I bought some brazil nuts a couple of weeks ago. I put them in a baggie in the refrigerator. Are they bad? How will I know? I read somewhere that brazil nuts go bad fast. Help, before I eat them and get sick.

I would think that having them stored in the fridge would preserve them longer...plus it's only been a couple of weeks. I've had Brazil nuts stored out of the fridge for longer than that and they were still good.

You will know if they're rancid by the smell and the taste...I can't really describe the smell/taste, but if you've ever had rancid nuts it's pretty much the same across the board regardless of the type of nut. I'd just smell them and if you can't tell from that, take a little bite (I've never gotten sick from tasting nuts and finding that they were rancid)...but I truly think they're just fine unless they were already rancid from the beginning when first purchased - which has happened to me once. I bought some macadamia nuts from Trader Joes once a while back and they were rancid, so I took 'em back and got another bag and opened them right there in front of the clerk to make sure they were fresh and they were! :)

Thanks RK! I have already tasted them and I thought they were fine. I wanted to make some of Maraw's crispy chips, and I think they called for brazil nuts...they are fine! Thanks again.

you can tell how fresh they are by color. They should be creamy white, not yellow/creme color.

I love Brazil nuts. They are my favorite nut!

I keep mine in the fridge and they last quite a while. You can also keep them in the freezer too. I generally buy small amounts, so I just refrigerate them. It's already been mentioned, but you will definitely know if they've gone bad. They don't taste good at all!
