Can anyone tell me about preservastives? I wanted to know about perservatives in dried fruit, like sulphur dioxide and is it really that bad. I found a site that has dried fruit but some of them have preservatives.

I have been trying to find a trail mix for my son, and mostly everything has preservatives in them plus sugar. So I have found some fruits with out sugar. He is a teenage boy and won't take real fruit to school, because he thinks it won't look cool. He just turn 15 in 9th grade. So any suggestion what to give him for lunch would be appreciated, also he is raw but only likes fruits and nuts. I have been trying to give him greens, but he refuse them. Thanks again.

Check out SunOrganicFarm.com They have wonderful dehydrated fruits without perservatives, and their prices are good too.

IMO sulphur dioxide should not be allowed in our foods. At one point they were using it to keep veggies colorful in salad bars. People who had never had respiratory problems previously, started having them. Some people died so sulfites were banned in salad bars unless clearly stated.
I almost died twice because of sulfites ~ once from eating coleslaw I didn't know had it and another from French Fries. (this was many years ago.) It's dangerous stuff.

If I can't pronounce it, I'm surely not going to eat it!
Another thought. Why does ANYTHING have to be added to foods? If they are raw, fresh, living, NOTHING should be added.

Why not make your own? Then you KNOW it is pure...

Please consider for a moment what preservatives do. I don't think you will ever want to feed them to anyone or anything after that....
They basically invade the cells and turn all of the inside of the cell to mush. No more genetic information, no more structure... just mush.
Do you have a dehydrator? You could dehydrate it on the weekend for the week.

WOW. I also think they still use it on some salad bars. I used to get salad bars from Giant and Shoppers. From the Giant salad bar i was ok, but with EVERY Shopper's salad bar I got really swollen and irritable. Maybe it's their distributer, who knows. All I know is I don't eat there anymore lol.
