I keep running into information....even though I am not looking for it....on how the use of plastics is not good. Even the plastic bottles that water is in can leach out things we do not want to injest. I am wondering what u all do about the plastic shelves in dehydrators. I know u all r eating for your health and plastics would not be one of the things u would use.
I am gradually trying to eliminate any use of plastics as much as possible. Back to wax paper and glass for me.
Any ideas?

I don't use the dehydrator, save for drying excess Summer tomatoes or the occasional fruit; however, I am with you: I wrap my food in unbleached parchment, paper towels, etc. If it needs more protection, then I'll place it in a plastic bag or two (with the parchment around the food) so the food doesn't come in contact with it.
I've read both theories, and I do this as a precautionary measure; not sure if those who don't are necessarily doing major harm. Some studies suggest that the plastic leaches into the food whether or not it is exposed to heat (especially citrus); I just, personally, choose to avoid this possibility.
I did the same thing when I used to microwave. No chance of that being a problem now :)

You asked for my opinion and my opinion is that most plastics are not harmful. I have read that the water you buy in bottles comes in bottles that are not meant to be reused. Might be safe to refill them a couple of times, but after that the plastic can break down and leach into your water. So I don't reuse those. But other than that I don't avoid plastic.

you know i was wondering about this. i dont have my juicer with me right now, and ive been buying fresh-squeezed organic OJ & grapefruit juice from whole foods. it comes in plastic bottles, and i was wondering if after purchasing them transferring them to glass jars would be of any benefit? or is the damage already done?
so far as dehydrators..which type do you have? i know certain types you can purchase wire shelves for. i have a circular one (nothing like the excalibur) and my mom also has old wire shelves for it.
