinach to it. you could taste the sprouts, but you couldn't see them and unless you knew what they were, it didn't taste funny.

i just made my first green smoothie, HOORAY!! Holy moly is it ever delicious!! i have been juicing for the past few months even though everyone keeps talking about these smoothies. the texture i'll have to get used to, but at least i'm getting the fiber!

i used 1 fugi apple, a handful of spinach, half a huge cucumber and a small handful of cilantro...ooowee!!

Aren't you amazed at how you can "cover" up the spinach, and sprouts for that matter, to make others drink it. Now I don't have to make my BF's son eat his veggies if he didn't want to. He doesn't realize he's drinking them in the morning.

He's really big into body building, but like my BF, he firmly believes the best protien source comes from chicken, tuna, and lean beef. I told him about the sprouts and he made some smart@zz comment about "it tastes just like grass."

Well, he's been drinking them every morning since he moved in with us last week...but funny, they taste just like fruit!!
*evil grin*

For the three quarts of green smoothies I made this morning, I used the following: (divided into three batches in the blendtec blender).

1 pound romaine lettuce
5 bananas
2 cups frozen peaches
1 cup frozen blueberries
½ cup whole frozen cranberries
42 oz filtered tap water

Into one of the smoothies (the one I drank right away) I added 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds. I had one quart for breakfast and I put two quarts in the fridge to drink later.

2 cups water
1 apple
1 orange
1/2 grapefruit
1 teaspoon green powder (spirulina + other micronutrients)
ground flax seed (2 tablespoons)
5-8 leaves of kale, or half a bag of spinach

I make the same one every day. I try to rotate greens: collard greens or Swiss chard are good too.

Of all the raw food, the green smoothie is my favorite!!!!!

Lightlover,

If you have a Vitamix or a similar powerful blender it makes a smooth liquid of any fruit you might want to throw in. I run my blender for a couple of minutes to make sure everything is pulverized.

To juice before blending is unnecessary unless you like your smoothie without any fiber in it. I do cut the core out of my apples and skin any oranges and remove the pits.
Just make your favorite fruit smoothie in the blender, then add your greens a little at a time until your tastebuds had enough. The more used you get to the taste, the more greens you can put in. You want more greens than fruit (eventually.)

Good luck!

Hi, about smoothies: does someone now the answer to the question of sungoddess below: can you blend carrots and beets?
Is the reason you don't read about this:

1) your machine will not like this
2) it will not taste nice (fiber etc...)

thanks, LL :p

I am drinking carrot and beet juice from an organic juicebar right now. Did somebody say in a different post that carrots can't be blended? they have to be juiced??? it would be great to use my vitamix....

I have never been a big greens fan, but of late, I know I MUST get more in, so I've been using dehydrated greens in my smoothies, this works really well, can't even taste them, or if using fresh, my favorite it

lime
celery
cilantro

I may add some ice or water too, or even some sweetener if serving to non rawbies

super refreshing and tasty,

I've found organic celery to taste very sweet to me, more sweet than carrots, of course, that may be my raw taste bugs showing through

Carrots *can* be blended but it wont taste like carrot juice. I used to love carrot juice and it was the first thing I made when I got my K-Tec TotalBlender. UGGG.... not good! I couldn't even drink it. It ends up being very pulpy. I never add carrot to my green smooties. If I felt like carrot juice I'd break out my juicer.

my current favorite (which my 4 year old and 3 year old will actually drink!) is:

pineapple (a cup or so???) OR a whole fresh mango (peeled of course)
a pretty ripe banana
2 oranges, peeled and de-seeded if needed
and a bunch of parsley...i just use leaves....which brings me to a question:

I just got a vitamix and am loving it. can i just throw in the whole parsley, stem and all, or will it taste wierd? i once ate the stems of kale...YUCK!....and now i'm paranoid about stems! just trying to avoid wasting a whole smoothie by asking here before i try it! :)

Hey, that is a good question...Can everyone give us newbie's their 2 cents' worth on any tips for this? What exactly do you do for prepping for your smoothies?
I remember someone once said they "remove the viens of the chard leaf" (i think i'm saying it correctly) before throwing it in to blend. Any other "parts" of the greens we should be wary of? Also I saw Dandelion greens in my local supermarket. Has anyone used these in green smoothies with great results? Which parts would I use?
So far, I've only been using romaine lettuce, sprouts, and/or spinach becuase I'm too scared to waste a whole smoothie like laurabfig said.

Heres the one i was describing awhile ago w/ measurements (i think they are pretty accurate....you can tweak however you want =)... this is a big smoothie at least 20oz....
2 big handfuls of spinich
1frozen banana
1 tbls flax oil
1 tbls spirulina
1 tbls maca powder
1 or 2 cup almond milk
2 dates
1 small handful goji berries (1/4 cup?)
Soak goji berries and dates till soft(1/2 hour?) in about 12oz of water. Blend all ingredients and then add as much soak water that you want for consistency. Enjoy!

What's a mango splitter? I hadn't eaten mangos before learning about raw foods. I have to admit, cutting them up is a bit of a chore.

One of my favorites is:

2 cups of water
about 4 kale leaves
2-3 bananas
about 1/4 C or a handful of raspberries (I use organic frozen)

Another is:

2 cups of water
handful of parsley
2-3 apples
1/2 to 1 lemon juiced (depending on how sour you like it, I usually use 1/2)

When I use Kale I devein, but it is still thick and I do not seem to be able to "process" long enough for it to be smooth. What am I not doing?

12 oz. water
1 large banana
8 oz. green cabbage

Lately I'm trying to do ALL-GREEN smoothies, as opposed to the ones with a ton of fruit. (I'm trying to cut out sugar for a few weeks) Yet it can be challenging to make them taste good.

My staple as of late has been:

cucumber (whole)
avocado (whole)
coconut oil (2 tablespoons)
sprouts, if available
spinach (or any other greens)
lemon (whole)
mint
pinch of cayenne
water
ice

If any of you have recipes for smoothies that are ALL-GREEN, please post 'em for me!
THANKS!!!!!

oh, I'd love some all green recipes too!

My favorite (not all green) is:

coconut butter
almond butter
6 cups spinach
1 banana
frozen peach, blueberry and strawberry.

It's also good with kale.
