I did a check on fitday.com on what I'd eaten today compared to what I'd burned. I was kind of shocked.

I've been eating a lot today, but still my calories only went up to maybe 1200, when I'd burnt like 2500.
I though I was healthy, eating enough, but this means I have to eat like twice as much EVERY DAY...

Is my body in starvation mode? Or can you eat less calories and still be healthy?

Is this a raw thing, have you guys had this happening to you?

Gah, I don't want my body to starve, I want it to heal and be healthy... more avocados? or an explanation from oen of you, raw-guides online...

When they figure the energy in food, they don't count cellulose, because they figure we can't burn it. But I found this quote in Wild Health:

Humans and lowland gorillas share similar digestive tracts - in particular, the colon - but while gorillas derive up to 60 percent of their total energy from fiber fermentation, modern humans get only about 4 percent.
I suspect that after eating raw for a while, we can now use that energy. I haven't seen a tattered lettuce leaf come out in a long time; that probably means I'm fermenting it.

I think you should do what your body feels best on. Don't stuff it until you're uncomfortable and tired. I tend to be leery of what doctors or the USDA says he "should" do. Each person is different. Eacy body is different. We don't all need the same amount of calories. Some need much less than "normal" while others eat twice the "normal" amount. My wild theory is that SAD eaters have to have this amount to even think about getting the proper amount of vitamins/minterals/etc. ASSUMING they're eating healthy food to the SAD standards. Now there are those that eat multiple times the reccomended amount, but in foods void of any nutrients such as white flour and sugar. See where I'm kind of getting at? Just because the big dudes say we "need" something, do we really? If you have energy, feel healthy, and are thriving on a lower calorie amount than we "need" then why change that? My other point is...we're eating HIGH nutrient food. Not high as in calorically, but actual vitamins/amino acids/minerals, so I believe we need less in calories. You get more for your money. There is even research out there that slightly restricted calories can expan lifetime. Now, they aren't letting us know if the people are cutting back on the fats/sugars/animal produts, or if they're consuming most a plant based diet.

Eat until you are full. Eat to be healthy. Eat to live. Don't worry about the calories and stress out over that. Don't worry with what our society has become obsessed with. Be you :)

Personally I think just listen to your body. I could drive myself crazy counting calories, which is why I had to stop even before I was doing raw. The people at the gym did thier little calculation and told me I need to eat 2,000 calories a day to lose weight and anything less than 1800 my body will think its starving and I'll binge on bad foods cuz of the crazvings. Well I don't think I am getting anywhere near that (and there has been no cravings), and at first I wondered, but then I realised my body is amazing and will tell me what it wants. Some days I eat more some days I'm eating less, but the less I worry and think about things oddly enough the more clear the signal is for me when I am hungry and what I am hungry for. I hope that helped a little

I love that I do not have to count calories any more. I just eat my fruits, veggies, and nuts. So simple! I was worring about if everything I was eating was really raw, but now I just eat. No worries! Its a wonderful life!

I love your replies,
every time I go here and read posts and replies I'm amazed by how free and calm people seem. I'm still thinking the SAD way, that we have to treat our bodies like machines that must be controlled by our mind, when in fact everything would be so much easier if we all just let go nd started listening to our bodies.

Like right now, I have a headache. My body is actually telling me something, perhaps that I need to rest, but my intellect tells me to stay up to work hard and make achievements so other people will like me.

thank you for your wisdom!

Since I went raw at the end of January, I've dropped over 20 pounds, and I don't monitor what I intake, calorie-wise. What I do instead is monitor my body, and what it really wants. If I start craving tons of fat, I stop and assess if that's what I really want, or just my brain. :) Most days I lean toward lots of veggies and fruit, and one meal with nuts, but that's just me. Listen to your body and you can't go wrong.
