Right now I have two huge boxes of fresh picked plums in my kitchen. The reason being that I joined a fruit and veg swap network in my area called Urban Orchard.
They sometimes get people contacting them saying they have trees loaded with fruit and if anyone can come pick them it's theirs.
So I volunteered to harvest the plums and we'll take the excess to the fruit swap network this Saturday.
I'm so in love with the idea of a swap network, where people give their excess fruit/veg to the network in exchange for other fruit/veg. It gives me a chance to get rid of all the extra figs, persimmons, and oranges we have (you can only eat so many from superproducing trees!)
I see so many yards with trees overburdened with fruit that is dropping and rotting on the ground. It's so sad!
Sometimes we pay through the nose for fruit and veg, and to see the wastage is just heartbreaking.
So is anyone a member of a fruit/veg swap network in their area, or interested in starting one up? I'm sure that there would be others on this site that would be interested!
And if anyone is in Melbourne Australia, get down to Ceres market in Brunswick on Saturdays and take advantage of Urban Orchard. This weekend there will be oodles of plums!
