In the past when I tried the rawliving foods I did not pay attention to good fats and at one time I did this 80-10-10, no more than 10% good fats and I noticed I had a lot of hair falling out. It would be all over the floor and in the shower. This last week of going raw, I have paid closer attention to the Omega 3's & 6's, making sure I consume them everyday. Mainly because I have major problems with hormone imbalances and read that the good fats will help with that. I am also taking Metformin and seeing an endocrinologist. What I have noticed is not much hair loss!? Which is a good thing. Well, my question is, I know that 10% fat is not enough, for me, but you can sure lose weight a lot faster by keeping it that low; how much should I include in the diet to give me a better weight loss and keep the hair from falling out? Or, does Omega 3's & 6's have anything to do with hair loss? I know no one can give medical advice but I was just wondering what you all consider a healthy amount of Omega 3's & 6's?

You are correct :) The omegas are very important. Your body (especially your brain) need them. I would make sure to always get the omegas every day, without fail. Then the rest is up for you to decide. One does not need a lot of omegas, anyway.

And they definitely have the hair/skin/mood connection; it's scientifically proved.

For the other fat, if you are interested in tailoring to your needs, you can make it 10-20%, if you're very active, maybe 25%. It depends on the individual. You shouldn't stress too much from day to day (fat grams counting) what matters is the overall intake. You may want more fat one day and none another. That's fine.
But you are doing the right thing by getting the Omega3's in. Exercise, of course, is always recommended for optimal health.

Sweet Pepper... Have you read Alissa's book? In it she describes how she fed people and how they've lost weight. She also has many testimonials from people with before/after pics and in one case, the whole food diary. If you've not read it, I highly suggest it.

This food program is about freedom from all those considerations. When I first started eating raw, I started at the same time as 6 others. Most of our foods were nut/seed based and we ALL eliminated excess weight without having to concern ourselves with how much or how little fat we ate.

The first thing one might want to learn on this food program, far as I'm concerned is ~ to play with one's food. :D

Amen to that Revvell!

Before I went raw, I was always worried about food. If I was dieting, I was obsessing to follow the diet. When I wasn't dieting, I would eat, and then stress about the weight I put on!

Since going raw this time around (starting Dec. 27, 2006), I haven't stressed about anything food related (except when I ran out of raw agave and had to order more :( ) You wanna know what my new criteria for food is Sweet Pepper? I actually like whatever is the messiest.

Now, before you think I'm crazy, let me explain why. The messier it is, the more sensations I experience with my food. So besides taste and texture in my mouth, I get to feel how it feels dribbling down my chin and on my fingers as I wipe it off. It's fun trying to NOT make the mess knowing full well that the mess is coming anyway. Try it, you just might like it!

And I notice that with including MUCH MORE healthy fats this time being raw, not only is my hair not falling out, but it's growing faster, so are my nails, and my attitude and outlook are much more positive and happy than last time. HTH!

Awesome! I sure did like hearing what everyone had to say about the amount of good fats! Keep em' coming! :p

jaurequi: The hair/skin/mood connection that you wrote about has to be the absolute truth!! Because like I stated, my hair isn't falling out like before and my mood is definetely better and I have these little pimpley bumbs on the back & side of my thighs that are now disappearing and my skin is much softer and smoother. When I first started putting this together, I took account of my past and realized that, yes, I consumed a huge amount of fat and always seem to crave it, but it was the wrong kinds of fats, so, of course my body had to be deprived of what it needed, thus maybe showing up in my hormonal imbalances and out-of-control appetite? Just makes sense to me. Now that I have been eating the good fats and not the bad fats, my cravings for fats have been dwindling. Again, common sense, but how many people go through life not realizing this. I say proper nutrition needs to be taught at an early age.

Revvell: Yes, I do have Alissa's book. I have read it through some time ago and lately, just thumbing through reading bits & pieces. It all seems to be coming together quite nicely. Alissa states in her book to trust your body, it will tell you what you need. I have been starting to experience this more just this last week. I have to say, I did not concern myself with the fats this week and I lost 2.5 pounds. Which is great for me. Because the scale wasn't moving doing anything else, in fact, I worried continuously about the number climbing up and that is what was happening! I am going to continue being free. It sure is a great feeling.

Sunshine: OMG! Do I know what you mean about obsessing about dieting. No more! No more do I want to drive myself crazy. I understand totally what you say. Same with me about the hair and I have this problem with my nails having these horrible ridges across them and they are thin and flimsy. I have a lot of hangnails and splitting. Can't wait for them to get better. I have noticed a very slight improvement, nothing outstanding yet. But, I know it's coming.

I feel like a burden is starting to lift off my shoulders and my spirit starting to rise.

Thank you all, God Bless

Could you give me an example of some "GOOD FATS"? Would those be things like avocados, flax oil and/or seeds, etc? Would coconut oil be considered a good fat? How about raw nuts and seeds?
