Hi everyone! I have been desparately been trying to locate a source for young coconuts with no luck. My husband said that he heard they may be illegal in some states (we live in Pennsylvania).
Can anyone let me know how they were able to track down a source? We live in the southeastern tip of PA, so we also have ready access to Delaware and Maryland.
Thanks so much for any help!

Jeniferd,
I live in MD. I don't think the coconuts are illegal, but it's definitely not something you'll find at a WaWa. :) Are there any Asian markets in your area? Try looking online. Asian and Latine markets are both good places to look. If you're willing to make a trek to MD, there's a fantastic Asian market in Ellicott City (outside of Baltimore). You can buy young coconuts by the case there, which would save you money. There are online sources but they can be expensive. And I've noticed that places like Whole Foods and other organic/HFS charge a LOT for them. My organic grocer charges $2.50 and up per nut, while the Asian market (and they're the exact same importer, down to the seal on the plastic) charges between 79 and 99 cents each.
Once you find them, look for the smaller ones. Inspect them for mold; you don't want any green or purple mold on the outside. Make sure they're dry, too, and not soggy in places. And on the bottom, check to see that it's firm, maybe a tiny spongy, but mostly firm. You don't want a soft coconut bottom, because it's most likely older and has been sitting around. Good luck!!

I live in Philly and get mine from either the whole foods or asian market. They are really cheap at the 1st Orential Super Market on 6th st. and Washington Ave. I buy them by the case from there.
Scroll down, there is another thread going about young coconuts. I just listed a supplier in California, you may be able to order directly.

The Asian Market that I go to has few if any barcodes on products and has no on-line presence. It is filthy, and I have seen people there from all over the world. They have young coconuts.
