I've been printing out a ton of recipes to make when I go off the Master Cleanse, and am seeing Pine & Macadamia nuts so often! These absolutely kill my budget - how do you afford them? Especially for the cheeses and desserts. My local store has pine nuts at $18.39/lb and macadamias at $13.55/lb. How much do you pay - are they cheaper where you are, or do you get them online for a better price?
For pine nuts I pay $5.99 for a 6oz bag. My health food store doesn't sell it in bulk. I only use pine nuts for pesto so I rarely use them. As for macadamia nuts, I don't care for them, I purchased some online (my HFS doesn't carry them) for $7.99 for an 8oz bag. I always substitute cashews for macs in recipes. I much prefer the taste and they are MUCH cheaper.

I think I paid about $5 for a small bag, maybe it was 8oz.
I've never tried macs and i'm scared to because of the price, so I just stick with cashews. :)

Bulkfoods.com just had macadamia nuts on sale for about $7 a pound. Don't know if they're still available at that price, but you could check. Pine nuts are just plain expensive everywhere but the best price I've seen on them is at Costco.

So for those of you who only use cashews, you just always sub that instead of macadamias? And the recipes always come out okay?

I've not seen any pine nuts here that say they are raw. Macs are about $11 a pound. That's bulk.

I have a friend who really spoke highly of http://tierrafarm.com/ . Yes, my friend is a raw foodist. She says she even sent them thank you notes. I've never ordered food online though, so I don't have any first-hand experience with them.
I hope this helps

Lucky you guys! Here in New Zealand we seem to pay a TON of money for everything :(
Pine nuts are like $22 a KILO! and Macadamia nuts are like $28!.(and that's a good deal!) BTW that's New Zealand dollars.. suuucks!
I've been to the States 6 times for vacations with my family and you're all so spoilt for choice when it comes to products! We don't have much variety here in NZ, so don't take for granted what you've got on offer over there!!

I buy pinenuts at Costco for 2 pound for $10.00, I buy macs at my health food store for $13 per pound,
you can substitute pretty much any nut or seed for any nut or seed, depending on the recipe
cashews are a good sub for macs or pinenuts, because the REASON you use macs or pine nuts is usually for the smooth texture and the oils, cashews have less oils but are as smooth, so I'd use those, with a bit of coconut oil or cacao butter, depending on the recipe.
I often interchange things, depending on the recipe, I find that as a rule of thumb
almonds make the best milk
cashews make the best cheeses, sour cream and frosting
macs make the best whipped cream
pinenuts can be a sub for macs
cashews can sub for macs or pinenuts
almonds have pulp so don't make as good cheese, but the pulp makes excellent flour
and walnuts and pecans can sub each other and are the best for pie crusts and cakes and meat type pate's
just my observation or opinion,
yes, I do use hazelnuts and brazil nuts and sunflower seeds and pepitos and all that too, but this is my basic observation so far on my raw recipe journey.
good luck on yours

Got a reply from NutsOnline about their cashews & they said they're heat-shelled. In case anyone wanted to know.

I just purchased 8 0z. of Macadamias for $7.65 in Palm Springs over the week-end. Pine nuts are $14.95 lb. Both of those prices are cheaper than I can find anywhere in Los Angeles.

Houston, Texas (45-60 minutes from me)
$11.99 lb at Whole Foods
Spring, Texas (5-10 Minutes)
$13.99 a lb at HEB
Not worth the extra gas to save $2 heehee!
