View Full Version : Newly raw-One month and my nails need help!

Hi, I have been reading just about everything I can find to learn more about the raw food diet and it all makes sense to me. I have spent the last month learning, and changing my eating habits. My concern is that my nails keep breaking and I have never had this problem. I am drinking vegetable juice each day ( usually greens, cucumber, ginger, lemon and 2 apples ) plus I have been making one green smoothie. Can anyone advise what I may need to change or add? :( :(

I've been 100% raw for about 6 weeks now, and I don't know if this is why my nails have grown so fast and healthy, but I have added more healthy fats into my diet since starting this. And they have grown SO good now. Now don't get me wrong, my nails still bread from time to time, but it's usually when I've got 'em pretty good doing something and hurting them. HTH!

A nail takes several months to grow from root to tip. My nails currently are weak and break. I think it's because when what is now the tip was at the root (called the "lunula" - I can see it in my thumbnails), I was detoxing and had more important uses for protein than making nails.
If your nails are breaking because you just changed your diet, it could only be because they aren't being kept moist, so I suggest applying some jojoba oil when they're still moist (shortly after bathing) and, as Shine said, eating some good fats.

I know a person (not raw) that had awful nails that started taking flax oil. It was amazing the difference it made. Really a huge difference. So that is what I would recommend.
