It's not time just yet.. but my mind is already wandering to the summer and all the (r)awesome music camping fests I love to go to....
so I'm starting to wonder what foods I should bring with me if I were to go camping for say 3 days and how to transport it and what would be the easiest?
of course lots of fruit in their whole state: apples, bananas, oranges, etc...
but I'd like to maybe bring some recipes or something a little more complex with me if possible to share with some camping friends who don't know much about raw foods.
do you guys have any suggestions on what raw foods would be good for a three day long camping trip? thanks!

I went to two music festivals raw and didn't have a problem.
For meals I prepared guacamole, salsa, and a corn salad. I brought many veggies to make salads, and I topped them with the three things above.
Breakfast was bananas with raw almond butter or apples.
Lots of grapes, celery with raw almond butter, watermelon.
For snacks lots of nuts and trail mixes do well.
And don't forget, lots and lots of water.
Misty Mountain also goes to lots of music festivals (that's how I know her), so if she ever comes out of lurker mode, she can chime in. :D ;)

I have been to two music festivals raw and didn't have a problem. This summer I will be vending at 4 and attending several others and don't think it will be a problem either.
WHAT MUSIC FESTIVALS DO YOU ATTEND?
I attend many in the NE and also some in Austin Texas. My first one of the season will be a bluegrass festival in Austin.

I went to the bluegrass festival in austin a few years ago.. sooo much fun! if new monsoon happens to be playing.. go see them! anyway.. I've been to a lot and I used to live in austin (I miss it so!) but now I live in the north east so I'm going to ones up here.. mountain jam, maybe philly folk fest, I wish I could do old settlers near austin this year... it looks pretty great!

do you just bring them in a cooler or something? along with all the fruit? all your suggestions sounded great.. I didn't even think about trail mix. doh!
thanks!
We vend at some festivals, too... this year I think we're only vending Langerado & Bonnaroo and we go to Burning Man, too....
We're taking a generator and the Vita Mix so we can make frozen smoothies. So, so good in the heat!
We pre-freeze the stuff that can be frozen and it helps keep the ice chests cold. You can also create a deep freeze by using an extreme cooler and dry ice. We still had frozen popsicles after day 7 in the Nevada desert that way.
I plan to take cut up fresh veggies to make wraps using romaine lettuce this year.
Trail mix with raw nuts and dehydrated fruits are great as a snack, and we always take Lara bars.
Yay for festival season!!
if new monsoon happens to be playing.. go see them!
I'll second that.... love those guys. We do work for them occasionally.

ok JGex... how can I send you a private message? if you don't mind, I'd really like to talk to you about some things.. festival vending in particular.
and yes... yay for festival season! I'm soooo tired of this snow and the only thing keeping me going is the thought of dancing barefoot in the grass and hearing some great tunes outdoors in the sunshine!

Several months ago I went camping with a church group (my current avatar is a picture from there). I brought avocados, olives, and some other things. They brought large amounts of tomatoes, lettuce, and other ingredients, which I just ate raw.
Marci, you can email me... judy(at)drowningcreek.com
I thought I had that turned on in my profile, but it says I chose not to get emails? Hmmmm....
Pierre, avocados do great on the road! Especially if you like eating them right ouut of the skin!

Yeah, for music festivals!!!!!
Okay, for you Marci, and other NE folks you gotta check out Gathering of the Vibes. This year it is CT, but normally it was in upstate NY (outside Albany about 2 hours). My favorite place on the web is their forum www.gatheringofthevibes.com/bored. Check it out. A bunch of like-minded folks and craziness there. I'm moonstone on that board.
New Monsoon... yes, I've already seen them. And they are smoking. I can't wait for Old Settler's. The venue kicks ass. We score a spot right next to the creek so we can wake up and float down it to the rope swing for some early morning excitment. But my friend is already asking me if she can make the famous potato soup that we always make for it... I said NO!!! She is like what the hell will we make to eat. She hates fruit.... he he he.
This is my frist year for vending. I'm starting a fair trade biz with small artisans in thailand. check out my website. www.thailandtradingcompany.com
jgex, i've never been to bonaroo... it's too big for me i think... but i will defiantly hit up Langerado next year since I will be moving to FL... I won't be home from Thailand in time for it this year.
So what are your favorite bands and festivals????
My favorite bands are Assembly of Dust (a honky-tonk folk type jam band from VT), Yonder Mountain String Band, String Cheese. I love blue grass.....
My favorite festivals are Old Settler's in Austin and Gathering of the Vibes in the NE. However this year I will be attending some smaller festivals for the first time to vend at.
GO VISIT THE GATHERING OF THE VIBES MESSAGE BOARD (link above). WHAT A FUN CROWD!!!
Yeah for other festival goers.

Yes, everything in a cooler... And one trick I like to use is freeze smaller water bottles before I go. Then I don't fill the cooler with ice. I fill it with the bottles and it lasts for a good while. Keeps stuff cool and by the time I want to drink the water it is unfrozen.
Also, lots of gallons as well.
And I end up buying more ice from a vendor after the 2nd day or so.
Have a shady spot to store your stuff.

Hey Luna,
Came upon this site in the last few days...

There's an awesome, awesome veggie wrap recipe in there I've been looking for for months! No seed or nut and it's pliable too! Yummo!
Yeah, for music festivals!!!!!

I went to GotV in '03 or '04... whichever year the Allman Bros & Mule played. I know a bunch of the crew that works Vibes, too. We have a lot of friends in the NE.
Bonnaroo *is* too big. We go there to work.... I totally prefer smaller fests like Wakarusa, Langerado, Smile fest, Amberland. We go on Jam Cruise every January, too. We work the bigger fests, but we enjoy the smaller ones! Vending is a lot of fun if you enjoy diversity & people in general. Never a boring moment at a fest.... ;)
Among my fav festie bands.... Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Mutaytor, SCI, YMSB, Panic, PGroove, Derek Trucks Band, Les Claypool, New Monsoon, Umphrey's McGee.... I could probably compile a pretty long list, but you get the idea!

Awesome, Carmella! The recipes look very good. I've been wanting to experiment with making raw dried nori roll snacks...

JGex, what do you vend???
Band and event posters..... we design and print them here. The bands and events sell them at their merch tables at shows, but we almost always keep some so we can put them in our web store and take some out on the road to vend later. My email address up there ^ is also our web site.... ;)

Bonnaroo *is* too big.
I'll second that. I went back in 2004 and missed most of the bands cause I spent a lot of my time just recovering. haha. Ok, I guess I partook in drinking and other things a little too much and that was part of my downfall, but all in all, it's waaaay too big and I felt like a tiny little ant in this crazy big world there where I didn't know anyone! (I went alone and sorta bummed a ride with a girl I hardly knew). I don't think I'd go back again unless I was with a big group of good friends.
We go on Jam Cruise every January, too. ooh, I've wanted to do jamcruise forever but my fiance hates the idea of cruises!
Among my fav festie bands.... Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Mutaytor, SCI, YMSB, Panic, PGroove, Derek Trucks Band, Les Claypool, New Monsoon, Umphrey's McGee
my favs are spearhead and new monsoon hands down. oh, and antibalas afrobeat orchestra!
CARMELLA -- thank you so much for that link!! ::hug::
see you guys on the festie road! if anyone is going to philly folk fest or grassroots fest or mountain jam, I'll be there! :D

JGex, you mentioned dry ice....I would like to know how you do that. It seems like dry ice would be the absolute answer to keeping things frozen in the cooler. I'm not sure how safe it is to use though.???? How do you keep everything from turning to straight "ice" when it comes in contact, or maybe I don't understand what dry ice is....I would like more info.

I wanted to thank you guys for this post. Me my hubby and three youngest kids are going camping this weekend (fri to sun) with the Cub Scouts.
I was getting a bit worried about what to bring. The scouts are providing meals and I think they will have some salad and fruit but that may just be some sad wilted lettuce and a tomato. Who knows they may even throw some cheese in and leave us with nothing to eat.
Now I feel silly because it actually seems easier to camp with just raw foods no worry of mayo or cold cuts being left out and going bad.
Thanks again,
moonlit
