Am I the only one that can't stand these stinky things? I've tried raw nori, wakame (sic) and dulce. I always loves fish, shrimp, et cetera, but of course Good Fresh seafood (I know this is a vegan site, I'm speaking of past experience, don't yell at me) does not smell or taste fishy. But the sea veggies -- bleck, eck, stinky, gag me with a spoon! I wish some of you folks who love this stuff lived across the street. I hate throwing it in the trash, stuff ain't cheap, but it's just too gross and I know I'll never eat any of it. Oh, well, different strokes, et cetera.

If you invest in a high quality version of nori, it doesn't have fishy smell. Dulse obviously is going to be more concentrated and salty.

What were trying to make?

How does one know "high quality" raw nori from not? I buy most of my "raw food" items at Wild Oats. I don't think they sell junk, just happens that I don't care for these particular items. I didn't have anything specific in mind for them, other than obviously making "rolls" with the nori and was going to use the wakame and dulse in salads or whatever.

It's no big think. Just that there seemed to be so many folks that love the stuff, I thought I'd give it a try, and wondered if I was the only one that didn't like the smell/taste. I was somewhat underwhelmed with the young coconuts that everyone raves about as well, seems like a lot of work for not much return, but I'm sure that's just me also.

No where does it say we're all gonna like the same thing, right?! ;)

Hi Izzy,
I hear ya. A few years back I bought a pound of spirulina and after gagging myself trying to choke it down 4 or 5 different ways I finally tossed this very expensive product.

mmm... nice pics V. Actually, I undertand. I didn't used to like these sea plants either. Now, I really enjoy them. Using nori for wraps and a bit of dulse in salads adds a nice distinctive flavor... a little fishy yeah- but I guess I have a taste for it now. :p

I can't stand fishy things either. Nori grew on me. I made some nori snacks from http://www.raw-pleasure.com.au/ there is a free ebook (see right link on nav bar). They are so good. I roll them just like a regular nori roll (they say to stack the nori sheets). As for dulse, I bought some dulse flakes and tried them once. They have been sitting in my cupboard since. Too fishy/strong for me.

OK, someone needs to explain this one to me.
Is eating sea veggies considered vegan? Or is it like honey - kind of iffy, and each individual makes their own decision?
Because to me, all sea veggies, whether it is dulse, kelp, or whatever - they all grow in the ocean and as such are covered in all sorts of other ocean dwellers - living (as in non-plant) ocean dwellers - their waste, their remains, etc. I remember seeing a link once to one company that sells sea veggies that are cultivated in a fish free area, but I believe all other kelp/dulse on the market is contaminated with little fishies.
Sorry to highjack this thread, it just sparked a question in me, and I wanted to see what everyone else thought.

I have so wanted to enjoy the sea veggies because it would open up my food choices - to be able to use the nori as a wrap.

However, I just can't seem to get past the taste of these - they don't taste like fish (which I used to love - even if it was "fishy") - to me they taste like the slime at the bottom of the ocean...ick!!

Maybe our tastes will change more as we go raw...sorry to offend anyone who loves it with my comment about sea weed (weed - it tastes like an ocean weed... )

Yes. Aren't earth grown veggies covered with all kinds of non-plant matter as well?

crisyn--

I have wondered about this too--obviously the seaweed itself is vegan, but more than a few times I have found snail-like shells still attached in my dulse leaves and other sea vegetables.... because I went vegan in the first instance for ethical reasons, Im not exactly happy about finding dead critters in my seaweed....only way to avoid this i guess would be to harvest it yourself and try to make sure the seaweed is critter-free before it leaves the ocean.....

I've heard this little fishies in the sea veggies thing too.

but whether it is true or not, I can' stand the taste of these sea veggies, and trust me, I've tried them, I used to take kelp capsules, and spirulina, I'm a child of the 60's and 70's so I remember when it was the big new thing to take this spirulina, blue green algae, food of the future, soylent green, OOPS, just a bit too far in the future!

anyway, I don't like the taste, Never likes sushi.

and Yes, I used to eat alot of seafood, stopped back in 1995, when I went vegetarian, haven't missed it.

but the sea veggies never tasted good to me, UGH!!!

although I know many people like them, I say "good for you"

and I'm a Pisces too, you'd think I'd love sea veggies, being a water sign, mermaid and all. LOL
