View Full Version : Tortilla Chips
Is there any recipe for tortilla chips that will make tortilla chips that don't suck? I have used about 5 different recipes (including alissa's) and i cannot get anything anywhere near a good crunchy tortilla chip. They all stick in my teeth and are really chewy, in spite of being dehydrated for a couple of days. Do I have to dehydrate them for a week?
I miss dipping chips into salsa and guacamole so much that it is driving me absolutely insane! Should I not be using corn? If I can't find a good raw recipe for some crunchy tortilla chips, I'm going to have to just be 99% raw instead of my current 100% raw.
If I sound desperate, you are correct! Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe you could use raw veggie chips to dip with?
Honestly, although we try, not much is going to taste exactly like SAD. You just get used to new tastes and textures on this RAW diet.
i understand that not everything is going to taste exactly like SAD, and i have embraced that. its just that my most favorite thing to eat is chips and salsa, and raw tortilla chips just arent cutting it. what veggies can i use that will get really crunchy? i need something with a crunch for my salsa, or else salsa wont be worth eating for me anymore. would eggplant work if i cut it thin enough?

Vish,
what about using crackers as a sub? The raw tortilla chips I tried were all soft, I didn't mind that. I guess a crunchy cracker recipe could help you :)
cheers,

yes, a crunchy cracker recipe would be tops! anybody wanna help me out with one of those?

i went through the same withdrawls , but i dont dehydrate .
what i ended up arriving at is just eating salasa on shredded lettuce .
and another thing that helped was quitting salt . i was craving the salt on tort chips , without salt they taste dead - like card board . when i quit salt 8 months ago i ve since lost the cravings for tortchip .
another thing may be getting dried corn and grinding it up in blender and putting salsa on that .

I made up my own recipe using ground corn that I had dehydrated, ZUCHINI, and flax seed. I thought the grinding of the corn, with the zuchini really helped the crunch factor. I also added my own spices like chili powder, cumin, salt. Oh yeah, don't forget the ground flax. I think my measurements....give or take was ABOUT:
1 cup ground corn
1 cup chopped zuchini
1/4 cup - 1/2 cup ground flax
Enough water to get it blended.(about 1/4-1/2 cup)..and then spice it the way you want it.
Good luck.

I made chips to go with our nachos last night. Really simple:
corn from 5 ears
a small amount of olive oil (didn't measure - just a quick pour)
and 2 c. onion
Dehydrated and they came out crispy and crunchy. There's a pic in the photos only thread.

Oh gosh....I forgot!!! I also used a med. sweet onion.....and about 1/4 cup olive oil
Put everything in the food processor and process away.
Smooth out with really wet hands!
Good luck, Vish. I hope I caught you in time! I'm sure even without the oil or onion it will still turn out....but it sure is better WITH!

I make variations on Alissa's flax crackers and they come out crunchy and delish. I haven't made them yet but what about sweet potato chips? They'd be good with salsa. Beckla and TVILLEMOM, those recipes sound yum. Can't wait to try em.

What temp are you dehydrating at? I have found that if I dehydrate at a low temp everything says pretty soft no matter how long I dehydrate but at a bit higher temp (105) I get great crunchy crackers, zuchinni and eggplant chips.
Just a thought....

I dehy. at about 130 for about 1 hour, and then reduce and dehy. at 115 for the rest of the time.
I had stored corn chips that I've had for AT LEAST 2 weeks in the fridge. I took them out thinking they would be soggy...they weren't!!! You gotta love it when that happens!
