Made this last night, was worried I wouldn't like it for some reason and that I'd waste a very expensive 2 cups of macadamia nuts lol. Anyway it is pretty good, definitely not that same texture or flavor of the sour cream/onion dip I am used to but it's still good. The instructions say to use a food processor or blender to make it in, I'm wishing I had a good blender now because while it came out very smooth....unlike my alfredo attempt which looked like finely chopped nuts......there is still a slightly gritty texture to it which I assume is because the food processor just can't get it smooth enough. It is definitely unique and is almost kind of light like a whipped dip. Just thought I'd share my experience with it. I'm expecting it to actually taste really good when I get home since the onion will have had overnight and all day to soak flavor into it.

Just had to relay some more information. If anyone tries this, wait until the next day to sample it. It is REALLY good. Not the same as the "normal" sour cream with onion dip packet but I like it.......a LOT :D

so from the lack of replies can I assume nobody else has tried this recipe? lol I am curious though if anyone knows if a standard blender (meaning non vitamix) would have gotten this smoother by reducing the grittiness from how it came out in the food processor. I saw a post where rawpriestess said she uses macadamias for whipped cream and when I think whipped cream I think not gritty so I'm assuming there is some way to get this smoother, any ideas?

I've not made the onion dip yet, but I have made the whipped cream recipe in Alissa's book with cashews and OJ. It was fairly grainy when done in a food processor. However, it has the distinct aftertaste of whipped cream, oddly enough.

When you see recipes with SAD food names, they're mostly not going to look, have the texture of, or taste just like their SAD counterparts. So, what you got from the onion dip might be as smooth as it'll get, especially considering there's nuts involved.

Thanks for sharing! It's nice to know the recipe has a thumbs up :)

i tried this a few days ago with my food processor. it was still a little gritty. i also added some cayenne, diced red bell pepper, and crushed garlic. came out tasting a little like mock shrimp salad. go figure. it was good, but i was wondering the same thing about the texture. i wonder, if we had a vitamix could we get it smooth?

I made the onion dip this morning and will have it for Dinner tonight. Had to use cashews because I can't get mac. here. In Wisc I could get them all the time and they were cheap plus raw.
The dip sure does smell great. Can hardly wait to try it.

I don't have a Vitamix yet :(
hoping to get one for perhaps Mother's Day if I am good :p
But when I order food from the raw food chef in
town her whipped cream is smooth and not gritty at all.
All her desserts are smooth that have a cream filling
made from nuts. Also her cream cheese was smooth as well.
So I would think that the Vitamix or something comparable(K-Tec the other one?!?!? can't remember) would smooth out the grittiness.

Thanks everyone, I'm guessing that soaking the macadamias first might have reduced the grittiness as well, but the recipe does not state to soak them first so I didn't. I do plan on playing around with adding some fresh spices of some kind next time to see what flavors I can add but it's still very good on its own. Just remember if you're making it for the first time, let it sit in the fridge overnight for the onion flavor to combine with the dip base.

I haven't tried the onion dip yet, but I've found that blenders usually do get things smoother than a food processor when you're talking about dressings and dips...that sort of thing. Sometimes you gotta blend for a long time. I make my own dressings and the longer I blend, meaning, sometimes I have to run it for a while, stop and let it rest and then start it up and blend for a while again to get it REALLY smooth with minimal to no grittiness. I don't own a Vitamix, I have a L'equip.

have a Ktec myself, but haven't tried this recipe yet. i wonder, for those without a high-speed blender, if you could initially make it in the food processor and use an immersion (hand held) blender to get it really really smooth. Maybe i will play with that idea. I could try it in my food processor and then blend with the immersion blender (they are pretty cheap, 50 bucks or less-i got mine for 25, half off at dillards years ago). hmmm, does anyone else have an immersion blender? what do you think?

You know I got one of those for christmas and I haven't even used it yet but maybe it would work for this? I don't know.

I made the onion dip for the raw potluck we had a week or so ago. Everyone liked it a LOT. I don't have macadamia nuts either, so I used cashews -- the dip goes great with flax crackers.

I also made the Pepper dip - it was really good. I'll bet it would make great crackers too!

I made the Dill Cream Cheese dip last night in my blender (KitchenAid)
and it turned out really creamy. It's made with cashews though and not
macadamians so don't know how that would play out in the smoothness
factor. I also soaked them for several hours before hand. I enjoyed it.
Will have to try the onion dip; sounds good. Will report back on how
it does in the blender.
