View Full Version : Fasting while breastfeeding?
Does anyone have any advice on fasting while nursing? (I mean like a very short fast, one day or MAYBE 2...?) Or, could you point me to where I could find this info.? Does a fast that short really have benefits that would make it worth it? TIA!:D

Hi there! Congrats on your new born.........
It's suggested that mother's who are breastfeeding, not to fast at all. I wouldn't even do a day of fasting. You're best bet is to eat raw, have smoothies etc. You don't want to increase the acceleration of toxins into the milk that the baby is drinking.

I personally would not fast while nursing - I would be worried that my baby would not get enough nutrients, and plenty of toxins... Maybe if you drank green juices or green smoothies you could feel the effects of a fast without the toxic release. Either that, or just wait until you've completed nursing.
But, I am by no means an expert. I've had four kids (unfortunately none while raw), and I'm all for the best for them!!:D
Thanks for the input! Yes, I hadn't even considered the toxins...this is all pretty new to me. I am only about 2 weeks into being raw. She's 11 months old so I thought it might be OK, but again, I can see that I should wait. Thanks for the advice!

B reastmilk is not a major channel for eliminating toxins, but some *may* come out. I choose to believe that nature seeks to protect the baby & gets rid of more toxins by other means as much as possible.
I fasted 3 times while breastfeeding. The first was a 3 day juice fast, the others were about 7 days, mostly water & dry fasting with a day or so of juice at first. I never had a problem with my milk supply, my body produced what my baby needed. I felt phenominal. My baby was fine.
Thanks RawVeganMom! Still thinking, lol...BTW, LOVE your sig.! :D

I noticed, while breastfeeding, that if I ate sparingly for a few days in a row my milk supply went way down. I can only imagine with fasting you wouldn't have much to offer the little one!
Congrats on being a new Mom!

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. If you want to fast, wait until your baby is weaned. Right now, what you eat directly effects her nutrition and her health, and if you're fasting, that can't be good for your baby.
