This happened when I first started the raw diet and is happening now that I'm trying to get back on track from a few slip ups. I wake up at night or in the wee hours of the morning with a low blood sugar reaction. I have to get up and go eat something. When I first started out this lasted a few days then straightened out. It probably will this time too. Just wondering if there is a way to prevent this, or is it just something I have to wait out?

Are you eating fruit before bed? I would suggest having some fat/veggies instead of something sweet. A salad w/avocado, or just an avocado with lemon, or a handful of nuts.

I can share my experience with this, though it sounds like your situation might be bigger than mine was. I have dealt with low blood sugar for a while, where I would have to eat every few hours and be miserable & ill if I missed a snack.
My experience is that on raw my blood sugar evened out for the most part. I still find myself having to eat often, and fasting is a big deal for me, but I can skip a meal and not panic. However it took a while on raw to figure out what foods & combinations balace me, and which don't. I found that not all raw food is created equally. I avoid really sweet fruits (like bananas, mangos, dates) because they aren't satisfying (for a few hours) and they cause too much of a spike. Rather I like grapefruit, berries, apples, oranges, kiwi... That is what's available for me. I find mixing fruits with a little bit of fat allows the fruit to keep me satiated longer and prevents a crash. (except grapefruit)
Stevia is a good blood sugar balancer, so I'll put some of that in tea if I'm feeling the need for more balance. Also Vitamineral Green, drinking green juice every day, and exercise have really helped me.

Hi.
I'm new to RAW, and new to this forum. But I wanted to comment on eating in the middle of the night? I have been off-and-on doing it for almost two years, and I've never correlated it with low blood sugar..But any supplementary advise about this would be greatly appreciated.
I'm hoping that a full commitment to RAW and no coffee (!) will help.. SO I know how you feel fruitcake...

Hey collards,
May I ask what is prompting you to get up at night? Shaking, sweating, salivating, horrible gnawing sensation in your stomach, anthing like that? Just wondering if your experienceing the same thing I am. When I switch back and forth it seems to cause me sugar to drop at night.
But.... Eating more fats did help! The day before I wrote the first message I had 4 golden delicious and half a bag of baby carrots. So I was probably seriously lacking in that department compared with how I was eating a few days before.
Thanks Guys!

Hey Fruitcake,
I honestly don't know what is waking me up at night.. Honestly, I'm so sleepy, I don't even think I pause a moment to listen to my body, which is a shame. But I do know what it's like to have that shaking feeling, and the gnawing sensation in my stomach....B/C I'm definitely prone to eating sugary foods. I'm a fruitaholic..
I'm hoping that sticking to living foods, and increasing my fat intake (like you said) will help...
Good luck :)
