Okay, here's a shout out to all of you: Find all the Farmer's Markets in your area! There are two in my neighborhood and one of them just has plain and simple crappy stuff - it all looks like it's about to wither up & die, although the prices are awesome. Too bad - I don't care HOW cheap it is, I'm not going to put that in my body.
So I got the paper the other day with a coupon for Fuji apples at 39 cents a pound at the cheap store. That is dirt cheap around here - the cheapest I've seen is 50 cents a pound, and the "norm" is about $1.79/lb. So I thought I'd stop by and if they were decent enough, I'd buy them for DH's smoothies & the kids who are not raw but like to munch on apples.
Turns out - the coupon is for a place ACROSS THE STREET from the crappy place - and OMG it is awesome! I never noticed it before because it's a meat market AND a fresh produce - so I always that it was just a meat market. Plus, why would there be two big Farmer's Markets across the street from each other?
It is overflowing with local juicy ripe veggies & fruits - with more selection than I've seen anywhere. And the prices? Wow! I can't wait to see what it looks like in the summertime; it must be absolutely crammed with all kinds of summer goodies!
The kicker is that 2 nights ago DH called on his way home from work to say he was at the store and did I need anything. I wanted to try some of the Crazy Bread crackers that have been raved about, so I asked if he'd pick up 2 red bell peppers. He called me back 5 min. later to say they were 2/$5.00 and did I still want them at that price? Um...no way!
At this Farmer's Market they are $0.79 each! The produce is all irregular looking, not like the same-size, uniformed all in a row kind of stuff you see at alot of grocery stores. Bananas were all 2lb/$1.00, mix & match potatoes $.39/lb.
I saw things like Jicama that I've never seen before. I'm also fresh-squeezing my lemons for the Master Cleanse and I've been paying $1.45 EACH at the Farmer's Market I usually go to. Here there are 2/$1.00 - yippee!
So it's just funny to me, that I'm like a kid in a candy store at the produce store. :D
